Hey Ooze or Oz or whut-iver it is,

Lets talk about growing up in a traumatic time like you say the pitiful baby boomers did. The tears come to my eyes thinking of your pitiful story.

If you happened to be born in the late 1920's or early 30's you are lucky to have made it through to the age of going to school let alone a bloody baby boomer age. If you got to go to school mom & dad didn't have enough money to buy you clothes to wear so you used whatever had been handed down, pitched out or patched up. A time when you always went to Church on Sunday no matter what you had to wear, cause the fear of God was instilled in you by mom & pop at an early age.

A time when daddys went out hoboing because they couldn't find a job to support their wife and kids no matter how good they were or what all they were good at. The mommas stayed home and watched the kids go hungry or gradually starve and many daddies never got to come back. If you wanted something to eat you dropped a nail in a pan of water with a little four and heat then called it soup usually with no crackers. I watched many a hobo walking the roads (few cars, no highways or interstates back then) and some of them would come to the back door to try to work or do ANYTHING to get a little chow to just keep looking and going further on. If my dad was lucky working at the time, mom would always give them something even when we didn't have much of anything. There was always wood to chop or water to carry, even if you lived in town, and all those poor guys would insist on doing something for what they got.

Most baby boomers seem to leave the impression that the world owes them a top dollar living no matter how they behaved at home or school growing up. Admittedly, partly the parents fault because they didn't want to see their kids having to do without like what they did when young. In turn these 'poor boomers' have impressed their kids with the attitudes that now create disrespect for everything that used to be honorable and good about our lives and country. They feel free to ruin themselves as drugies, to threaten, coerce, lie, rob, rape, steal, kill, you name it. Their kids, by and large, have learned to do the same and use the same tired old excuses for their actions, often their sad 'traumatic' years.

Thanks to the boomers and their offspring, and on down the line, you now lock the doors, put bars on the windows and can't offer a stranger a ride for fear of mayhem, even though you would often like to help those you could.

Yeah, I'm an old timer from the 20's and my time is short. I'm one of those that grew up in the thirties, and was one of the lucky ones to make it through the depression years and survived WWII. I feel I've been lucky all my life and indeed I have.

Baby boomers driving gas guzzlers with a full belly were traumatized and had it tough ?? Give me a break!!

My $10 worth for today and it didn't cost you a cent. You don't even have to read it

They always told you would go blind doing that now you really will!!!

Actually the first of the Baby Boomers are the ones who died in Nam-I sit in the middle-I remember Vietnam coming on TV every night-the reporters saying how many were killed-I remember seeing all the riots and the police killing those students at Kent State. I also had a best friend and neighbor whose brother went to Vietnam-he suffered a very typical fate-He wasnt killed, it was worse than that-he got married before he went-his family watched his wife then supposedly run around on him-upon hearing this he re-uped, got hooked on dope, went AWOL finally got out with a monkey on his back only to torment his parents and family nearly to death. I saw him duke it out with his dad who was in bad health-I saw him be awfully mean to his mother and his sisters and brother, he really scared me and I was used to drunks. Bush should have served over there then either he would be a babbling idiot more than what he is now or a much wiser person about war. He is bar none the biggest most made fun of dumbass of a president this country has every had.

On the subject of sex in young folks-yeah that girl knew what she was doing on that tape and yeah they should let the boy go now. I bet you one thing he thinks before he gets another blowjob. Men have for too long used their middle appendage as an excuse for anything-BULLSHIT-Y'ALL HAVE CONTROL IF YOU WANT IT!

Society has always made excuses for men but Aids doesnt, Herpes doesnt, VD never has so maybe there not an excuse just for men. Keep it in your britches boyz or yall can suffer with us.

The man can walk away from that window and you never said if she was something you would want to stand and watch or the man was just DUH, look a woman without clothes-I have to stand here and stare.

I AM UNDER MIND CONTROL CALLED A PENIS!!

I guess I overlooked that one...they're justifying a dress code by citing a fear of a school shooting? Since when did a T-shirt with a catchy saying cause a school shooting?

My favorite quote on that subject came from no stranger a source than Marilyn Manson. When asked what he would have said to the shooters at Columbine, he said something to the effect that he wouldn't have said a damn thing, he would have tried to listen to what they had to say, because nobody did and maybe if someone had, all those kids wouldn't have gotten shot.

The folks who tend to work at the Government Schools aren't going to be the sort to listen to what a kid has to say, unfortunately. Yes, there are exceptions, but if you went to Government School as a kid, how much listening did you encounter as opposed to threatening or outright verbal abuse?

It's long been a joke on college campuses all over this country that if a given graduate can't make it in the real world, there's always teaching to fall back on. Hearing that for years has left me with the impression that most folks who are teaching in the Government Schools would rather have been somewhere else. My own experience going through Government School didn't bring me in contact with too many folks who seemed to want to be there, and as time went on I saw lots of teachers that I considered competent people leave their Government School positions and move on to other things, but folks I considered less competent (or less than competent) seemed to stay on, like dregs. There'll be the usual screaming because I've said this, but what other conclusion could I draw?

I had a teacher come on JS one time and say, with a straight face, that she "deserved" $40K plus a year because -get this- she went to college.

To use an old country colloquialism, I just about shit.

How in the world can anybody say with a straight face that they deserve a given segment of money taken from the general public at the point of a gun? That's how taxes are collected, and it's how the Government Schools are funded. When I do consulting, I "deserve" whatever I can get a client to pay, not because of my training or how nice a guy I am, but on the basis of what the client thinks I'm worth as evidenced by the willingness of a client to contract my services and write me a check afterwards.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there's a whole lot of reality-based thinking going on over at the Government Schools. This bullshit about a dress code seems like a symptom of a broader disease.

I read the Pickens Progress this week and saw here parents are against the dress code and to some extent, I am inclined to agree. This was sprung on the parents too quickly and it is over the top like anything Jasper and Pickens people do,OVER THE TOP! However, parents you did this to your kids and they did it to themselves, especially at the higher middle school and high school levels. Pickens and Jasper is so full keep up with the Jones people, most here just look to exclude due to money, social standing and in most cases dress. These children learned this at the foot of the masters. If you who claim to be christians and thats most of you, even tough its hard to believe you are most the time, had taught your kids what mattered in life, then they might know. I imagine then there wouldnt be need of a dress code and if the parents here strung out on ice would put up some of the guns lying around your home, then they cant get them to take to school. I know dope causes paranoia but you mainly have to fear your fellow icedheads.

The rest of you who dont fit in either of these catagories, the thing for you to do is acknowledge these problems and attempt to help solve them instead of sticking your head in the sand and saying there wont be a school shooting here. All the shootings happened in small towns much like Jasper. In bigger places people have less familiarity with each other, so the reason for the shootings were not there. Something is very wrong in this country now, we knew better than to even think of such a thing as bringing a gun to school. Best thing I can say to all of you, WAKE UP!

Jasper is prime for a shooting spree and I have thought this for quiet some time now, of course then denial makes the world go round.

And I could tell you, but you wouldn't believe me.

The death of Kurt Kaboom wasn't traumatic for most of us. Sad, maybe. The most traumatic thing we had to endure was being at the mercy of the Boomers, since you ask.

Speaking of leadership, we've had exactly two Presidential administrations with Boomers at the helm, and they've both been total clusterfucks by all accounts. I voted for Bush. The first time, not the second. By the second time, I knew better. I never voted for Clinton, although this current guy makes me nostalgic for a time when all we had to worry about were inappropriately timed blowjobs. This current guy is killing American soldiers at a Vietnam pace, and for just as little or less a reason. Since it doesn't really impact the Boomers in the way Vietnam did, they don't care.

Neither Kennedy nor MLK were Boomers, by the way.

Is there a GenX person on the School Board? Last time I looked, it was all Boomers, but perhaps it's changed. While it's true that most of the children of the Boomers are through Government School, the Boomers are not the sort to relinquish control of anything, even a pissant local school board, and with their numbers, they won't have to do so.

For the record, not everybody from that awful generation is an awful person. I've got friends who were unfortunate enough to be born in that time frame, but they're decent enough people. The character of the generation as a whole, though, is far from stellar.

Viagra and the other ED drugs have demonstrably killed dozens of folks, but the FDA didn't dare pull ED drugs because of the fear of a Boomer outcry. At the same time, they forced the COX2 anti-inflammatory drugs like Bextra off the shelves because they "might" cause problems, not because they ever did. As a result, many millions of people with arthritis are forced to take medications that aren't as effective and sometimes have side effects that the COX2 medications didn't have.

Paul Begala wrote a piece where he talked about the Boomers and the way they as a generation have blighted everything they've touched, largely through their refusal to grow the fuck up but also through their absolute conviction that the world is theirs to rip apart and wipe their asses with, regardless of who else will have to live in it once they are finally dead and buried. It's a fascinating read, and he's more eloquent than I on the subject. Probably my favorite quote from that article, "The Boomers didn't invent sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but they damned near ruined them all".

To answer your final question, my own parents were perfect models of the sort of Boomer behavior that Begala talks about and that I have come to associate with the entire bunch. They remain, both of them, 60 year old adolescents who will never, ever grow up. Dealing with that for your entire life will cause you to see patterns and strain *not* to hate a generation of your fellow Americans.

But you *will* end up with very strong opinions on the matter, trust me.

Now hold on there Jeff with your Baby Boomer Bashing. There is something wrong with your basic premise the kids being impacted by the dress codes are likely the off spring of Gen Xrs not Baby Boomers. If you figure the last of the Boomers was born in 1961, then most of them already had their kids a long time ago and they are mostly through the public school system already.

I have noticed you seem to have it in for the Boomer generation. Don't you think you are being a little bit hard on these folks? They grew up through some of the most traumatic times our country has seen. They watched as the greatest leaders of their generation were executed (the Kennedys and MLK), and then saw the country tear itself apart in what was damn near another civil war over Vietnam where almost 60,000 members of that generation were lost. College kids from that generation were getting gunned down in cold blood by the National Guard on our campuses. They endured forced school busing and possibly the most corrupt presidency in American history. What was the most traumatic thing in comparison that the Gen Xrs had to face as they were coming up? The death of Kurt Cobain?

I'd be curious to know just what has happened to you Jeff, to make you apparently hate a generation of your fellow Americans so much.

There's an old joke about that, actually, and it goes like this:

Person A and Person B are standing an equal distance from an average-size window on an average wall on an average home. Person A is on the inside, Person B is on the outside. The blinds/shades are open.

Person A happens to be changing clothes. At the point Officer Friendly happens by, Person A is completely naked, inside the home.

Who does Officer Friendly arrest and take to jail?

Answer: The man.

If Person A was a man, he's behaving in a lewd and lascivious manner under Georgia Law. If Person B is a man, he's a Peeping Tom. If Person A and Person B are both women, Officer Friendly scurries on and pretends he's seen nothing at all.

Don't believe me? Look at the case law. If you're a man in this culture, the joke is on you, because any presumption of innocence is gone.

I once defended a suit against me brought by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, an action that was brought because the State of California paid my ex-wife almost three thousand dollars on the basis of her having sworn that she received no assistance or child support. The State of California wrote a letter to the GA DHR, and without checking the record (the Clerk of Court in this particular county keeps CS payment records) or contacting me at all, they filed suit against me in Superior Court to recover the three thousand dollars.

Of course, I'd already paid the Child Support and long story short, I still have the letter of apology from DHR for their foolishness, but it was only because I knew how to go to Atlanta and stir up a bunch of shit. I was working for GA Public Television at the time and could go anywhere I wanted. I often wonder how folks with no money or connections fare in these circumstances, and I imagine the answer to that question is that they fare pretty poorly. In fact, I bet after having been made to apologize to me they stuck it to ten or fifteen poor guys just to make themselves feel better.

On sexual discrimination and the subject of 17 year olds getting blow jobs from willing consensual 15 year old girls:

Why is it the male of the species gets the punishment and the girl involved gets nothing even if she is underage. This often happens even after both are of age. In this one I think they both deserve the same end results.

How about a program that supports the other side of the fence for a change, going for the men who get abused and shafted by the females. Lets get a march of both black & white, going on this one.

Y'all are finally figuring out our schools are run by the wrong folks-I knew it way back of now.

I taught my child to read because of phonics she couldnt in public school-did they fail her-not even once-all children homeschooled are not a crowd of Jesus freaks!!

This is not about religion in my case but about my children not being taught the things they are supposed to go to school to learn-to show you how stupid this system can get- heres an example of one of things that caused me to take my kids out of public school. I went to pick my son up at the Pickens Middle School something like five years ago or more-I told them he had a doctors appointment which he did that I made over the phone-like alot of appointments you make on the phone, you wont have a little card-they were not going to release my child for this doctors appointment without the little card. What dumbass thought up this rule?? Is that the person you want teaching your child how to make it in the real world?? I contend the Pickens Middle School sits on tainted ground or something-that place gives off strange energy. The minute you walk throught that door its like INSTANT STUPIDITY HAS TAKEN CONTROL OF THE WORLD. Why is it that jobs like that seem to be taken by those who are hungry for a drop of authority. I hate to be in charge of others simply because I have enough trouble being in charge of me and so do most folks.

The problem, as you've described it, has less to do with the kids and more to do with a culture that has sexualized them both too much and too little in all the wrong places.

A kid is a kid, and an adult is an adult. Unfortunately, we've taken the tack that this miraculously happens at a given age for everybody, and that's stupid. It's the height of stupidity to assume that someone goes to bed one night a kid and wakes up the next morning a full-fledged adult, and all on the basis of a chronological age that was picked out of the air. It's not the same age for every state, and it's not even the same age in *this* state, depending on circumstances.

Because we like to punish kids for everything in this culture (they're convenient targets, most of the time, they don't vote and 99% don't have the resources to hire a lawyer) we're going to try to make ourselves feel better about them by forcing them all to dress exactly alike. No, not today, this is merely a first step.

It's just as stupid to think that taking away their choice in dress is going to make them any more childlike as it is to keep a 17 year old in jail for receiving a willing, enthusiastic blow job from a 15 year old. Neither serves any legitimate purpose to the State or to the culture, in both cases we're stepping outside common sense just to make ourselves feel better about what we can't and never could control.

Every member of this culture who was sexually active before 18 is complicit in a miscarriage of justice in the case of the boy I'm talking about. If it was good enough for you, why should he go to jail for it? Some of the people who want to keep him in jail are descended from a long line of 14 year old mothers, especially if they're from here. Does this mean we're all the product of child rape? Shit.

If, when this current generation of kids takes power, they'd be well within their rights to demand immediate euthanasia for every Baby Boomer remaining alive. If you're a member of that generation and sat silent while all these atrocities were committed against your own blood, then you deserve it, frankly. You needn't look for a call for mercy on your behalf from JS. The Baby Boom Generation has revealed itself as rotten and evil to its very self-interested-to-the-exclusion-of-all-else core, so on their own heads be it.

From: A Guy

I'm so sorry that is your logic on the school dress code, Jeff. This strict dress code is really a result of the school administration being fed up with ongoing problems with student dress. Because of a percentage of students and parents, all students and parents now have to suffer.

The bottom line is that the way a student dresses really has nothing to do with his or her education, but a lot of students (and their parents) are way out of order as far as what is acceptable public dress.

Students show up at school with gaping holes in seats and crotches (on purpose), pants' waists at rear level, boxers showing, shorts and skirts that leave nothing to the imagination, and clothing with vulgar or suggestive sayings across chest, breast, and rear.

Likewise, many adults perpetuate these fashions. It's a sad day when grown-ups appear at school functions, including high school graduation ceremonies in cut-offs, tees, and flip-flops.

So, what's wrong with teaching young people to dress with a little dignity?

Parents, do you want to pull your kids out of government school? Go ahead. Go to private schools if you can afford them. I'm sure most private schools have even stricter dress codes or uniforms.

Better yet, home school if you've got the knowledge and skill to prepare your child for the SAT, college, etc.

Email addresses? Please. Nobody takes email seriously.

The School Board can only hurt you if you give them the power to do so.

Pull your kids out of the Government School and that'll be the end of that.

See, too many of your peers have decided to turn total responsibility for their crotchfruit over to the Government Schools. After all, it beats having to raise them yourself. This, in turn, has led to the general feeling over at the Government School that the kids now in fact belong to the Government School and that since they're having to take more and more responsibility for the kids, they're going to feel that they should have more and more say in how the kids are raised and what they wear and eat, etc.

The game is now way, way past anything you can do to correct it, and realizing that, most folks I talk to aren't complaining. They're just quietly de-enrolling their kids. Soon, the only kids that remain in the Government Schools will be the throwaways, and we're almost to that point now if they feel brave enough to begin to dictate your child's mode of dress.

In short, the assumption now seems to be that if your child is still there after everything that's been done and said, then it is only because you don't care about your child, and it's perfectly safe for them to do whatever they wish to do with and to your child. If you love your child, take him/her out. Now.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Jeff, concerning the Tate House, I have talked to several people who had contracts on it and backed out at the last minute because of the deteriation and distance from Atlanta. One contract was about $60,000.00 It kinda looks like a butler bldg. I guess they were trying to out-do the "Great Wall", erected in front of the Tate Elementary School. A beautiful, 100 year old marble wall; 4' tall, 2' thick, and 100' long was demolished to allow for the erection of the new "build a block wall". Where are the Historians when you need them?

By the was I have the lathe used to make the columns for the Tate House, it still works.

The reason they are not mining the pink; Etowah marble,is that the vein is running towards Long Swamp and if it is mined any further, it will flood out the quarry. It's becoming scarce.

From: Jeff
Email: jeff@jaspersucks.com

Ouch.

That was Jessica's reaction, as well. She was scandalized. They had to do something, though. The problem with the Tate House is that it was never really designed to be used for what they're using it for, and it shows. I've spent a night or two there over the years, and although it's about 17,000 square feet or so of house, that space isn't usable for gatherings. I haven't gone down to look at the add-on but my perception is that they were trying to create a space that you could actually hold a large wedding in, something that doesn't exist inside the old house.

I've got a certain amount of affection for the old place, as most locals do, and I actually looked at buying it at one point. The problem for me was that it is worth more as pieces than it is as a unit. There was an offer, for example, of almost a million dollars for the columns alone. If I'd bought it, I'd have had to dismantle it for the money, and I knew I couldn't stand to do so. At the point I looked at it, I could have bought the whole goddamn thing, lock, stock, and barrel along with the 27 acres it sits on and all its contents for two million dollars, and I'd have made money on it if only I could stand to see it ripped apart.

I've never really cared what the community thought of me, but it wouldn't be a lot of fun to be forever remembered as the Son of a Bitch That Tore The Tate House Apart. When it lay in ruins prior to the Lairds' acquisition and rebuilding of it in the 80's, nobody in the community cared enough to mow the lawn, but they'd have forever branded me some kind of traitor if I'd tried to turn a buck on it.

Anyway, it's unique for a lot of reasons, but my favorite reason is that it's the original McMansion. It is the primeval structure in the minds of anybody building a grandiose house for no other reason than to elevate themselves either in their own estimation or that of others. The Harnage Tavern structure that it replaced was no slouch, by all accounts, but this structure raised the bar for all future generations in term of general ostentation and pretentiousness. This was the case in 1926, and it remains so today. The only thing that has really changed is the ability of the middle class to buy about ten times as much house as they could ever possibly need with no thought as to sustainability or impact on the environment.

In order to get enough of the marble needed to do that house, they actually re-routed Long Swamp Creek according to Wolfscratch Wilderness, a book that deals with the history of East Pickens county, which is largely a history of the doings of a handful of families, chief among which was the Tates. Now there's some environmental impact for your ass: Can you imagine who you'd have to be in order to re-route Long Swamp Creek? You can't build next to a creek anywhere in Georgia now, I understand, no questions asked.

After that house was built and Col. Sam was successful in changing the names of everything in the county (he reportedly hated the Indians and everything they named had to be changed to something else), a visitor to the area got on a train and rode into the Tate Depot in the town of Tate, got in a buggy to ride up the old Federal Road to see Col Sam Tate at the Tate House or the Tate Marble Works. Tate, Tate, Tate. Was any one man ever more in love with the sound of his own fucking name?

What I've never been able to figure out is how there's any satisfaction in being a big fish in such a small pond. If I wanted to be a Big Wheel, I'd have gone to Atlanta where being a big wheel might have meant something. What could it possibly mean to be the richest man in a community that had nothing? The only thing I can think of is that it was sort of like being a rock star, you could do (and more importantly, get away with) anything you wanted, but for me that would get old very quickly. Then, you'd still be the biggest fish in what would seem like an even smaller pond. Who would your friends be? Who would you talk to? Moreover, what comfort would all your influence be to you when you lay dying?

Consider, also, that while the Tates controlled a large amount of real estate, it was essentially worthless. There was no four lane highway to allow folks to work 100 hours a week in Atlanta so they could make exorbitant payments on a house they rarely got to enjoy, so there was no demand for the land. The marble works never made much money, it just seemed like a lot because nobody else had any money at all. I was skeptical of Col. Sam Tate when I was a kid at Tate Elementary and originally heard some of the stories, but as I get older I become less and less impressed. He's got a tombstone over at Tate Cemetery, but his actual monument in the minds of most is that house. It certainly feels like a mausoleum on the inside, and I've never been able to fathom why anybody wanted to get married in a mausoleum, but tastes vary, of course.

The main male teacher I am speaking of was given the option to leave as I hear it he was moved from a higher grade to a lower one in which he was said to have done better but not good enough-anyway hes gone now. He was a short person and a hateful one too because I know him and I know of him. Dont sugar coat a school system which in the past needed a real good look and does seem at least where teachers are concerned to have slightly improved-one reason for this is when the middle schools were seperated the old I got tenure teachers stayed at the Pickens Middle and have finally, finally retired. I for one hope it continues to improve and it will as the Good old boy system continues to slowly lose its grip on Pickens County, but dont tell me what I know because I have been through this myself and one teacher here would have lost her job and tenure had the real truth been brought out.

This dovetails neatly with what I was just talking about, that being we've gotten real big on symbolism and style over substance in this country. Like the Dozen Idiot March Against Drugs, when we have some sort of social problem, somehow we've gotten convinced that the thing to do is either put on a play where we act like we solved the problem, or start bitching about the problem as if bitching will make it go away.

It's made me wildly unpopular in certain circles, largely because the truth hurts, but if there is a God, He only put Meth here because He loves us. That's right. Who are we to question God?

Meth is idiot poison, plain and simple. If you had rats, you'd put out rat poison. If you didn't, the little bastards would take over and make you and your children sick and God knows what else, so you'd put out rat poison. We lack the strength in this country to deal with our idiots, so God in His Infinite Mercy and Wisdom put out some idiot poison called Meth.

If the Federal government was interested in what happened to the citizenry, they'd put a 55 gallon drum of meth on every street corner in this country, and keep them full until the idiots were all gone. God wants meth out there because yes, He could kill all the idiots, but it's the nature of God to give everybody a choice- and a chance. This is because God is love. I know this, because they told me so in Vacation Bible School.

Anyway, there's not a one of you who wouldn't agree that the country and Pickens County for that matter could do with a few less idiots, so why complain about meth? For that matter, why would church people get out and march against the Divine Plan of a God they say they love? Could it be that deep down inside, they're rooting for the other side? Could they be, in fact, idiots, if not idiot-sympathizers?

It's funny, some of them don't even look like they can and have never read a book past "see spot run" yet they read here while others look like they don't have time to log on because they might be late to the dinner table, and "hell shaw befall those who have never missed a meal". Was there a fatality in front of Ingals? I heared a motorcycle was involved?

Now on a darker note, I notice the NAACP had a memeorial cervice finally putting to rest the "N" word. Honestly I wonder if thats just for white people or do they still plan on using it on each other when they want to describe a bad mother that is a close homey of theirs. I no more of a racist than the next guy but if your going to use it freely whenever you chose in the same negative manner then don't go pulling out the race card when another race uses it. I work with a few and to be honest they a some of my closest friends and I throw it at them all the time. They even use it on me, Im glad they finally burried it though it was beginnig to hurt my feelings and make me feel a little uncomfortable.

I'm not the little short guy to which you refer, Hairy, because I've never been in that type of trouble. Likewise, no other "little short guy" has been fired from the system. As a matter of fact, I can count on one hand the number of teachers who have been fired or forced to resign in the last fifteen years.

You're simply repeating some I-walked-into-the-school-and-let-that-teacher-have-it redneck stories that you have heard or perhaps created to lend drama to your otherwise humdrum life. In short, you're a shit stirrer, one of those people who isn't happy unless she is being militant about something and causing as much discord as possible.

Furthermore, you seem to hate everyone and everything. Don't you think your life would be a little more pleasant if you tried to focus on something positive for a change?

Now I have noticed that on this BB it seems to be more of a bitching session by many ( justifiable in most cases ) and when it comes to real problems, it seems the problems are blown off, and some seem to be totally complacent in continuing the bitch sessions.

What would you prefer? In most cases, there's nothing to be done. Folks bitch about public servants but then they vote them right back in, or worse, they stay at home on Election Day and never even bother to register their dissatisfaction anywhere but here!

I think people just mainly want to bitch, when it comes right down to it. It's easier than anything else you could do, it costs no money, and it's turned into the Great American Pasttime because in the main we're too weak as individuals to step up and do anything else. In other cases, the complexity of whatever irks us exceeds our intellectual grasp, so there's nothing to do but bitch. There's a handful of things that people might attempt to change, but they don't even know where to begin.

I've always said I'd rather somebody come on here and bitch as opposed to going downtown and opening fire, so I let 'em bitch. What else is left to them, really?

Mr. Jeff, again thanks for the response. You had asked a question and my intention here is to answer it to a degree. Keep in mind I am not one of these local "SLICKS" that has an office on nearly every street corner that subverts the Laws, Statutes, Ordinances and Constitutions both Federal and State, every opportunity they get for the wonderful instrument we call "Money"

"How has 44-5-60 made them obsolete?"

http://www.lawskills.com/code/ga/44/5/60/

Not that this is the defining section but it states what it states.
(b) Notwithstanding subsection (a) of this Code section, covenants restricting lands to certain uses shall not run for more than 20 years in municipalities which have adopted zoning laws nor in those areas in counties for which zoning laws have been adopted.

There exists a particular HOA that has it's covenants written for 30 years in 1986, It would appear that the above mentioned section (b) might change this 30 years to 20 years as per the O.C.G.A.

If this is in fact correct and there have been various "Slicks" that have said this is the case,There is reason to sue and disolve the Association, of course a suit must be filed to let the court decide.

In the mean time the governing body of this HOA has denied knowledge of this O.C.G.A. and has instituted a building fee that is not provided for in the governing documents, and in fact raised the annual dues, by the governing body ( meaning board not members or owners )The building fee deal is deemed as extortion when considering the B.O.D won't issue a letter to build a house until the fee that is not provided for is paid. We live in interesting times, this is for sure.

Now, Your statement is interesting and in fact true when mentioning the 51% of the population that is needed to get anything done, The american population for the most part is disgusting cowards. This Org's membership like so many others have thier collective heads up thier asses so far that they don't know what to do. Therefore they are getting screwed by the governing body ( not the membership) This is for the most part interesting, and very insulting to many, because no one has the spine to stand up to the crooks who are elected supposedly to run the org.

The lake deal? You again are correct, there will be a situation and most likely someone will lose property or life, Ivan played havoc on this particular lake, and nearly compormised the dam. This was of course hidden from the membership, but there are documents that address this situation from a dam builder ( who designed and built this dam )Statiing that the dam is "UNSAFE"

Now I have noticed that on this BB it seems to be more of a bitching session by many ( justifiable in most cases ) and when it comes to real problems, it seems the problems are blown off, and some seem to be totally complacent in continuing the bitch sessions.

Good to live in Amerika eh? I wish you well. Thanks again for the response. I know things like this doesn't interest many however some might be living in the HOA mentioned and might not know these things, sometimes being able to be informed is a good thing. Take care!

I avoided this by avoiding neighbors. I think that's the proper answer. Locate your house in such a fashion that no one can build next to you, and you find you have no need of a homeowners' or property owners' association at all. You'll be an association of one, free to do as you please with almost nobody to answer to at all.

Who ever said that people were meant to live in tract houses? What's the appeal? I'd rather live in a cardboard box on acreage than a million dollar house on a quarter acre.

From: Oz

Well, HOA's do have their good side also. If you've ever plunked down your life's savings on a house, and then seen your neighborhood get trashed by neighbors who just don't give a hoot you'd know what I mean.

For an example, just come visit Crystal Creek at the end of Frontier Rd. These houses are all in the $180K range, but you would think a number of the residents think it's just one big trailor park. Just take a look at the beautiful cinder block and plastic mail box the first house in the subdivision has put out and you get the picture.

HOA's can help protect the value of your home by keeping people from doing stuff like this, or proudly displaying their last several generations of old cars up on blocks in their front yards. I'm no yuppie snob or anything like that, but IMO certain minimum covenants that keep people from trashing their neighborhoods while still protecting peoples individual rights make sense.

Oh, God...I said something about that a couple of years ago and got verbally smacked down for it. Somebody who was working at Home Depot or some of the new businesses was bitching about having open positions that they couldn't fill because none of the applicants could pass the mandatory drug tests, and I said well, duh...did anybody bother to check that *beforehand*?

All I really said was something along the lines of once a year, on the 4th, most of Pickens County's highly educated and motivated workforce is on display if any particular corporation wanted to see who'd be applying for work. You'd think I'd said something negative about the Virgin Mary.

Look, folks, I'm no prize, either, and I know it. I also happen to be reality-based enough to think that a corporation that is planning on coming here and sinking half a million into a property and moving in maybe another million or two in inventory should take the time to see what the local workforce is like, if for no other reason than fixing their price points to cover the costs of bringing people in from other areas to work. It's irresponsible to your shareholders not to cover all your bases, and doubly so when they're so simple to cover.

There's something about being here in Pickens that makes folks *want* to be here. Case in point, with gas $3 or so a gallon, it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to drive back and forth every day in my F-150 to Marietta, but I do it, and I do it because I want to lie down every night where I always have. During the worst of the Katrina gas crisis, the savings in gas would almost have paid for a simple apartment, but that isn't how I want to live. I don't enjoy Marietta that much, it's a place to work where there happens to be a *real* accredited college to employ me. KSU is a smidge closer, but they aren't an engineering school. I like AppTech well enough (I graduated from there, feels like 100 years ago) but their credits don't transfer.

Anyway, a lot of people have apparently faced this choice and decided to stay here althought it meant minimum wage jobs or just going on Welfare. After a few generations, everybody ends up being related to everybody else, and a few generations after that science progresses to the point that we can make shoes to hide webbed feet and other "inconveniences". No harm, no foul.

I do not own stock in Home Depot because Home Depot doesn't do its HomeWork. It would have taken your average 8th grader about 45 minutes to see that the employment situation was going to be grim if they'd happened upon the Annual 4th of July celebration here, such a simple thing, really, but Home Depot dropped the ball, and now they're paying the price.

Well, he used to, anyway. I assume we're talking about the guy who used to play BB here on JS...he got into some legal trouble that everybody here tried to get him to back away from, but since he knew better, he was on the front page of the Pickens Pravda recently showing how much better he knew than us. My prediction that he will find himself committed to some mental health facility at some date in the future seems more and more like a chilling reality. I am truly sorry that it's going down like this, but we all told him he was going off the rails. And when I say we told him, we didn't spin him a fable, a parable, and we didn't cloak the whole thing in allegory, we told him flat out. Over and over. For about a year and half.

If you're looking for one to buy, I noticed one over on the old Federal Road just off Yellow Creek Road that looked like it was for sale. If you're unfamiliar with the area, I can give better directions if you need them.

How has 44-5-60 made them obsolete? That thing has been screwed, blued, and tattoed by the Legislature over the years until it doesn't really say anything at all anymore. It was originally intended to dissolve CC&R's in favor of local zoning, because it was apparently felt that the government has a compelling interest in being in control of such things.

However, there's more to the law than statute law, there's case law to consider. If you read the entire statute as it currently sits, there are more exceptions than rule. It goes on to exempt the Federal government, then all other governments, then it sets out to renew all covenants *unless* during a defined window of opportunity you can get 51% of the people who own property to execute a specific legal document terminating the covenants.

You can't get 51% of people in this fucking county to agree the sky is blue. Among folks who actually *want* covenants on property (and they're out there), they're never going to give it up if for no other reason than it's hurting some of their neighbors, a thing which brings joy into their blackened and blighted hearts.

That lake situation will work itself out, no worries. It may end in disaster, yes, but sometimes that happens, but the dividends that it pays in terms of entertainment for those not directly affected is priceless. It's part of what makes America great, as far as I'm concerned. There's no point in worrying about it because everybody affected already knows what's going to happen eventually, sort of like in New Orleans.

Well Mr. Jeff I appreciate your comeback. I personaly didn't get hammered by a real estate agent in the manner of which I mentioned. However I have lived in pickens county and witnessed several people get nailed.

O.C.G.A 44-5-60 is an interesting little deal regarding Home Owners Associations.I don't know if you are familiar with this but it is very interesting.

Let me give you an example there is a subdivision who is operating as an HOA at this time when this OCGA has made them obsolete.Non existant. In short the OCGA states that covenants that were written for 30 years are hereby changed to 20 years in municipalities which have adopted zoning ordanances. It is to my understainding that Pickens County adopted zoning ordanances in May of 05? Attorneys have advised that the covenants have expired on Dec 06 which would be the 20 year mark for this particular subdivision. It seems that the board of directors don't want to recognize this fact. Not only that but has decided to raise the annual dues and place liens on peoples property who is late on the dues payments.

This is only the tip of the iceberg however. These people have danced with the EPD of late and been fined due to a lake that they have, the lake is ok however the dam has been surveyed by a reputable corporation who builds dams locally, and has stated that the dam is " UNSAFE" and if the dam was brought to as built standards the dam would still be UNSAFE. Due to the changes in laws regarding dams and building thereof. These documents have been handed to the board of directors and have been tossed aside. (But Attorneys are looking hard at this information)

Therefore jepordizing the entire membership and thier financial future in the event there is another rain event lets say like IVAN and the dam is compromised. Personal property and people below the dam are in jeopardy and like sheep have not a clue. All of this information is public record.

The real estate agents are only the beginning of peoples problems in pickens county when it comes to the purchase of HOA properties. People must understand the implications to an HOA fully before they enter into an agreement with such.

This particular HOA is interesting, a board member is a local builder, another board member is a two time felon and another is a so called public relations specialist. One hell of a combination. One to surely steer clear of.

Look: Real estate agents exist for one purpose and one purpose only, that being to generate cash for real estate brokers and themselves, the game being to strengthen their resolve to one day become a broker and have a bunch of agents to generate free money for them in one of the ultimate pyramid games.

In the pursuit of this, your friendly smiling real estate agent will stab you in the back as many times as you will stand still for it. No adult should make the statement that they can't believe that an agent is not acting in their best interest, because the agent has an interest before the fact, and that interest is in creating the transaction which will net the agent his/her fees. I've seen agents, hungry for cash, tell sellers that such-and-such offer is the best they'll receive and advise the sale just to get the money.

Don't believe me? Let me take you through the math. If a agents's commission is 6%, just to name a number, and you are selling a property you've listed with the agent for $100K and someone offers $90K, here's the agent's point of view: $100K sale yields around $6K of maybe, $90K firm offer yields $5.4K of Hell Yeah.

The agent will advise the sale and tell you that you're doing great at that price, because while you're losing out on ten thousand dollars, they're only losing about six hundred, and it's all money they're making off *you* in the first place. This is a rough and simplified example, of course, but a valid one.

Real estate agents are the scum of the earth, they're directly responsible for wrecking what used to be a great little mountain community, and I have no use for one and neither does anybody else, really. It is my dream that every real estate agent who ever worked Pickens County is startled awake every night of their lives just as they're about to fall asleep by the combined anguished screams of 100,000 fleeced and clueless newbie homeowners. As a direct result of their malfeasance we've got a whole class of people who are in the real estate market or who own homes but aren't qualified either financially or otherwise to be in that position. There's too much to know, and the game is rigged. There are 110,000 plus houses for sale in Metro Atlanta today partially because the trend has been easy financing for all, but not all can handle it.

The CC&R problem you're talking about is a good case in point, and any half-assed title search would have turned up covenants on any piece of property. I've watched people sit down in front of a pile of paper at a real estate closing and just start signing where they're told, never reading a goddamn thing, and then they find out things like you've found out after the fact when it's too late.

Currently, I directly own three pieces of property in Pickens County, but only one of them is covered by CC&R. I knew this when I bought it because I did the title search myself. I paid next to nothing for the property because I considered that it wasn't whole (and it isn't, and neither is yours if it's under covenant). The other two aren't covered, nor would I ever allow them to be while I own them. You agree to accept this sort of thing when you buy, and if your real estate agent isn't doing their required disclosures, you have a case in court. If you sat down and started signing because you trusted somebody, then this was a lesson that was past due for you.

Historically, CC&R's have been accepted because people didn't know any better, and they were originally supposed to enhance the value of your property by making it impossible for you or your neighbors to fully enjoy the property. No, that doesn't make sense, but people bought it anyway. I'm not an attorney, but when asked I've been telling folks who were in impossible mortgage or real estate situations due to inexperience that what I would do is leave the keys on the kitchen counter and lock up when I left. It's the single most harmful thing you can do the real estate agents and the market in general, because it eventually creates a glut of properties on the market which in turn drives the prices down to levels of reality where the commissions aren't big enough to be worth screwing people en masse over like they are now.

The Federal government created this problem by dumping $88 billion dollars into the economy post 9/11, most of which went into housing speculation and made it possible for anybody with a Social Security number to get a home loan. In their usual fashion of creating a program to fix a problem they themselves created, there will probably be some sort of Homeowner Relief legislation to keep primary residence foreclosures from affecting your consumer spending/borrowing, and that's when the fun will *really* start in terms of people leaving the keys and walking out. In most cases their liability is limited to being foreclosed upon, and in most cases the home is the only asset anyway. The banks can't squawk much because they're limited by law to 90% of loan to value and most banks try to keep it around 80% (or they did back when I had to care about knowing those figures) so if they get burned on the deal the circumstances would have to be extraordinary.

I can't wait, personally. The pendulum always swings the other way, the chickens always come home to roost, and folks admit through painfully gritted teeth that old Uncle Jeff was right.

From: Juniperhills
Email: juniperhills@yahoo.com

What is going on with the local home owners associations? It seems to me that some of the people who are in control are basic NAZI's. the Outback subdivision has it's problems, Big Canoe, people who really think they have money, and of course Bent Tree which is pretty quiet, Salacoa Highlands what seems to be the dump of all the subdivisions with a lake that poses danger to everyone who comes near not to mention the membership and thier futures.

What happened to people actually owning thier own property (Allodial title Land Patents) Now there is home owners associations that the county backs largely because the county doesn't have to spend thier precious currency. I can see situations where the subdivisions are spending much time in courts due to the many nazi types who maintain positions on the board of directors. How many people here live in HOA's. Is this a view of the minority or is this the view of the majority?

I know of situations that are ugly and some that are brewing that will be more than entertaining for some. I just can't believe how some real estates sell properties and at closing hand the buyers the covenants, ( Oh yes and by the way there is covenants which govern your property) Now that you have signed the closing documents. What bullshit.

There's no way. For one, they've got total control as it sits, how does it benefit them to incorporate? I'm not terribly familiar with their setup, but to use Bent Tree as an example (I've got property there), BTCI owns *all* the common areas. The property owners don't participate in ownership or control and have no rights in any of it per the writings of the Property Manager in the BT newspaper several years ago.

If BTCI moved from a managed property to an incorporated city, wouldn't the common areas (including the lake, the pavillion area, the swimming pools, etc.) all become property of the newly created municipality? In other words, wouldn't they have to throw open the gate?

Talk about a lawyer field day...I'm not a lawyer, but I can draft the fuck out of a Civil action, and I'd have to do so in that case. Most likely, I'd end up fighting being swept into a Class Action with everybody else, I'd prefer to fight my own fight. I can't image the folks who have a million plus sunk into their BCC property would feel any differently, and some of them *are* lawyers.

Now, this isn't without precedent, mind you.

My mental legal database immediately handed me the Reedy Creek Improvement District, not a city, exactly, but its very own entity with powers usually reserved for municipalities. What's different? Well, for one thing, it's totally controlled by the Walt Disney Corp. which enables Disney to have its very own police force (Disney Security) complete with arrest powers and allows Disney to issue municipal bonds as if it were a city. There are some arguments over whether Disney Security has any right to conduct traffic stops, but if you're stopped for speeding by Disney Security, and they have guns, cop cars, and billy clubs, who are you to argue then? They can't impose fines but neither can the police in Georgia, that's a court function.

I think we're past the point where this can happen here, and in fact it couldn't happen there today. We've had a similar incident here already in the form of the Lockheed Nuclear Aircraft Project over in Dawson Forest, and that's still a law unto itself over there. Even in the case of Reedy Creek, the roads are public, though...

We have a family plot in Alpheretta and some of the head stones date back to the civil war. I never knew how far back my family went and that was my own fault for not taking the time to search and find out where I really came from. The awe I was in when looking at these headstones took my breath away. My family moved alot due to the military, so wherever we went we were really the only "Hendrix" in town. I moved to this area a little over a year ago and it always amazes me how many "Hendrix" there are in the phone book. I am proud of my ancestors, even the ones who screwed up, after all everyone can be a dumb-ass sometime.

From: Jeff

Oh, well, that explains that, then. I hated kids when I *was* a kid, for the most part. I couldn't wait to become an adult and have an opportunity to get out from under the control of the chronically stupid adults I was saddled with most of the time, and my "peer group" frankly just bored me most of the time. The one place they surprised *and* surpassed me was in the innate and total viciousness of children everywhere, which for some reason had been distilled into a very cold and concentrated form up here in Jasper. Some of them were more naturally vicious than I could be with several days of thought on the matter. I couldn't help but be impressed.

We become adults and somehow forget what it was *really* like to be a kid. It wasn't all idyllic fun and games, we were some *mean* little bastards when we were kids. Nothing was off limits, and if we couldn't torture one another properly for whatever reason, we'd do it psychologically. We knew we could slam our fists into each others' eye sockets and stomachs, knee each other in the groin, what have you, and the very worst thing that would happen is if we were observed, they'd take us into an office somewhere and hit us three times with the flat part of a board. We'd feign contrition and resolve to make it that much worse for whoever we happened to be torturing the first chance we got.

No, when I look at a child, I don't see someone's innocent darling, because nothing with a mouth is innocent anyway. I remember what little bastards we were, and reflect that the following generations probably aren't much of an improvement. And that's all before you have to deal with the lumbering, cowlike parents, assuming they ever show up. That's another thing: Why are we doing this to ourselves? Go to Walmart and play Find The Skinny Person...it gets harder every day.

Anyway, I think you nailed it when you said they're only human. Everything else you were talking about fit into that pretty well.

This is going to piss a lot of people off, but I've been all over the country and I have never seen any single place with so many people that loved to suck up to other people whom they perceived as being in a position to favor them as I have always seen in Jasper, and I mean since 1976. I'm all in favor of upward mobility, but there's something peculiar to the area that seems to make a lot of folks here think that the way to fame, fortune, and prosperity is to suck the assholes of anyone who already seems to have one or more of the above.

A good example off the top of my head? Somebody in the county government/power structure decided it would be a *great* thing to spend road funds to buy signs saying "Share The Road" with a picture of a bicycle, and put them up on Cove Road. This is beyond stupid, of course. If there's one road in the county where *nobody* needs to be on a bicycle, it's Cove Road. You're taking your life in your hands in a car, let alone a bike. If that weren't bad enough, we're being asked to "Share The Road" but the bikes aren't going to share the gas taxes or the ad valorum taxes, are they?

Of course, there's only one reason this was done, and it was to suck, and vigorously suck, the assholes of whoever was putting on this bullshit "Tour de Georgia" thing, because that's what we think we have to do here. Jasper, it's okay to tell folks from Florida, or Atlanta, or Washington, or wherever to kiss *your* ass. Not only is it okay, they expect it, and it's good for them and good for you. You don't have to run after anybody as if what you have is nothing and as if you have to try for every crumb off the table of anybody who might drop a crumb. Jasper/Pickens is like that low self-esteem kid trying like hell to nail down a date for the prom with anybody, anywhere just to be sure they're not left out in the cold, but we're *not* the ugly ducklings here, folks. Why do we do this to ourselves?

I always think of how the Weavers and the Pools and the Coxes, Hendrixes, Pendleys, Blackwells, and all the old settler families came here and literally beat a living out of the land here, and I wonder what they'd think if they were here today and could watch all their descendents engage in this shameless ass-kissing that for me has come to define the locality. Those people had pride. They were poor, many of them, but they had pride. What have *we* got, and what have we done with what we were given? I'm sure there isn't a lot of reason to believe they'd be proud of us at all, if they could, they'd probably take it back from us in shame.

What's particularly troubling is the way that folks can't distinguish between the haves and have-nots. I've seen folks suck up to others over a sticker on a car for a gated community. If you don't live here, you won't believe what I'm saying, but if you live here you've probably seen it yourself. What the fuck is that about? It's as if there's a shortage of asses to suck, and nobody wants to miss one. I've seen folks sucking up to clothes that were still owed on, cars that were still owed on (in some cases, owed on more than the book value), and houses that folks will never pay for in their entire lives.

Let it go, people. Step away from the ass, realize what we've got here is pretty damn good, and learn to enjoy it rather than running after something that you wouldn't like if you got it. Your problem isn't that what you have isn't good enough, it's that you don't know how to appreciate it.

Teachers, just like people, come in all different shapes, sizes, and mental states. After all, they are human. However, over the last 11 years of my daughters school life here in Pickens county, I have witnessed things that have absolutely blown my mind. Office staff openly gossiping about the financial problems of students and their families, dresscodes and rules being 'bent' to accomidate students with social clout, and last but not least, prinipals and teachers obviously ignoring low income parents at open-houses to make extra time for the 'bigger' fish of Pickens county. My daughter and I have met some of the most wonderful teachers and administrators over the years, but we have also been deemed 'unimportant'. Showing this kind delibrate bias, I believe, is one reason some parents avoid being involved in their childs school life.

I really don't see why folks continue to teach in the Government Schools, it's just asking too much. With a BA or BS, there are a dozen more lucrative things that you could do.

Between unfunded Federal mandates and local politics, it just seems like more work and trouble than I'd want for the money. Yes, I know somebody's got to do it, but it's going to be somebody else other than me.

On the subject of Student Homefronts, a child psychologist once told me that he could cure 90% of his patients if it were somehow legal to kill the parents...

Hey, Hairy, I'm really sick of your hearsay bullshit regarding teachers. You're hatred obviously comes from the fact that you didn't get along with teachers when you were in school.

For the record, much more damage (physically, psychologically, and sexually) is done to kids on the homefront than anywhere else. This is especially true in relation to meth.

Take a poll of Pickens County's students and see how many kids witness meth addiction by family members and friends and ask these kids what they go home to each day after school. Also, take a poll on homefront sexual and physical abuse and see how many kids suffer at the hands of moms, dads, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc.

Then, after you collect the numbers, take a poll on the number of teachers who have abused kids in these ways.

If more teachers than relatives are guilty, I'll kiss your hairy ass. If it's the other way around, you need to shut the fuck up.

No, I hadn't posted any of it yet, it's been too pretty outside this weekend for me to fuck around on the Internet much, so I'm behind in updates. Nobody cares about JS in the summertime, the only time JS gets any play is when there's a big issue locally and people want some unfiltered news or commentary. Otherwise, most of us just go about our lives.

It'll pick back up when it gets absolutely too hot to go out, and if we actually get the Fall rains this year you'll see some more posting. In the winter here, when it's so bitter out, folks get online more.

On your issue, I do feel, and very strongly, that any initiative to test high school students or student atheletes or what-have-you should also include testing for any faculty member involved with the project. It's only fair, and it sets a better example than the example they want to set, that being that some folks are above the law and will find a way to avoid both testing and justice. If we're going to force kids to piss in a bottle, the coach should be the first in line.

Otherwise, they ought to leave that feel-good shit alone. Testing doesn't stop people from doing drugs, it never has. Ask the probationer/parolee of your choice. Kids know about how long it takes for serum drug concentrations to drift below detectable levels, and if they don't, there's always the Interweb. That's part of why everybody loved cocaine: 72 hours, baby!

Dont you think our children are more important than the mail-after all mail doesnt die or become addicted. There have been several instances of teachers who have done actual time for having sex with both male and females while a middle school teacher-go to gadeptofcorrections and look at Pickens sex offenders list you will also find one of our wonderful law men on there-well exlawman now. Hey you stupid azz teachers you are not there to teach Alice how to screw or Jerry how to roll a joint correctly-you are also not there to impart your old hippy bullshit from the sixities eithers-HEY HIPPIES-YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE YUPPIES NOW!! We also had a male teacher with short man syndrome be mean to the fat kids and try to pinch the cute girls on the ass-he would go into fitts and throw things that belonged to students out in the hall-HEY YOU LITTLE BASTARD, YOU BETTER BE GLAD YOU DIDNT DO THAT TO MY KID. Same teacher refused to let a student with asthma go to the nurse to get her inhaler-dont make me name names because BYGOD I CAN.

Kennesaw is a good school. In fact, Jessica is looking at doing some work there. Their facilities for Bio/Chem are better than ours here at Southern Tech, partially because the programs here are just starting up to compliment what we've always done, engineering.

What's funny about the guy walking around looking for somebody to provide him a urine sample is that most folks probably aren't clean, either. In some instances, I've heard of people actually selling their kids' urine in order to allow other folks to pass drug tests. Only in America...we talk about how our precious kids are all on drugs, but the kids are the only ones who can get us through the piss test.

I've been here at Southern Tech in Marietta for years. This semester, I'm teaching the Laboratory portion of the second-level Electronics class.

I love talking about drugs, because almost everybody eventually betrays their stupidity on the subject. The fact is that the prohibition or "control" of certain substances as we practice it is totally arbitrary, and it flies in the face of human nature. This current government we have understands this, and they've made more moves than any administration before them to make absolutely everything either a food or a drug. That's why toothpaste has a drug label now. Look on your deodorant, it's a drug, too, and this is your Tax Dollars At Work.

Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, pot, meth...what do they all have in common? They are just puddles of different colored shit lying on a table or on the ground, doing nothing until some human being takes the time to introduce them into his/her system. They're meaningless outside that context, and none of them can attack a human under their own power. As a result, it's foolish in the extreme to attach all the stigma to mere chemical compounds. What we're really talking about is human nature, and human behavior. Drugs are a distraction, just something to blame to keep from having to admit our own faults or lack of understanding.

Meth. We had a Dozen Idiot March Against Meth here not long ago, and I wanted to rent a billboard that said "Opening Soon: Uncle Jeff's House of Meth! We've got Barbecue Meth, Sweet and Sour Meth, Cool Ranch Meth, Kentucky Fried Meth, and for the traditionalists, Meth-flavored Meth!" Meth can't hurt you. Like so many things, if you leave it alone, it'll return the favor.

We did however graduate high school. We worked and raised him to be a responsible man, to work for what he got and and not to depend on any handouts to survive.

I agree with you 100% that kids now days grow up seeing their parents living off the working, taxpaying folks in this country and think it's the only way to live. Where I work they require a drug screening to work there. Day before yesterday there was a guy walking around asking for someone to pee in a bottle for him so he could pass a drug test. I guess the drug users depend on the hard workers to supply them with EVERYTHING to support their habits.

If you don't mind me asking, where and what do you teach?

You say that like you think DFACS has never been to *my* house. My ex-wife has DFACS on speed-dial. I was literally on a first-name basis with them for years, and after a while they finally stopped coming out. DFACS is not your enemy, and there are very real limits as to how far "up in your shit" they can get. They're bound by the law, just like everybody else. Well, most everybody else.

I'm not following you on the teacher rant. Nobody is the angel they make themselves out to be, and premarital sex doesn't need promoting. Premarital, marital, and post-marital sex is its own reward, even for those of you who do it as poorly as your spouses/significant others tell me you do.

As far as pot goes, pot is what Americans have instead of vacation time and benefits. The only person who ever gets to take any time off in this country is Bush, who has spent about four of the last eight years on vacation. The rest of America smokes pot. Cops, teachers, preachers, you name it. We make a big, big deal out of drug testing blue collar folks, but the fact is that we grow billions of dollars worth of pot in this country every year and we don't export it. We bogart the hell out of that stuff, and take as much of all other countries' surplus as they'll turn loose of. Then we form the Magic Smoking Circle outside at whatever party we happen to be attending, and we Pass the Dutchie. Nothing is more American, really, because The Magic Smoking Circle sums up in one experience that greatest of American characteristics, Hypocrisy. Americans will pass a joint around and bitch about how poorly the War on Drugs is going, and all with a straight face. It brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it. Not that *I* smoke pot, by the way. I'm one of those poor State Employees that is subject to random drug screenings...

You people are way, way too afraid of your government. The gist of the writings of Thomas Jefferson is in part that the government should be afraid of *you*. That's why Jefferson, et al., made such a point of letting you have guns, to aid the government in its caution when dealing with you.

There's only one thing that scares the government worse than an armed citizenry, and that is somebody who is (a) crazy and (b) rich. I have been largely successful in convincing folks that I'm nuts, so much so that at this point I actually believe that I could get by without carrying my guns everywhere I go. If I wanted to do so, that is.

Yes, by all means, in typical American fashion let's blame the victims. The kids and their behavior are the result of the worthless Boomer fuck generation and their self-absorbed, cow-like, overfed, Type II Diabetic/Insulin resistant asses. The kids didn't ask for this. Add to that a half century of official government support of the stupid and weak, and you have a bountiful crop of folks who are either stupid/weak or self-absorbed to the exclusion of consensus reality. There's no middle class anymore, and no middle ground, either. Everybody's so goddamn special they can barely stand themselves, and you just know that Aura of Special extends to little Bratley and Snotleigh, too.

Average teacher pay runs north of $50k/year, and only a handful of folks are willing to step forward because it just isn't worth it. I'm fucked if I'd touch it for less than $100k. Teaching college is bad enough.

I love watching the fucking idiots who didn't need to darken the door of any school anywhere flunk out of college, it's one of my greatest pleasures. The Hope Grant was supposed to make sure No Child was Left Behind, but all it did was create 13th Grade. When the kids can't cut English 1101 and flunk out, it's funny to watch their fat fuck helicopter Boomer parents come rushing in trying to play Damage Control and threaten to sue (Matriculation Through Litigation) or whatever, all to no avail, because you can't sue Junior smart. Stupid is forever. I want to tell them they can comfort themselves in the notion that the child is, in fact, their offspring, in case they were wondering about paternity.

My wish for you, dear reader, is that something on *your* job fills you with the same sort of pleasure. Is there something that seems like the definition of Poetic Justice on *your* job?

Ah-Schools-One of my favorite subjects.

Lets get these poor sickly kids off the bus and let them walk a couple miles like they used to. Save the taxpayer money, improve the kids health, disposition and morale all at the same time. Hot school, hot classrooms, you bet and not too many years ago before Uncle Sam, the teachers union and those who would glorify their jobs and salaries saw to it that kids that don and wont mind dont have to study in the old fashioned way with the window open for fresh air while the sun shines down. They don't have to obey the teacher anymore, cause the teachers cannot deliver any form of punishment to the little perverts when they missbehave no matter what they do.

Get the do-gooders (government) out of schools and let the system return to when schools, and teachers were allowede to do the function the taxpayers pay for. I remember a school board meeting where a local yokel displayed a 3 foot trophy for sports while another guy displayed a three foot stack of books.

Guess, in a millisecond which one got the money for further pursuit. I'm not against sports or the three foot trophy which means little to anyone after three years, but I'm against the forced taxpayer supported farce that our schools have become.

My $2.00 worth for today (inflayshunn & all U no)

Why, hell no they're not thinking about the kids, they never do.

Year 'Round Compulsory Schooling is good for everybody *except* the kids. Now, the kids who have the capacity to get the material being taught can be bored out of their skulls year 'round instead of just during the school year while they wait on the stupidest fucking kid in the room to *finally* get it.

The school systems are just short of public masturbation on the issue, because it means even more funding and more security and for those with a socialist bent, it means year 'round indoctrination for your kids. Think of the move to year 'round school as Pickens County's own little Communist Revolution. Sneaky fuckers. When this was first proposed, years ago, and everybody shouted it down, they made plans to start ever earlier and finish ever later until they got what they wanted anyway. They're almost there, and there isn't a parent in Pickens County with the balls to question it.

The parents are all happy because they believe it's going to get them out of having to arrange for child care during the summer, but what is going to happen is that with all the flexibility of having the entire year to schedule actual school days, it will soon become irresistable to schedule two weeks of vacation here and there for the faculty at odd intervals. Parents will then have to scramble to find somebody who wants to fool with their bad-ass, misbehaving kids for just two weeks here and there. Some folks will have families that will help, but some folks will just have to miss some work and get fired. This strikes me as poetic justice.

So, no, the answer to your question is that nobody gives a fuck how hot the kids get on the bus or in the classroom. The parents just want them out from underfoot like the inconveniences they are and always were. If they cared about their kids, they wouldn't be sending the kids to the Government School in the first place, but that's another topic.

You do know that by-and-large, especially in large metro areas, the Government School teachers send their own kids to private schools, right? What do they know that you don't know?

You no I have to say this it just really bothers me that school is starting back on the 3rd of August. Being a parent and a bus driver of pickens co I can't belive it . By the time school was out the kids were already getting sick, having nose bleeds and feeling very bad when they were getting off these buses .

I think that the people that are voting to have school start back soon should have to ride these buses. I think they should also consider not haveing so many weeks out of school durning the winter and maybe letting them start back a little later .Its funny to me when I was growing up we didnt go back to school sometimes till September . I really am put out with the school board that they can't see how harmful it is to these children to have them back in school so early not only on the bus that is hot but also to be put out on the playgrounds durning the day . It just seems to me that they are not thinking about the kids here at all .

You know, Jasper, on some levels, is better than it used to be; but like a lot of other areas in the country, it is becoming more and more a place of haves and have-nots. That is sad.

It's also a place, like much of the rest of the country, where a lot of honest hard-working people are taken advantage of.

One of the popular local establishments operated under the ownership of one family for almost three decades. For some reason, the Pickens public thought the man who was the patriarch of this ownership was just the most glorious human being in Jasper.

He kept some workers hanging on with promises of money when he sold the business. Well, he sold the business and didn't give those employees who had been with him for years, some even as long as he'd had the store, anything at all. He also lied and told the employees he had not sold the store, making a sneaky exit for the new owners to take over.

He didn't so much as have a formal dinner for them as a good-bye or even offer any type of thanks to his loyal customers. He has hurt so many people, and the thing is, he doesn't care at all. He was only in it for the money all along, at whatever cost to anyone else. He thought he owned these people; but in the end, he didn't. He doesn't even have their respect anymore.

Another shame in Jasper.

I have to take up for Dr. Hooker cuz he is one of the few good ones-he will charge you his cost for tests if you dont have insurance-he sells meds for low prices right in his office that would cost you that much if you had insurance in copay-example-nuerontin, which is expensive either way-yes he has lots of patients-that says what kind of doctor he is right there-it takes awhile to see him but he does try to help you when you do-he doesnt have an attitude like alot of MD's(the god like arrogance)

Dr. Hooker is a really nice person besides being a doctor and I think he really does care about his patients. He has some good folks working for him too, but sometimes he gets a bad apple-all doctors do-considering how scattered most medical offices are, Hooker is doing good there too. I think he may have to hire some more nurses if anything.

The new Md's up here owned by Graveside fall short in many ways-I have not seen Gonzalez so on him I can't comment with personal knowledge. Graveside does not own Dr. Hooker and they dont like it-trust me here, this I do know. Only thing his office could improve upon at all is the wait time and the time it takes to get results of tests, etc. I am a nurse, so I do know what I see when I go to a MD. In my book Hooker is on the top, any problems are lower on the food chain than actually being the MD's.

The big problem with doctors now is there are sooooo many specialists and hardly ever can one doctor treat all your ailments. This can cause a breakdown in communication-this is where you have to try to run interferrence-provided you dont have a God complex doctor, they appreciate the effort and all the information and help they can get from other Docs and you. The MD who was busted at Tate was a prime example of a God complex MD-not to mention he was an asshole who I have been told really didnt want to be a doctor in the first place-I am glad his hateful ass is history-I dont know the new MD's working the old Tate clinic but I think Graveside calls the shots there too-I had a bad experience with the dopehead MD who got busted there-I suspected he was on something before he was busted-so I was not all that surprised when it happened-YOU DONT WANT AN MD ON DRUGS THAT IS FOR CERTAIN.

You are entitled to your own medical records so get test results xray results and make copies for specialty MD's-keep a running list of meds and there are online PDRS look it up and the drugs that dont go with it-OTC especially. Help yourself by doing that for yourself.

Well, in fairness, there are only about two in town, so they're bound to get behind a bit. All the others are drones of Graveside or specialists.

How do you pay, cash or do you have some sort of insurance copay? Not that I agree with it, but that can make a difference, too. They have to be able to turn a profit in order to pay the help and keep the lights on, and the premiums they pay on malpractice insurance exceeds what fifty percent or more of Pickens County households net in a year.

Personally, I like Gonzales really well. Everybody is different, but he's done me a lot of good.

Y'all know what?- there were actually two thrill hills in Pickens-I am an old timer compared to some of you-the ones on old airport road and the one on Georgianna-we had the truck stop but people older than me used to park right in town-they used to smoke pot right out in front of the old jail and the cops were none the wiser cuz they didnt know what it smelled like-it was a dumber time but I dont know about it being more pure- then I started driving in 76-thought I was the shit too-like all teens-wasnt too long after that they started enforcing that curfew-this cop named Romeo used to enjoy hassling us all-the city limits ended at old Lawsons Chevrolet back then-that was the end of Romeo's jurisdiction back then too-if you had to go through town you sneaked through like down past Bellwood and those back roads or through camp road to old 5 and on up to the DQ-there were so many broken beer bottles on that railroad track at the end of the DQ parking lot, had anyone fell down there, they would have been cut to ribbons-people got drunk, smoked dope, were fried and shit faced in that parking lot on a regular basis-we were not too good and had more area to rome outside the city laws reach-the old roadside park was there then and it was another hell hole as bad, if not worse than the DQ- all the fights took place there.

Compared to now I think dopewise and alcohol wise we were actually worse back then- Jasper was dry and bootleggers sold to most anyone. The law was altogether different back then too. If somebody got too bad, Harley locked them up in that old jail up town, then we would ride by and scream what kind of bird cant fly? All the prisoners yelled at every woman who walked in the bank. Still we said "THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS!!" Sometimes now I dont know if they were or not.

I feel your pain, I've got two of my own. We weren't bad kids though, most of us. I drank a whole bunch, which is never good, but I never did anything harder than that. I even got broke from that, come to think of it. I was with two people we graduated with, drinking Jack Daniels and Coke, and I got out of the car to pee or something, and they thought it would be funny to leave me.

I lurched out and jumped on the hood of the car and grabbed the windshield wipers, cutting the hell out of my hands in the process, and I bled like a stuck pig while their drunk asses laughed at me for bleeding. That was the end of that. Until this day I won't drink unless I'm where I'm going for the night.

I remember those hills, too, out toward the airport. Do you remember that Dorsey girl that got killed over there somewhere?

I never got ticketed on that curfew deal but I did get stopped. I always wondered how enforceable that actually was. They run curfews for underage kids now, which I suppose is fine, but a curfew outside of some kind of Martial Law would be difficult.

If it happened now, I'd probably just get a Federal pre-emption of some sort. It's so much easier to do that than deal with the local power structure.

Ya know, I can still remember back when the city had a curfew of 11:00 pm weeknights and midnight on weekends. Then we got the Amaco there in town and it fought and won the right to stay open 24/7 and things started changing form there. When it first started staying open all night I remember everyone going out at all hours of the night just because they could without being ticketed, although most were still pulled over and questioned. All and all looking back those were good times to me and the county seemed a lot purer and safer and if something bad happened you knew before morning. We even had Thrill Hills then. I bet a lot of people now don't even know where it was. I'm glad it's gone now, I know my girls would try it out, oh yeah, Im getting payed back for all the hell I dished out for my mother over the years. Yeah, out in East Pickens, where I live, away from the beautifully manicured environs of the gated communities, a man pointing a gun at some kids would not meet with the approval of the general populace. "He needed killin'" still exists in the minds of most of us out here as "Justifiable Homicide".

The Jasper/Pickens I used to know wouldn't put up with that, so either Jasper has changed, I never really knew it, or there's more yet to the story. I remember a time when we had about two cop cars for the entire county, and that was all we needed because people were too busy with their families and minding their own business to engage in openly stupid behavior, but I guess that's all different now.

Now, we actively seek to keep our children dependent upon us for the fear we'll become irrelevant or something, and then we're surprised when we run up on adults with active and open childish behavior who never seem to move forward or grow up. We keep stupid people nice and stupid by making it unnecessary for them to get any smarter, because we just go ahead and pay to feed and care for them. Why should they do anything different? They've got it made.

I hope everybody involved has learned their lesson and it doesn't become necessary for Jasper/Pickens to "cure" anything.

I heard that he had a back ground of threatening folks with weaponds whether they needed it or not.The last case in point was indeed croxing the line and should have gotten in trouble, possibly a small sentence. That being said I don't know how much time he got but here in HillCIty a snosy local or two accidentially upon a man brandishing a weapon at a woman and her small children could have made matters worse in a heart beat with jail and court being the last thing he would have been worried about.

That being said, let him out and live unnoticed and free of riff raff wanting to stir the emotional pot thats could be brewing. If he returns with the attitude and weapons assisted courage than someone sometime with cure him of ailment. Jasper.

Now that all that seems to be over, what did he do? I don't mean what was he charged with, I know that well enough. Usually for someone to be made this much an example of, they have to have drawn down on a cop or something equally stupid.

Usually, at least, when the punishment doesn't seem to fit, there's more to the story. What was it?

Okay, I am having a little trouble with this one. Since when did it matter what sexual preference someone is when they are doing a job? My only concern would be if the person was educated enough to fix what it was that was broken.

It seems pretty shallow to think that work done is only done right by what: a Cro-Magnon hetero alpha male?

Or is it the fact that your narrow brian cannot grasp that people different from you actually function in society other than being there for your personal entertainment?

Grow up and borrow some maturity from those two that you seem to have such an issue with. They obviously have more than you were able to achieve.

Now I'm off to pay my respects to my Aunt Tillie (formerly Uncle Ted). I'm out...

Not much being said for a while about the Roman Adams case from last year, but a lot of people have had opinions, for or against. Innocent or guilty. Now that it is close to the time he will be rejoining his family, I hope everyone will give him the chance he deserves to pick up his life again, and treat him without malice, regardless of their personal feelings about the situation.

He has paid a high price, for a crime others, recently, have paid very little for. I look forward to seeing him, and wish him well.

Yeah the road side park was before my time too, but I got to ride through a few times with a couple buddies that were older than me. Saw a good throw down out there once also. Most of my time when I got older was spent at the look off, sharp top or at bear grass drinking and what ever happened.

People, for the love of God, please stop doing this to your children.

I know you think they're something special and shouldn't have a really common name, but come the hell on. You might as well have named this child Osama or something for all the hell that name is going to put the child through in its life.

Speaking of kids, and troubles with kids...I never thought I'd say this in a million years, but I think we're going to have to return to a military draft in this country. This will perform two functions, and immediately. It will return a sense of order and give a sense of pride to these six foot tall monstrosities with dead eyes shuffling half-lifelessly along behind Mom in the mall while she power-shops. I see so many kids that fucked-up Boomer parents (mothers with sons, especially, for some reason) have turned into pets, basically, and on the other end of the spectrum are these wildchild types that Jack was just talking about.

The other function performed by this is it will force Americans to be interested in America's foreign policy and stop a bunch of bullshit like this Iraq thing before it starts. There'd have been a good bit more reaction at the ballot box if Mumsy and Duhdie knew that Bratley and Snotleigh were potentially going to have to ship out to where there were (shiver) minorities.

RE: Theaters, movie houses and other once popular places.

We used to go to the movies locally till it got so kids, or someone, cut up the seats with a knife, threw junk, trash, gum & other slime on the floor, then loud mouthed everything and everybody till it was useless to try to watch anything. It needed a high pressure fire hose wash down every day to clean the junk out to the gutter.

I blame the down fall on parents who wouldn't or couldn't keep their kids in any sort of logical behaviour pattern and figured it was easier to send them out to do whatever than to put up with them at home.

Uncle Sam and our elected officials helped out on this situation by taking discipline out of schools, homes and hearts that might otherwise have maintained some. It got so no parent was allowed to 'traumatize' their little butts to keep them in line without getting dumped on by the do-gooders in high positions including the courts and law-enforcement. It continues yet today, and has become ingrained in our 'improved' society. Proof of this is in children killing their parents and parents killing their children.

It was far easier and more prudent to just stop going or supporting a theater in Jasper as in many other small towns.

What used to be a classic small-town movie house became a dump and all the maintenance in the world couldn't have stopped it.

My $2 worth for today you lucky perverts -inflation & all you know.

From: Jeff
Email: jeff@jaspersucks.com

If you mean the one up by Dairy Queen, that was a little before my time. I graduated High School here in 1985 and they closed that before I started driving because somebody had gotten robbed or shot or something, I can't remember the details.

The theatre was in horrible shape by the time they finally gave it up. I think the very last time I was in there, it was for a midnight showing of Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains The Same". It was as full as I'd ever seen the old place, I can't imagine why they didn't do that more than they did because it looked like a money-maker. It was open for a while after that, I don't think it finally closed for good until about ten years ago but I shudder to think what it must have looked like inside at that point. Hell, the old seats were falling apart. Tate Elementary is about a hundred years old and those seats are in better shape than the old theatre's seats were.

That business has gotten so cut-throat that I don't know if a little theatre can make it anymore. The big chains like Carmike cut deals with the studios and I think that's about the only way they're remaining profitable, that and charging folks twenty bucks for two cokes and a tub of popcorn.

It's the same sort of thing that makes it hard for anybody to come out with a profit. If you haven't seen it yet, you're going to see some builders run into the ground if they've got very much inventory or spec houses. With consolidation in the banking and credit card businesses, and with massive defaults due to a number of factors including adjustable rate mortgages and predatory lending, some of these local papers are going to have to print a supplement to keep up with foreclosures. In Marietta, the big real estate sign out on I-75 said there were nearly 110,000 homes for sale in the area and just lots of those are "distressed" properties that the banks are going to end up with if they don't sell.

I'm waiting for the tipping point when everybody starts going broke, then they'll be some massive opportunity to acquire property at bargain basement prices. Until then, I'm going to sip coffee and watch.

I remember the old theatre back when Ole Miss Maddox I think was her name ran it. Early early 80's back when we had the Ben Franklins and the Radio Shack was where Mark The Millers office is now. It did just dwindle out to nothing, they were behind in getting the newest released movies and the upkeep sort of fell way behind so the youger folks found their way up to the kicking hole and the old road side park. Remember the ole road side park there Jeff?

yourstruly, you're a full-blown idiot. Your short message has more factual errors than most people can cram into a screed 10 times longer...

First, the shop is NOT on Main Street, it is on Church Street.

Second, the two "queers" as your bigoted mind describes them, are the building and business owners, NOT the mechanics. As you accurately pointed out, they are certainly no mechanics...fact is, from what I have heard, they probably don't know the difference between a ratchet and a pry bar...HOWEVER...they don't try to be the wrench turner there.

They hired a guy who is probably one of the best three or four mechanics in a 3 county area to turn wrenches for them. His name is Pat and he is GOOD. I don't much like him, but as far as his mechanicing skills, you will look far and long to find someone better.

As for the ass-kicking the gay guy got at Talona Creek Campground...it was a couple of bigoted, inbred, "Deliverance" types that ganged up on one person and showed what cowards they are. The best description I can think of for them is "pieces of shit...human pond scum". I hope the guy can identify them, I hope they get arrested, convicted, and do some serious time...and become someone's girlfriend while in jail. That would be the very definition of poetic justice.

So I've heard, but I'd prefer not to drive anybody off before they read anything else just because they saw one word that made them think JS was a "hate speech" board. That's why I really wish we'd find another word, one that didn't have such a history, preferably. This was part of what got us blocked from the county schools, not that that isn't a good thing. JS was never meant for children.

One time, when somebody dear to most of the locals (me included) was injured, I put up a picture that said something to the effect of "pray for this person" and the next few posts after that complained about curses in postings, because due to the picture caption saying "pray for this person" they thought JS was a religious board! It seems to take just one word or one picture to make folks call the whole thing off.

In reference to the big, burly men attacking the smaller 195 lb one, I never know when people write stuff on JS if they dreamed it or it really happened. Over the years of living in Jasper, I have learned that a good portion of the local population can't always differentiate between something they dreamed and something that really occurred.

Don't perpetuate the hate. The "N" word does not refer to any race religion or creed when used properly.

Sorry if you were offended, but when two 6ft plus 260 lb men attack a 5'11' 195 lb guy, I will continue to think of them as the "N" word. I like your explanation of "GAYDAR"

From: Jeff
Email: jeff@jaspersucks.com

Easy there! Do we *have* to use the n-word? Isn't there something a little more descriptive and perhaps less divisive? Not a whole lot of non-Caucasian Americans read JS, but some do.

Nobody even answered my question about how you're supposed to be able to tell someone is homosexual just by looking at them. Should I take that to mean that you really *can't* tell?

Someone on the radio last night said he had a foolproof method of discerning gayness: Since studies have shown that one in ten people are homosexual, next time you're with a group of friends numbering ten or more and you look around and realize that you know for a fact none of them are gay, then it's *YOU*.

I figured the family wanted to do what was best for the kid in the long run. It's hard when there's kids involved in a thing like this, the kid is already down one parent and then say the jury returns the death penalty, which I think is still an automatic appeal in Georgia, the appeals are exhausted over ten or twenty years, just enough time for the kid to grow to adulthood and maybe have time heal some of the wounds, and then when the wounds are as healed as they're going to get, you see on TV or read in the paper or maybe get a letter from dear old Dad saying "Hi, it's me, by the way, I'm getting the Magic Needle later this week...what's going on in *your* life?".

When there's a divorce, the kids almost always find a way to make it their fault. How much worse must this situation be for a kid? I can't imagine.

Pretty much. These days, it's not what's in your heart, it's what's on your car. Or your billboard.

What pisses me off is that it probably costs a thousand bucks a month to rent that billboard, and it probably cost somewhere around a grand to have that billboard designed and produced. Assuming Jesus Christ ever actually existed, it would make Him violently ill to see that billboard, and if there's a Judgement Day, then somebody is going to have to answer why they took His name in vain. Yes, they did, because if you actually *read* the Bible instead of thumping it, you'll see that He said He wanted people healed and fed in His name. There was never anything about billboards, unless the King James Version isn't a good translation, after all. If there's only *one* hungry child in the whole of East Tennessee (and I bet there is), and some fool spent thousands on a *billboard* for the name of Jesus instead of finding and feeding that child in the name of Jesus, then somebody is going to Hell if anything about Christianity is real, and they *ought* to go to Hell. There are very few cases as clear-cut as this.

To show you just a small part of what I mean, I offer the following photographic evidence:

I remember the country being much more religious in general twenty or so years ago than today. People actually went to all these churches we've got around here. They didn't put all this shit on their cars, though, and they sure didn't feel the need to put up Jesus Billboards...what has changed?

Is it that folks feel less secure and they're trying to drown it out with over-the-top zealotry?

Dr. Mahmood is my daughters doctor and he is great. He always has student doctors in there so your child ends up getting seen by at least 3 doctors. I was concerned with some of the shots and a link to Autism and before we made a decision on what to do he gave us a video, booklets and any other information he could find on my concerns. He told me to look them over before we made a decision. I believe he truelly cares unlike some other doctors, mainly Doctor Lefever. When my daughter was a few days old I took her in for her first visit. They didn't even take her temp, than they told me to bring her back in 3 weeks for a check up. When I went back for the checkup I explained to the doctor that my daughter was crying for hours at a time, her response " well take her home and bring her back in two weeks to see if it changes." Than she had the nerve to charge me 66.00 $ because I brought up a concern. This was 66.00 $ on top of the regular doctors fee!!! I will never return to her, I beg my mom everyday to find a new doctor for herself and she said it is too much of a hassel starting over with a new doctor( my mom is in a wheelchair and disabled). Sad that she keeps getting taken advantage of.

Isn't he a pediatrician? I took my kids to pediatricians until I figured out that Gonzales was just as good with kids as adults. It sure was handy not to have to go to Marietta anymore each time one of them got a sniffle.

I was taken to the Tate Clinic as a child, but I wouldn't have taken my child there by choice. I think I did, though, a time or two, when the oldest one was just a baby. I was broke as hell then and I think my mom offered to pay if I'd go to Tate Clinic and I ended up doing what I had to do. There was nothing wrong with Boswell, of course, I just never liked Tate Clinic and the memory lingered. They could discover a cure for cancer and decide to dispense it only from the Tate Clinic and it would still give me pause. It may have had something to do with the nearness of a cemetery. We used to walk around in the Tate Cemetery for the three or four hours it always took one of my brothers/stepbrothers/halfbrothers to be seen by the doctor there. Southern Gothic charm at its best, that place. The cemetery, I mean, not the clinic.

After I got where I could pay my own bills again, I started going to Perrow. I liked him. He was a no-bullshit kind of guy, at least with me. He had the gall to die on me, and I had to find a replacement again. This was around the same time Gonzales showed up here and I rolled the dice, and I've been seeing him ever since. I need a doctor that hasn't forgotten he's a human being, too, and they're in short supply all over the world. If I was looking for a god, I'd go back to fucking church.

Not to get all racial or anything, but has anybody ever noticed that for the most part it seems to be white people who get the Dr. God complex? I've seen a handful of Indians with it, but I haven't had any direct problems with them. I seem to get into it with white doctors (male *and* female) who think getting an MD implies some sort of holy mystique that I should defer to in thought, word, and deed instead of a license to help people.

Hospitals hospitals. we try to make to canton if we can because we feel its just a better hospital and a lot of that felling is due to the fact we grew up here and still remember the one chair lobby in the emergency room. We also know about all the horror stories with the local quacks that practice here. This doesn't enclude Dr. Richard Gonzolas of course(our family docter). But if you have the bad luck of visiting enough emergency rooms and or hospitals you'll find the same sorry neglect and down right dangerous situations at every hospitals. Human nature in most seems to always have lazy know it all's looking down their noses and just don't have the time to care anymore for they are there doing their jobs and nothing more. even if that job requires caring and thoughtfulness.

Jessica there is a small range open to the public that most people do not know about. It is over by the dump, right before you hit old jones mountian road I believe on 136. You head north on 515, go right at the ctigo towards talking rock. Turn left at the first intersection, than right at the stop sign. Another left at the little park over rr tracks right at the veer by the church, follow that untill you get to the stop sign, go left at stop sign. Keep going untill you pass the dump than if you look down the hill on the right hand side you will see a small range, there is a blue gate blocking the road. From what I understand you can go in just close the gate behind you and clean up your mess, don't leave shells laying around.

Well, there *is* an upside to all this. We can do away with the drug task force now that there's no more drugs to worry about, and we can let all that "DARE" bullshit go, too. What's the point if there are no drugs? Think of how much your tax bill is going to go down now!

Anybody who isn't for the immediate disbanding of any drug program or enforcement effort is saying in effect that these 2,000 people marched for nothing and that it did absolutely no good whatsoever, and surely nobody's saying that.

You have to believe in order to achieve, I hear. Sometimes you've gotta take that leap of faith. Since we've used our magic powers and wished meth out of the county, we have to conduct ourselves like our wish was granted. Otherwise God might do us like He did Moses and march us all over creation for forty years just to let us die in view of (but sadly outside) the Promised Land, because He's pissy like that...and don't be mad at me for what the Bible says, either. If you'd read the goddamn thing instead of beating on it, you'd know things like this, things like God was so pissy that He would let Moses see the Promised Land but did not allow him to enter. Go on, look it up, it's even in the King James Version.

I LOVE THIS--CARING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THINKING-OH HELL LOL, THAT SAYS IT ALL UP HERE.

I noted that when Graveside first relocated to 515, that you could call that place for any reason and get a very strained voice at the other end of the phone-it was easy for anyone with half a brain to notice that no one smiled at that place, no one seemed even remotely happy to be working there, they had gotton rid of faces that had been associated with Pickens General for many years of much better service than the current group were providing. This has somewhat improved but not totally-I agree, if you want to live go down the road- way down the road-past Kennestone too-that place has also gone to hell in the last 5 years or so-My mother was in ICU there back in 2002 and they were overloading her with fluid-they could not have been keeping proper I&O-she went from being a normal little petite size to looking like she had gained over 75 pounds in a matter of three days and when I questioned the obviously lazy black RN about why they were not giving lasix or something to take off the excess fluid-that bitch just laughed at me-well you lazy bitch, when she was transferred to Emory-a hosptial that I am sure you are too lazy and incompetent to work for-they immediately started lasix and she was losing 400 cc's of fluid per hour-in a short time her size was normal-but she had suffered ARDS and other complications from the fluid overload-I noted her respirations were becoming labored way before the fluid balance came into question. In other words they were slowly drowning her-I noted one plus edema in her ankles, then 2 plus, then 4 plus-there is no excuse for this and you folks better stick up for yourselves and your family-DONT BE AFRAID TO QUESTION THESE BASTARDS-if you are, you or your loved one might just die. You are employing them not the other way around. To all you around here who need an authority/adrenalin rush so you gravitate toward law inforcement, medicine and other things if you dont intend to do a good job-FUCK YOU, GET OUT OF IT.

If you are an ass dont volunteer, dont handle ice with your bare hands-FOOLS! You are taking everything you have touched directly to a person who is compromised already-GAWD DAMN PEOPLE, REALLY!!!

To the person who said their call button was not on the bed, if you could prove that, you would have any medical facilty by their ballz-even in longterm care and even if the patient does nothing but constantly press the button because they dont know any better-THAT CALL BUTTON IS REQUIRED BY THE STATE TO BE ON THAT BED AT ALL TIMES-so in your case, you did know how to use it and it was not in your reach-OH HELL!! YOU SHOULD HAVE HUNG THEM!!!! Did anyone hear them say they "FORGOT ABOUT YOU," because if they did, you could have owned our lil Graveside. If all this is just as you say then you should own it. You were lucky this time-please dont keep pushing your luck. I have never forgotton about a patient in my time as a nurse-I cannot believe they said that even if it were true. We are taught in school never admit to liability even if we know we are liable-such as if you are giving your first shot-dont walk into the patient's room and say, congratulations, I have never given a shot before and you are my very first one-this does not instill confidence in a medical professional-(KEYWORD)-Professional-who in the name of hell told you they forgot about you-what was their title-I am just curious to know?

From: Jeff
Email: jeff@jaspersucks.com

I guess what it comes down to is that everybody has to have their own private bad experience out there, because folks seem to fall into two camps: In the first, they think I'm over-reacting or making all this up for attention or to create Web traffic (as if I have advertisers to please or something); in the second, they've already had a horrible experience and I'm preaching to the choir and folks don't understand why something isn't done, etc.

People who have been in the area most all their lives know better than to fuck around out there, because those folks *will* kill you if they can. You can argue that it isn't intentional, that they don't *mean* to kill anybody, but even if it's through negligence you're just as dead. If your goal, like mine, is to survive, then it doesn't matter whether or not they kill you on purpose, does it?

As far as I know, I'm the only voice in the entire county-served media (radio, tv, internet) that has ever had the courage to face them. Everybody else is clamoring for their advertising dollars. Fortunately for me (and for you), I'm already rich and even if I weren't, my interests extend past this little pissant community at least to the extent that the likes of them will never be able to touch me. Until, of course, the day I wreck and they wheel me in up there unconscious, then the fun will begin in earnest and yes, they know they'll have to kill me while they've got the chance. There's no honor up there so I'm pretty much resigned to a slow, painful death if that happens. The bastards could at least make it quick, but that's not the style of such as them.

In other news, I've learned that I'm an intellectual coward and an all-around bastard by reading the messages over at the Pravda. One person in particular posted that they had to quit reading here because of the schizoid and stupid nature of the postings and the general sense of EEEE-vil that permeates the board, meaning (I think) that somehow I'm simultaneously an evil genius *and* a helpless idiot. It's been almost a year since I last looked at it, and at this point I don't know why they bother to keep the message board up. JS has been tiresome at times, but just *damn*.

As bad as JS has gotten in the past, you could at least follow it most of the time. I quit reading over there because I couldn't follow what was going on. In the beginning, I used to go and help them out by taking the other side of whatever was going on and playing devil's advocate or by tweaking the zealots, but it got harder and harder to generate a signal that could be heard through all the noise.

I *do* think it's funny that a sizeable part of the space has been taken up with the subject of what a bastard I am, though. I'll have to resolve to work harder to keep up with their expectations.

When I was a patient at Graveside this past year, I thought they'd left me in a back room to die. As I had a fever of 106+ already, I did not know much of what was going on for the first day or two. I do remember waking up and begging for water; later, I was told they "forgot" I was in this room that is reserved for President Carter as he has a cabin in the area and must local yahoo. I was grateful I had this great big room but what good did it do me? They FORGOT I was back there! And, the nurse call button was NOT attached to the bed - it wasn't even working! With such a fever, I craved water and needed it, too. On more than one occasion I witnessed the aide pushing the ice she finally brought, down into my water pitcher with HER BARE HAND. OMG. Then, upon discharge, even with a RED ALLERGY band on my wrist, the "house" MD prescribed the EXACT medication I was allergic to and listed on said ALLERGY band on my wrist! OMGx2! I refused the prescription. They just sent me home. Once home, I thought "Maybe I am supposed to be on an antibiotic so I don't get sick again". When I returned the next day to request to see the "house" MD or the physican under who's care I was, I was told by a VERY unfriendly "volunteer" that I could NOT see any of the MD's there - only if I was in the hospital. WTF? Who am I supposed to see ? It was due to the incompetency of my regular physican, that I was in the hospital to begin with. I finally demanded to see the head honcho (hospital administrator)and tried to tell him what happened. He sat there and looked at me as if I was making this stuff up; like I was exagerating or like I was just some local yahoo... WTF. Assholes. All of them. Northside at Cherokee is not any better - keep going south into the city if you want to have any chance of survival or good medical care.

I still shudder when I remember all this .....

They intend to own access to medical care in the area, that's true enough. If you don't get it through them, you're not going to get it if they can help it. They sure enough hate people like me who aren't on HMO's and have total autonomy. I'm not afraid of that bunch, though, and I always hated a bully regardless of how the bully comes packaged. They can jointly and severally kiss my ass. They may get a shot to settle the score with me one day, but I'll deal with that when it comes.

Jeff, Thanks for what you said-it is appreciated-I have noted that the powers that be at our hospital seem to want to get the local MD's by their balls if they have any-They seem to seek to tell these trained medical professionals how to treat their patients-if there is no need for medical uses of certain medications, then by all means just make sure they are taken off the market totally-I would just about rather die than go to Graveside ER and due to an experience I had there, I have told my family dont send me there under any circumstances-I asked about my own MD when I was admitted and told he would not be notified that I was an inpatient-He has been my family doctor of choice for over 7 or 8 years and is one of the doctors here they cant tell how to treat his patients, because he isnt in debt to them for his practice-he does have medical rights to practice at Graveside. The only thing they found out about me at Graveside was that I have episodes of uncontrolled hypertension and the inablity to sleep sometimes for days on end-they found and I am sure much to their surprise that I had no illegal drugs in my system period and not the Ice and other drugs they were so sure they would find.

I had the last laugh because I have been a nurse for 24 years and they couldnt screw me over like someone who is ignorant of the inner workings of a hospital-they gave me one medication, thinking it would knock me for a loop to which all I did was have an allergic reaction-I didnt know I was allergic to this medication because it had never been given to me in the past. Thankfully, when I told them I thought I was reacting to this medication, one nurse was smart enough to know I probably knew. I have been told in the past that I am a reverse reactor to medicines-therefore I tend to stick with the tried and true.

People here are becoming far to judgmental and are too quick to meddle in the affairs of others with minimal knowledge of the lives they are meddling in. I agree let the people who think they know everything have a few foster kids to raise. Some folks would do a good job but so many more wouldnt do much of anything.

I also want to say, I didnt ask the MD at Graveside for any medication-he smarted off and asked me if I wanted Demorol which is a controlled substance to which I said NOT NO, BUT HELL NO!!-I am allergic to that thank you and I know what that is because I am a nurse myself-his tone changed right then. I am not pointing fingers because I dont know that they are not leaning on that doctor to treat people that way-or they have dealt with so many druggies, its like I say-they believe everyone coming through there are seeking drugs. If you are addicted to Ice, for God sakes get help because even if you stop-your body will suffer the effects for many years to come-you may stop and think you are fine, then find out you have damaged your liver, pancreas, kidneys, heart, and many other vital organs-I have noted lots of people who have been addicted to Ice become diabetics at an early age.

Think this shit over folks!

I agree with you on the pneumonia, HCG. Somebody with 24 hours to live, auscultation via stethoscope wouldn't have been necessary. You could hear the rales across the room. Hell, you wouldn't even have to be a clinician for that matter, any eight year old could have told you something was dreadfully wrong.

I am genuinely sorry for your loss, and for the losses suffered by others at the hands of that awful place. I had hoped with time that economic pressures would force the Piedmont organization in Atlanta to get rid of at least most of the truly evil people on staff out there, and I'm told some of the worst *are* gone. It just takes one bad apple to sour the whole bunch again, though.

You should have seen some of the ugly stuff they emailed me back when I was really riding them via JS. The thing that stands out the most in my memory was the promise that should I ever be delivered out there via ambulance that I would be sorry I ever opened my mouth.

On the topic of fostering and orphaned children, I've got the perfect solution. We've got a lot of people and a lot of organizations, well-funded organizations, that exist to combat a woman's reproductive rights and return women to what they consider their proper subservient role in society, all barefoot and pregnant, etc.

Even Dave Thomas, the guy who founded the Wendy's hamburger chain, couldn't resist plastering his adopt-don't-abort message in subtle places inside company owned Wendy's outlets. My solution? Let's have the Census Department take a count of the people involved/registered with these anti-abortion organizations, take a count of the kids in foster care or other government-ward situations, do a simple division, and place these kids with these folks who care so much. This isn't an unfunded mandate, either: Let's dissolve the organizations and divide their resources on a kid-by-kid basis. There's no reason in the world to have an anti-abortion organization with $50 million USD in assets in a country where there's even one hungry or sick child.

Put up or shut up, I say. You can't stand to think somebody is about to abort an unwanted child, then *you* take the little motherfucker. Otherwise, learn to mind your own business. It's good for you, and good for the country in the long run, for each and every one of us to learn to shut the fuck up and mind our own business.

Oh, and if you've ever shouted "Whore" at a crying teenager outside an abortion clinic or participated in forcing underage children to watch abortion videos (it happens in Pickens County almost every day, folks) then you count as two people in the Census and you have to take twice as many kids. You've demonstrated that you can't responsibly handle free time, so it's important that you take enough kids in to raise to be certain you never see free time again.

From: Cyn
Email: given

maybe for each business that opens up in this 3 county area, they have to sponsor at least 10 foster children for 5 years each or they have to put up their business somewhere else... or 100 kids for 10 years if it's a big name brand store, like home depot...

There is a big problem here with meth but an even bigger one with ICE-I have seen people on ICE-I had two family members die due to it-and many, many more are still alive and doing it probably as I type-although I cant have much to do with them because if you dont do meth/ice you cant hardly stand to be around those who do because they will steal you blind-same with being an alkie unless you are drunk, you cant stand to be around your own kind for some reason-one concern I have about the kids of methheads is that guns are just strown about their homes and I fear Pickens High is just a ripe place for a school shooting-the parents are too high and paranoid to get rid of the guns, lock them up, or even notice if one or a few were gone. Face it, Pickens is a gun toting place-people hunt alot here just for sport. Plus, dont kid yourself, if you like meth/Ice your life probably sucks more than most peoples-I have a depression problem that I admit to but, I fail to see how that shit is gonna help me-in the end it would only contribute-If you are on meth and ice here, I would love to hear your reasons for getting hooked.

Most time churches are just a crew of well meaning or snooty (depending on the church) crew of idiots-they seek to change that which God almighty couldnt change-not to mention the people have to want to change or all the marches on the face of the Earth are useless, no matter how well intended-Either make it legal or make it really bad to be caught with, or shut up and live with it as a fact of life. I know its so bad here that Graveside automatically assumes you come through ER there, you are on Ice or seeking some kind of dope-If you dont realize you are like that Graveside workers, really watch yourself and examine your thoughts-I know lots of iceheads come in there for that very reason but that doesnt mean all do.

Even if a person is a drug addict you are not their judge, jury nor executioner-some church folks need reminded of vengenance is mine said God/its not yours, no matter how much you think it is. I have a cousin who went to Graveside-yes, she was an icehead among other things-but her death certificate says she died of pneumonia-double at that-she was at the ER one day prior to passing away-any MD wouldnt have even needed a stethoscope to hear a person in that shape breath.

Yet, they missed it-she also had fingernail marks in the roof of her mouth-someone taking anything of their own free will usually doesnt have that. Drug addicts and (I am the first to say I dont like them) but they are humans too and can be neglected healthwise or killed by their own kind or their own family members or both. Just because she had done dope then just let her die?

I wondered why her family wasnt raising more hell about things then I found out from someone outside the family that meth at one time was being cooked at her house. I also heard she was trying to kick her habits and run off the people from her home that did drugs-good reason for other iceheads to do you in?

If you ask me there is no answer but, Marching isnt worth two hoots in hell!

The town doesn't build the stores and restaurants listed below by the idiot. The stores and restaurants are paid for by the company itself. In fact they even pay cities and towns for the property, taxes go into the economy and people are employed where, again state and federal taxes are taken out of the checks. Just because you want to live like Jethro and screw your cousin doesn't mean the rest of the country does. Growth happens.Do you know why no one fosters??? Because people are fighting as is to make ends meet and to bring another mouth or two into the home is financially impossible. Sure the state pays the foster parents, but it doesn't even begin to cover the costs of taking in another child. Clothes, food, educational supplies, activities and so on. Stop putting the blame on the city for allowing businesses to open and start looking at facts.

Hey Jeff, doesn't it seem sorta coincidental that the "OMG THERE'S METH IN OUR WATER SUPPLY AND THE ONLY WAY TO PURGE IT IS TO PRAY TO JESUS" flyers went out and the churches started advertising the "dozen idiot march" at the same time?

It does to me.

To you Druggies;, undruggies, do-gooders, marchers and all the rest:

Drugs will always be available as long as there is money in it and there wil always be those who cannot control their urge to 'try' something different even though they know they will be hooked for life.

I know church folks sincerely think they should salvage everyone from whatever is bad, for any reason no matter how far gone the person nor how deep the pit. Look at all the lives wasted and wars fought that have been caused by religion since man has been around. The drug war is no different and there probably have already been more lives lost due to the untold, unending, religious wars than due to drug use.

The drug war will cease to exist when the money factor is no longer there and NOT before. The only weay to make the money factor dissappear is to leagalize the industry and let those who do not have the guts to stay away from what they already know is bad for them, waste themselves with no help from those who believe life is worth living drug-free. When this occurs we can all live better because all the wasted effort, tax money and tears put into futile programs to help those who do not want, nor deserve. help will stay in our pockets instead of being put in theirs.

My $2 worth for this week.

It would have been hilarious if at the end of that march somebody would have turned to his neighbor and said, "Whew! What a march! I know I've got a feeling of accomplishment....tell you what: Let's go burn one in celebration! Nothing says 'Mission Accomplished' like sticky buds, you know?"

yeah man, like I was doing meth and twisting a few joints together when I heard all these people were going to march and then man, I suddenly snapped out of it and quit using right then and there. If they could come back and like march to stop internet porn I could quit that as well, but I can't until some of them walk that fat off. What their doing is getting out here waddling their lard asses down the street so they can say they have done their part. Thats not going to do shit but get their asses off of the couch for as long as they can make it. Maybe we should go up and hand them gatorade every couple of hundred feet like the marathin runners get. They should have been walking to get Sanjia booted off of american idol, it do about as much good. excellent points made about meth. would love to form a discussion group with folks about the kids of meth users at some point. there must be something that can be done for them, they are innocent... but most folks i know here, including myself, have no money or room to do foster care... the city/county/state doesn't seem to either... they only have money for new banks & new drug stores & new gas stations & new restaurants & new home depots & new wallmarts & new wallgreens & whatever it costs to tear down mountains and destroy all the trees & take all the beauty from us so we can buy french fries & cheap clothes... how can anyone possibly find any money left over for the children? you'd think they would come first, but not to everyone. they are, after all, not cost effective, are they?

From: Jeff

Meth doesn't jump out of trees and mug people, people willingly put that shit in their system and I have no pity, nor should I or anybody else. There's no medicinal use for meth that can't be served by something else less dangerous, so it's not like a doctor somewhere gave it to you. Your own stupid ass did it. If you're hooked on meth, you have signed your own death warrant and you have nobody to blame but yourself. If you're strong, you will walk away. If you're weak, then you're dead, and good riddance.

I don't want to stop meth at all. In fact, I want the Federal government to start airlifting 55 gallon drums of it into the area for the fear that there won't be enough to thin out the goddamn idiots. If I had bugs, I'd set out bug poison. Meth is idiot poison. I know none of you are about to argue that we have a fucking idiot shortage around here. Meth is the answer to our prayers, from my point of view. If you want to start a faith-based initiative, go down on your knees and thank God for meth.

There is no appeal to Natural Law, and if you're too stupid to live, then you deserve to die. You deserve to lose your kids, your property, and eventually your life and nobody should feel the least bit shy about depriving you of any of the above because you should never have had any of it in the first place.

I get so irritated hearing people blame their aberrant/criminal behavior on one drug or another. Nobody would be addicted to anything if they weren't so cocky as to think they could play with something addictive and it wouldn't happen to them because they're "special". I'll even admit to feeling smugly satisfied when I see people who used to have money or influence but let it all slip through their fingers just because they were too stupid to leave meth alone. It's one of the few places where there's any justice anymore.

Any of you "marchers" who are reading and gnashing your teeth, go on and march. You could probably use the exercise. If you're an idiot (and the county is full of them), be sure to turn out for this in order that your neighbors might better identify you.

From: BuckingBronco
Email: Can'tSay

Hi, Jeff. I agree with you entirely about the drug marches that are to be held this Saturday. They're not going to solve anything.

I was appointed by my boss to serve on one of the committees. After an initial meeting, I chose to decline to participate because of the strong religious slant that is being placed on this crusade. I'm a spiritual person, but my spirituality is my own, not some instrument I use to influence others.

I find it ridiculous to give meth dealers and users and those involved in other types of drug use and distribution the "option to be redeemed through prayer" before going to jail and the "option for faith-based rehab."

Those were literally explanations given to us during that initial meeting. How can anyone even begin to buy into this when it's obvious that, even if Christ were standing right before the eyes of these meth users and dealers, meth is a much more powerful deity for them?

That said, some sort of solution or beginning to a solution does need to come into play in this county. The number of children and teens exposed to some sort of drug use (not necessarily taking themselves but at least witnessing) by family members, friends of family, and personal friends is unbelievable. I've heard the stories out of teens' mouths.

At the very least, young people need to be removed permanently from such situations. Beyond that, I don't know how anyone begins to rehabilitate the druggies. I certainly don't have any answers for the situation other than to protect kids the best we can from what is going on. If this crusade were not being influenced by Mt. Zion, Living Word, Jasper First Baptist, and other local churches, I'd jump right into the crusade on the front lines. I, however, don't believe organized religion is any more of an answer than I can come up with on my own. The war on drugs has been going on for fifty years in this country, and very little has been accomplished.

In order to win, the people who sell and do drugs will have to love themselves and their fellow man more than they love their habits and the money generated from them. For them, that's a road that is almost impossible to travel.

Infant mortality in Pickens County was very close to every fourth or fifth birth before the advent of effective drugs. Anyone who doesn't believe that is welcome to walk the old cemeteries and read the headstones. For anyone who's ever sat up with a sick kid, those little bitty graves with their lambs and flowers bring at minimum a sigh of relief that it's not you and your kid living in those times.

Sometimes, the most difficult thing about maintaining a website containing cutting edge, biting social commentary is that so much of the time the targets of your barbs are blissfully unaware that whatever they're doing is stupid, because they don't read. Anything. Not the paper, and absolutely not the Web because it could lead to dancing or something. They don't even read the Bible. If they'd ever bothered to do that, they'd have some serious questions indeed.

They're doing this "march" for the same reasons anybody does shit like this in town, that being to advance themselves in some way according to their own ranking system. Some just want to see themselves in the paper, some want to get known as organizers so they can advance politically in whatever groups they run with, etc.

I just saw something else that filled me with dread, along these same lines: Somebody you and I both went to school with has somehow acquired or leased the property at the end of a local gated community's main access road for his Resort for Teens or whatever it's called. I'm sure that the residents can't wait to have a bunch of goddamn hooligans (er, I mean, troubled teenagers) running wild down there, playing football in the middle of the goddamn road, and so on. There goes the neighborhood, in other words...

Wouldn't it be funny if somebody were to admit that the Joy in the "joyhouse" stands for the Joke's On You?

This whole Virginia Tech deal is just a stupid tragedy. These folks had no warning whatsoever and for what? Cause some selfish bastard couldn't get into a certain girl's pants? That, to me, is utterly outrageous.

We have all had those moments where we couldn't get what or who we wanted, but damn. Then they tried to say well, he wrote violent poetry and blah, blah. Hindsight's 20/20 there, kids. It saddens me that yes, everyone automatically looks for the disgruntled white boy. Never mind that it is 90% right.

If there is any lesson to be learned here, I remembering seeing this kid on Larry King who was another exchange student that was able to take a few shots of film with his cell phone. He said during the interview, "I left the Middle East because of problems like this and I NEVER thought it would happen here." WTF?!?

Please, all you parents and educators out there. Don't sit on your hands. If you discover your/a child has a problem, get them help. Don't sweep it under the rug. The next mass funeral you see on TV may be one you attend..

Well, that's my positive essay for the day. Now to go and have a heart to heart with my kids so they know I am there if they need me. I'm out..

I think "gook" is an offensive term to them, HCG. Not sure or anything, but I think it is. I usually say "Asian" because I am very bad at determining which branch such a person fits most of the time, so most of the time I play it safe with "Asian".

I've gotten to where I try not to go out into Jasper anymore, because I can almost always count on there being something out there that just *screams* stupid. Today, I blundered into the city limits and was greeted by several little roadside signs where somebody in some church has decided it would be good to put on a March Against Drugs. In order to do my part, I have christened it the Dozen Idiot March Against Drugs.

There was even a notice of this March inside the Chinese Restaurant, along with phone numbers. Now, Jasper has long been a place where you could raise a small crowd of well-meaning idiots just about any time you want and for any purpose you have in mind, and especially so if the Progress or the cable company was going to be there to put them in the paper or on TV, but this particular purpose struck me as particularly odd.

We've poured literally billions of dollars into the War on Drugs, and to no real effect, and it's because deep down inside people want to get high. I'm presuming with their Dozen Idiot March Against Drugs they mean illegal drugs, although they didn't say that, this bunch could just as well be organizing a march against penicillin for all I fucking know. Drugs, indeed: There's one hydrogen atom or so difference between cold medicine and methamphetamine, which tells me that it's the same thing when you get right down to it. We even admitted it recently when we let the Georgia Legislature force cold medicine behind lock and key, even though if I wanted to make meth and wanted cold medicine to make it with, there is nothing in the world stopping me from ordering a tractor trailer load of cold medicine. Just like always, the law hinders the honest people and the criminals are unaffected because they don't follow the law! There's a simple molecule involved here, and the only thing that changes it is human nature and the human desire to escape reality every now and again. Meth never jumped out of a tree and mugged somebody, every drop of meth on the planet was lovingly created by a human being because meth doesn't occur in nature.

We had a horrific failed experiment with alcohol prohibition in this country, and as usual we didn't learn a single fucking thing. We made alcohol legal again, but it's still a drug that people use to get high and/or alter their consciousness. People marched against alcohol, too, but alcohol didn't go anywhere and it isn't going to go anywhere.

But that's history, of course, I mean real documented history, not the four thousand year old campfire stories that pass for religion and there's some church or another involved with the Dozen Idiot March, which is your first clue that it's not going to have anything to do with reality. I have an idea: There should be a list of everybody who participates in this and each of them should put up a $1000.00 bond that they will never, ever for the rest of their lives have a drink or if they are hurt, they will never take anything for pain...because these are drugs, after all. If they're not willing to do this, then they're not very serious about drugs as I see it. I mean yeah, they'd still be idiots, but they'd be idiots with the courage of their convictions, regardless of how misguided...

Of course.

If you'll read the old messages, you'll see that you no longer have to worry about the Character Formerly Known as BB®.

JS is pretty dead right now, mostly because folks are spending their time reading about this Virginia Tech situation (or looking at porn). This thing really hit Americans hard. We're a society that wants so desperately to be safe, you see, but there is no such thing as that kind of security and it totally fucks with us to have our noses rubbed in it for some reason. I've got a whole different take on it than most folks because I found out about it nearly two days after the fact, I'd been in Las Vegas and totally cut off from bad news of any kind. I was eating huge steaks and looking at marginally clothed and very pretty girls twenty hours a day. Then this happens, and I sort of join the story already in progress, like when you miss part of a tv show and have to wonder what happened for most of it.

Penn and Teller said it best: Gun Control is Bullshit. How many folks would have died if more of them had been armed? A lot less, I'd imagine. Yet even on my campus here in Marietta (where I'm on staff), the first official things that were said about the situation were reaffirmations of the No Guns in a School Zone Law.

Nobody tells the criminals about these things, though. Criminals have trouble following laws, or something. I think that's why they're criminals. Anyway, between the senseless prohibition on firearms where we most need to have that sort of protection and good old fashioned racism, thirty two people got shot to death.

Racism?

That's right. How did somebody kill some folks, take a number of breaks (one of which was reportedly two hours long), take the time to assemble a Media Kit for NBC News, and then stroll out and kill some more folks? The authorities made some arrests during this period of time, most notably of people who reported bodies, they just didn't get the shooter. They didn't get the shooter because it never occured to them in a million years that an Asian person would do a thing like this. They could have seen him with the gun and would not have believed their own eyes, because everybody knows that when somebody goes nuts and opens fire, it's a white guy. After all, only white guys are gun nuts *and* able to be batshit crazy enough to do a thing like that.

This was the rationale that made it take so long to catch the DC Sniper: They had him on at least one occasion, if memory serves, and then let him go because their profile showed the sniper was a white guy. We choose to strip search white grandmothers in wheelchairs in airports to show that we're not racially profiling anybody, but we are. We're doing it to white people. It's still okay in this country to be racially prejudiced against white people, though, thank goodness. If it weren't, there'd be nobody that it was safe to mock.

We ran Don Imus off the air recently for saying "Nappy Headed Hos" (whatever that means) but newscasters say "White Trash" every day and nobody blinks. The folks who were the loudest about the Imus situation think it's perfectly fine and not prejudiced at all to hate a white person for the color of his skin. In fact, I've heard more than one of them say at different times that a black person can't even *be* prejudiced, it's impossible. Prejudice and bigotry are defined in the world of the Civil Rights Warlords as something that only happens to them.

Now, 32 people are dead because we spent all day looking for a White Devil with a gun.

I'm all for giving racism up, and if we don't and decide as a culture to stop making stupid generalizations, things like DC and Virginia Tech are going to happen again and again due to the inability of the authorities to move against the actual assailants. Let's stop being stupid about guns and allow folks with carry permits to actually carry their guns, and when somebody white, black, yellow, or green comes in to try to kill us, let's all draw down and return the favor.

I know there are a bunch of people right now who are wishing that was true. Death in a fiery solar furnace probably seems preferable to telling one's spouse and kids that we're going to go live with Grandma for a while because our house is, well, going away.

I can't remember a period of time in this country when the unsophisticated were so thoroughly fleeced from one end to the other. First, it was the 1998-2000 market crash where so many companies that folks tied up their life savings in were engaged in fraudulent bookeeping. That wiped out a *lot* of seniors, who were in markets they didn't understand because their brokers and their newspapers and television shows were trumpeting every day that they were fools not to get into Enron or WorldCom, etc. In fact, because of this, Grandma may be expecting to be able to come live with *you*.

Then, it was the "housing boom", a tempest in a teapot where the Federal government pumped $88 billion into the mortgage market to distract us from a half dozen things and inflated housing prices past all reality. Now, they're going to have to spend $120 billion or more to keep people in their homes.

I was out looking for something to eat the other day and as I was going to Taco Silvers I noticed gas lines three deep at that little service station in front of Kroger. I asked Jessica what the hell was going on, and she said if you've got a Kroger card you get some small pittance per gallon off your gas purchase.

Let's say in the average fillup, you get twenty gallons of gasoline. My napkin math suggests that even if they gave you twenty cents a gallon off the price, you just waited in line for thirty minutes for four dollars. For four more dollars, the four dollars that you drop in two ATM usages or out of your pocket in spare change every day, you could have gone 500 feet away and bought gas without waiting in line.

I did.

It could be that people really are that fucked financially, though. Oh, yes, there are always going to be folks who have money, but part of the deal seems to be that the rich keep doing intelligent things with money, and the poor keep doing stupid things. As a corollary, if time is money, how much do you waste in line for no good reason? What about the time off your life that you'll never get back?

I know a good many of you bought at the top of the real estate market, and some of you may come out on top yet because just as things were slow to take off here, the wave will still carry some even though it crashed on the Atlanta beach months ago. According to the Big Real Estate sign on I-75 South, the available houses number in the six figures now for the first time in my memory, and that doesn't include pending foreclosures. By and large, though, especially if any of you are sitting on ARMs or interest-only loans or any kind of "creative financing" and you don't have a clear plan to get out, it was nice knowing you. Even if there is another Federal bailout, it is unlikely to do anybody in Pickens County any good.

On the other hand, maybe Jack is right and all you have to worry about is global annihilation. Not being one to take any chances, if you need me, I'll be in Vegas for a while. Let me know when the asteroid misses us or whatever. If it hits, I guess I'll know.

Hey, not to change the primary subject of JS and not to worry y'all or the rest of the world but:::

There is a report out that a whistleblower, a credited scientific type named Henry Deacon has squealed that NOAA is now and has been tracking a binary star and it's influence on our own planet. This one, commonly called planet X, is part of a binary (two star) system. Our own sun is the other star in this ;binary system. This other sun with super long term elliptical orbit is predicted to do a 'flyby' pass into and/or around our solar system in the relatively near future since it is actually a natural part of our system. Word is NOAA is tracking and taking into account the effects this approach has on the worlds weather and other criteria as it gets closer and closer. There is apparently much difficulty in obtaining precise info on its forthing path and/or passby of our own system due to the long term orbit that exists.

Google 'Nibiru' or 'planet x' or 'binary star'

My two cents worth for today.

I'm not certain why they push young folks to get married so soon, unless it's a holdover from an earlier time when life expectancies were so different. We're living in a hodge-podge of traditions that no longer make any sense to follow (if they ever did) and almost nobody has the guts to stand up say "Let's stop the madness".

If you do, they try to ostracize you or treat you like a nut of some kind. This is the sheeplike nature of human beings shining through.

Both the culture and the laws need a good makeover to reflect the new realities we live in. At minimum, we need some sophistication. We've gotten so far down the political correctness road and so far into the Rights of the Weak and Stupid and Wouldn't It Be Nice if Life Was Fair that our culture and public discourse operate more or less like the politics of the high school of your choice. My idea is simply that it's time to consider being adults and showing a bit of adult sophistication. I was flipping channels the other day and landed on CNN, and this girl was talking about the Don Imus fiasco and her whole presentation was pure high school if not middle school. I swear she did everything but sing "Nana-na-naNA-naaaa!" Pure childishness. I weep for my country when I think of what pure fucking idiots live in it, and I weep more bitterly when I have to reflect that they're in charge due to sheer magnitude of numbers.

For you religious folks, I'll make a deal to include you in the New Adult Sophistication Makeover, and here's the deal: I will continue to support your right to believe and live your life according to whatever superstition or four thousand year old campfire story you like, if in return you'll support my right *not* to believe in invisible people in the sky or under the ground. Deal? Otherwise, I'm going to have to start telling folks that I was touched by the Holy Spirit...inappropriately. If you can believe you were touched by the Holy Spirit, so can I. Just give me the doll and I'll show you where.

Ever hear that gospel song "He Touched Me"? Puts a whole new spin on things, doesn't it? "Something...happened...and now I know", indeed.

Yep, "starter marriage." I like that one. I stayed in mine for a long time (12 years). Took me a few before I woke up and realized nothing was changing. My stubbornness, I suppose. And the fact my spouse kept trying to snow me every time I would threaten to leave. My kids are much happier and my new (well, not too new, we've been together for 6 years) significant other was worth waiting for. Just goes to show you anything is possible.

I am smart enough now to know just how lucky I am for my second chance at happiness. I don't think I would really understand it unless I HAD gone through the hell I did.

So now I'm off to give my darling a hug and a smile. I'm out... (don't worry, this mush won't last long)

No, no worries. I thought it was funny, that's all.

I thought Salem was taking over the 19th Hole up at Bent Tree...maybe he's doing both. I do wish him well, he was always good to us on the handful of times we went into the steakhouse. I always hated the steakhouse, but occasionally we'd be out with somebody who insisted on going there.

I haven't been to Birmingham in a good long while. The last time we went to Alabama for any length of time was back last August, we went to Huntsville for the Huntsville Hamfest. I enjoyed telling my kids the story of America's Own Nazi and the real history behind the area during World War II. They bought a bunch of crap at the Hamfest they didn't need like kids always do.

Jessica's got it okay. Ask her if you don't believe me. And for the record, I *did* do worse, this is my 2nd marriage.

I always tell young people getting married for the first time (especially when they bitch that somebody said they were too young) not to pay any attention to what people say, that age is only a number and (worst case scenario) it's always good to get that starter marriage over with early in life so you have time to recover. I spent way, way too long in my starter marriage.

I herewith apologize just like IMUS is doing to all those who couldn't take what he said good or bad.

By the way, I hear Salem Suber of Jasper Family Steakhouse fame is going to open up the Side Bar Cafe again. Wish him well, he's a good one.

Thanks for the private rundown on the backstory, and yes, I do want complete details. You can decide for yourself how much of it you want posted, but I usually draw the line at posting names.

I deleted my classmates profile as soon as I realized what that site was all about. People say the Catholic Church is evil, but that's only because they haven't taken the time to understand what classmates really is. That's *real* evil, right there.

The key to the problem of speakers in the front yard is an interesting one, I'll admit. I've got a similar problem with a local church, nobody who goes there lives nearby, but they blast some sort of simulated bell music at odd intervals from their rooftop-mounted speakers. It isn't clear who their intended audience is. I know it isn't me, I couldn't have made my disdain for organized religion any more plain. Maybe they think that if they blast Jesus on a Harpsicord in my direction long enough that I'll break down or something.

I'd rather the happy drunk accordion abuse that passes for Mexican music than "Jesus Loves You, Clang Your Bells", I think. I can't imagine that they'd take very kindly to my blasting some old 70's era Heavy Metal or the Extended Dance Mix of "Christ the Deceiver" during their services, but for some reason this noise pollution they create is just fine from their perspective. If they like it, it's music, if you like it, it's noise, I guess.

And to think these people are selling a heaven that has *them* in it...my requirements of Paradise are a little more exclusive, but to each his own.

I'm starting to doubt that your audience includes any members of the class of '87. If there are any out there, update your classmates profile, much as I hate to use that site it does appear that it is where the people go.

By the way, when I lived in Canton I had a Mexican national move in next door, seemed to be a nice enough guy but I knew I was in trouble when he started hanging speakers in the trees in the front yard...

But I sure as hell wouldn't condemn her. I may not have all the info on this one, but it seems a tad harsh to make her out to be so terrible. As to her internet usage, she could be using a friend's or the library. Don't be so quick to judge, folks.

I think on the basis of my Internet expenses, what with maintaining this Web site and all, I could qualify. After all, I'm doing this for y'all, so it's almost like you're all dependents, in a way.

Is there a website you can go to, or how does that work? Y'all have made me embarassed to admit I have no idea where food stamps come from, it's almost like having to admit you don't know where McDonald's is. Do you mean that sarcastically, or are you going to get one of those "Police Supporter" stickers?

Honestly, I almost never *see* a policeman. I always assume that's because they're undercover and keeping me safe from a distance, because I'm pretty safe.

Of course, if you really want to be safe in this county, having a reputation for being stark raving mad helps more than you can imagine. The only people I've had real trouble with were folks who were disconnected enough from local society that they had no one to tell them I was crazy, and they had to find it out the hard way. It's cool to have people talk to you real softly and slowly and to get way the hell out of your way if they see you coming down the street, too.

The place it helps almost as much as physical security is in local customer service. You should see them set the land speed record at the drug store to get me the hell out of there as fast as they possibly can, it's almost like they've got some kind of Orange Alert they go to when they see me come down the walkway.

What attitude? I haven't copped an attitude, I've let all of y'all ramble all you wished about these poor luckless sons of bitches. Some of you want to rip them from their homes and deport them, some of you seem to want them dead, and others are somewhere in between.

I disagree with you about the severity of what you see as "The Mexican Threat" but so far it's been a respectful difference of opinion. Or at least as much as it ever is. You see the End Times in this, and you're drawing a comparison between a murderer or other major criminal (people who choose to commit crimes) and a Mexican (who did not choose to be Mexican) and I'm not sure that makes sense. From the perspective of the Mexicans, we laid out the red carpet and invited them here, and they have a point, because our government did pretty much exactly that in terms of the services and incentives it provided to them. In 1993, for example, I personally witnessed the Cobb County Health Department providing prenatal care to illegal Mexican women who would go on to bear babies who were then American Citizens under the law by virtue of being born here, rendering the entire family undeportable. This was funded by the Federal government and happened all over the country. In other words, your tax dollars at work, but nobody said anything then. We were gearing up for an economic boom and needed the extra hands, so one more set of hands was just fine...in 1993.

On the disease/general nastiness angle, you forget I'm *from* Pickens County. I remember being a little kid and being herded out with everybody else into some room somewhere in the school so some adult could roughly dig through my hair with what felt like a steel bristle brush looking for lice, presumably because somebody there at the school had head lice. They did it to us all. There was no concept in the 1970's of consent, by the way, they just did with us whatever they pleased. My mother was uneducated and therefore afraid of the government in any form, she was happy on at least one occasion to *announce* to them that they could do what they pleased with me. My point is, there were no Mexicans there to blame for lice, in fact there was nobody but us. Does that mean because one of us, even one tenth of one percent of us, had lice back then that we should all be watched carefully and suspiciously, or even barred from traveling because we might carry lice?

Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. We've been here before in this country, at least twice that I know of, and one time it affected most of you indirectly because it was the Irish that everybody wanted to kill/deport and just a whole bunch of you are of Irish descent. The Irish came here and built all the Eastern railroads and originally created the City of New Orleans by building the levee system and bridges. When all the work was done and the economy slowed back down, it was "Kill the Irish". The Chinese had the same experience in the West, so that's twice. Hell, I'm forgetting the American Indians, aren't I? We gave them a fast ride across the country, one day we're having Thanksgiving dinner with them and the next they find themselves defending some islands off the coast of California...

White people, for whatever reason, cannot for a minute stand to have anybody around but other white people. In James Mooney's definitive work on the Cherokee Indians, he took his fellow whites to task for this attitude and all the suffering it had caused the Indians, and the previous sentence is a paraphrase of his statement. This is our history, and we've even perpetrated it upon other whites when it was convenient (or entertaining) to do so. It looks like we're going to do it to the Mexicans now. So much for our having finally put the past behind us. No, we're not alone in this, but others can sweep around their own doors. As a white man, I am entitled to ask the question why must we be this way, now, and throughout our history?

Things are slowing down and suddenly there's not as much for the Mexicans to do, so now they're just in the way and good old fashioned Southern Racism is rearing its head again. The government isn't going to do anything about them as long as they are making money for the government, so what are you going to do, start waiting for Macy's White Sale and wondering what thread count one can get by with when constructing a Grand Wizard costume? That's your next step, because you'll wait until the end of your life for something to happen on an official level. It's just not coming. They'll make noises about it, but it's not going to happen. It's too late even if they wanted to do something, and they don't. There are 41.3 million Hispanics in the United States as of 2004, and that's the ones they counted (Source: US Census Bureau). How are you going to move *millions*? If you do an informal survey at Wally World, you could come to the conclusion that there are more of them than us now.

I'm not copping an attitude about anything. I do expect these people to tell me (privately) who the hell they're talking about in the other posts, though.

If you can afford the internet you need to cancel that monthly payment to help support your children. Every little bit helps. No, Ricky, sorry. The guy who used to play BubbaBob® here on JS got all uppity and we had to let him go. We talked briefly about hiring a replacement BubbaBob® but the consensus seemed to be that so much damage had been done to the character that we needed to go in another direction. Unless there's some sort of miracle, you'll never see that character again.

It's no big deal, McDonald's did the same thing back in the 70's, they had a character named Mayor McCheese who almost always appeared on their commercials, but he got a nasty Coke habit (this was the 70's, remember) and McDonald's just dropped the character.

The bottom line is just as there's still a McDonald's, there's still a JS, and we've both served thousands and expect to continue to do so.

Happy Easter, Tink. I love Easter, too, it's the holiday that reminds us that Our Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins and that since we are mere mortals and have no right to question the Divine Plan, we are to commit sins. Lots of them. To do otherwise would be to render His Sacrifice meaningless, because He would have died in vain if there were no sins for His death to cover.

Fortunately, the Scripture reminds us that all have sinned and fall short of the Glory, so I think we're in good shape. The message, of course, is to examine your own life and be sure you have done your part. Blasphemy and adultery are my personal favorites, because they're easy and feel good, respectively, but everybody is different. There are as many sins as there are people, it's not as important which sins you pick as it is to be certain you pick one. Or more. The key is to be certain you do your share.

Right now, the sin of choice in Jasper seems to be to fail to love thy neighbor as thyself, because these people are hatin' on the Mexicans and I can't seem to move them off that point of view.

OMG when I read these posts from these women who are so insanely judgemental about the woman on food stamps, it is just really sad. She has already said that it is a temporary thing and last time I checked that IS what this program was designed for. For all those who think you are so much better than her, I hope when you get older you don't plan on receiving medicare because that is the same kind of thing. We all pay for that and most people, whether they need it or not, take advantage of it because it is set up for all americans when they need it. Some of you are so sad and you need to re-think your opinions I think. If you ever receive any assistance for anything ever in your life FOR ANYTHING you would do it to help your family. As the woman said she wouldn't wish that situation on anyone, but I think it is people like the ones that are so judgemental about it need something to shake their perfect reality to make them understand that help from someone doesn't mean that you are a bad person. Food stamps should never be something that people stay on long term and the system is flawed in that illegals can get it and people can stay on them long term, but this doesn't seem to be this woman's situation. So what is with all of the criticism? She seems to be using the help that is given to help get through a rough spot, why is that wrong? I personally have never had to use any sort of help like that and God willing I never will, but I would never be so judgemental of anyone in a bad situation because one thing I know for sure is judgement always comes back to the people who give it out. So shame on you for judging anyone! And hopefully being that self rightious won't come back to you.

No, I'm not Mexican, thanks for asking. There's a picture of me working, over there to the left, so we can mark that off the list, too.

Like I said before, the Mexicans can't compete with me. I will have been dead for many years before someone from Mexico will have had an opportunity to become qualified to do what I do and then have some reason to come here and do it. Mexican nationals who can do what I do never leave the country, because they can live like kings *and* stay at home and make fun of *their* illegal immigrants.

You're not seeing the professional class of Mexican, you're seeing folks who would have been farmer/peasants at best with no other prospects in Mexico. You're being too quick to judge an entire bunch based on a handful. It's the equivalent of going into a housing project or a trailer park and deciding that it's representative of the entire United States and everyone who lives in the USA. Well, okay, bad example, but the point I'm trying to make is that there are Mexican doctors and lawyers and accountants, etc., too. You're just not going to be seeing them because they've got it made at home. You're going to be seeing the poor son of a bitch to whom $5.15 is big money because he might have worked all week for the equivalent of that in Mexico.

Their presence, and the resultant driving down of unskilled labor costs, is making things possible that wouldn't have otherwise been possible. Many people live in houses that they couldn't have afforded to build before the Mexicans came and built it for nothing. Regardless of what people think, when Mexicans work at a chicken plant or carpet mill or anywhere that doesn't pay cash under the table, they are dinged for Social Security and as illegals, they'll never collect a dime of it. That's the real secret, I think, of why there's only nominal immigration enforcement, because the government is making so much money off them in several different ways.

To answer your assertion that to be a proper white man, I must hate Mexicans, I answer that on a personal level I have long been free of racism. I learned that you don't have to hate a man for the color of his skin or where he was born, because people are complex and if you want to hate him, give him ten minutes and he will give you a personal reason all your very own to hate him. When you learn this, and learn that all people everywhere are contemptible aside and separate from factors they can't control, you'll be a happier person. You won't have to feel like a racist when you learn that you can hate everybody just exactly the same and for good reason, like I do.

Jeff, common sense tells you that if you come to a country illegally and you are infected with some disease-you probably wont get help until you are almost dead-YES, Mexicans as well as the illegals from Central America do have diseases that we dont have or havent had for quiet sometime-If they get immunity for being illegal let them get tested and cured or whatever-I fail to see how you could think that people here illegally who dont obey basic traffic laws is a good thing for the USA?

To the person who commented on the car seat thing-ignorance dies hard up here-people are stupid assholes-never underestimate their stupidty. Biggest phucking thing that gripes my ass is if I have to obey the law-then they need to as well-whether ignorant redneck icehead or illegal hispanic.

If yall dont like Johnny-then get a decent candidate to run against him-make sure he isnt into things that can exploit him, because yall all know Johnny likes his job.

Melissa thank you for the kind words and support. It's nice to know that there are others out there that can understand my sitiuation. The system really sucks, my husband left when my baby was 3 weeks old (to have an affair with a close friend of mine) leaving me with two under-school aged childeren and one school aged child at home. He has been gone for over 5 months, and refusing to pay any bills, my house is now going into forcloser. My kids and I will be put out soon. (And I have no family anywhere close to Jasper to help with the children....so that is not an option) my husband is a local police officer and therefore knows how to work the system to his advantage. The daycare prices here far outway the cost of working in Jasper so I am kind of stuck for now with very few options other than to accept the help from the government for this short term transition period. I was offered a postion working night shifts however my husband did not want to help with the kids because it was going to interfere with his girlfriends schedule. And he is only working part time so that his income at the time of the divorce hearing will be as low as possible and I will only receive the lowest amount of child support required by law. But at least when the courts step in and make him support his children I will be able to afford for the kids to be taken care of by the best possible caretakers that I can find, and I will once again be able to work and provide them with a good life. I am so sorry that one person posting on here is so close minded that you can't possibly see yourself in a bad situation, and hopefully that will never happen because it is an incredibly humbling experience and I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

My comment on the lady with the 3 kids on food stamps. If you do not get enough food stamps to feed your children you need to get a J - O - B .... The world is full of single mothers. You are not the only one. Most work 2 and 3 jobs to feed their children. Stop feeling sorry for yourself because your husband left you. If you were the wife you should have been he would have never left you in the first place.

Welfare has been ruined by those who see it as a free ride. This deprioves those who really need it as a short or even long-term stopover gap and discourages those who would otherwise support welfare for its proper purpose.

Some on welfare buy more than I can afford at the grocery and drive better autos to go get the loot.

I once worked on a short term maintenance job (plywood plant) at an Indian reservation in the window rock area of Arizona where it was 110 degrees in the shade. Came back to Jasper and tried to collect rent from a new comer who had moved down from Tennessee. He wasn't going to work because it was "too hot to work". Our local agency saw fit to provide him with what he and his family needed except for paying rent. This showed me how easy it is for some to 'work' the system even if they have just arrived.

When welfare returns to its stigmatized form it will again be used by only those who have need, but that is not likely to happen with the welfare caretakers attitudes about who all should get the help besides those needy.

I also stopped contributing to the Red Cross for similar behavior of 'helping' those who don't really need it, but know how to get it.

My two cents worth for today.

I Was just reading the comments on the foodstamps . And Daycare it is hard to find someone you trust and who would take care of your children but I have 2 and 1 is in school but still it's hard for me to make it myself My husband left and hasnt paid child support in forever but we are doing whatever we can to make it which involves me working 2 sometime 3 jobs . Good luck to you and I hope things work out for the best for you and your kids .

To working woman, I am glad you feel that it is so easy for a single mother to work. I am happy you work so much, but I feel sorry for your children and the lack of quality time they are not recieving from you. After calling every add in the Pickens Progress the cheapest "Licensed" Day care costs 29.00 dollars a day. So if a person makes minimum wage working 40 hours a week ( 5 days ) and day care cost almost 150.00 a week, just how much does that leave for take home? Not much maybe 150.00 if you are lucky. Not very fair is it? I am the first person who believes people should work. I once lived on PB&J for 3 months because all my money went to bills rather than real food. I felt there were people out there who needed foodstamps more than I did, so I wasn't going to take them. I would love to go to work now, but again day care is just way to expensive, so my other half and I agreed that I would be a housewife ( yuck!!) but it is what is best for our family. I don't think I would be willing to miss out that much of my daughters life and than have to pay 150.00 to do so.

With two of my own, I'm sensitive to logistics. In other words, if a parent is truly alone (a rarity, frankly, around here but less a rarity in more urban settings) it may be hard to find someone to care for the kids when you're at work. The cost of child care may be more than unskilled labor can support, so I don't know what those people do if they don't have family willing to help with the burden.

I feel less sympathy for the parent than the kids, who we'll have to remember didn't ask for any of this and are powerless to do anything for themselves. In a lot of cases, the welfare is going to support the innocent, or at least that's the intent.

To the woman who was talking about food stamps . My question to you is if you have worked hard all your life and your husband did walk out on you then why aren't you working now ? I know that it is hard to support 3 childern i am doing that with 2 now myself but i hold down 2 jobs and when i can work part time i do so . SO my advice to you would be GET A JOB !!!

Seeing bloody, half-starved, and/or sick kids was most of what did me in with working in law enforcement. I had come home from the military and got hired over in Gordon County at their S.O. but it didn't last. I realize somebody has to do it, but it's going to be somebody else other than me.

Most everybody I know would cringe if they had to be a cop for a day and see the Third World conditions that some kids around here live in, and I don't mean responding to calls, I mean just in the day to day operations of being a cop, serving papers, etc. It's horrific, and nobody says anything because if they did they'd get the same response you got when you offered the car seat.

They'll curse you out for offering a car seat but they usually don't mind taking welfare, though, for some reason. I guess because it's more or less anonymous that way, but I dunno. People have the most fucked-up conception of pride sometimes...

From: Melissa Hendrix

Today driving down the road I saw a lady with a child standing in the backseat. I couldn't believe my eyes. When I pulled up next to her I politely asked her if she needed a carseat because I had an extra one she could have for free. Her response " Fuck you Bitch, mind your own business." I just shook my head at her lack of concern for this child. We continued on our way and not five minutes later she had an accident and I watched the child be tossed about in the car. I got out and ran up to the car, opened the back door and checked the child to make sure he was ok. The woman was bleeding from her nose. After calming the child down I began to walk away and the woman yelled " arn't you going to help me?" I turned around and told her " if you don't give a damn about your own child, why would you think society would give a damn about a woman who neglects a child?" I than sat in my car and waited for the police to show up. I gave my statement and drove away. I can't help but feel bad for not helping her but at that moment I was so angry that she didn't have this child in a car seat. The police told me the boy was only 2 years old. I beg people, if you can't afford a child seat, ask for one. Go to the thrift store, go to the police department, go beg for one on the street if you have to, but please please do not let a child ride in the car without one.

I think he got elected by something less than 200 people. I don't mean that was his margin, I mean that's how many voted, total. Not exactly a mandate.

He's willing to do a job I wouldn't do for any amount of money, and for whatever reason he seems to find it fulfilling, so that's that. If you are willing to do it, there are a whole lot of people who'd rather have you than him (regardless of who you are), so my advice would be to run for the office next election cycle.

Email: You dont need to know

As a citizen of Jasper I think the growning city needs to know the reason there is a lack of things that need to be done by the city and hasnt been done this far. As a result of the Mayor using funds for other personal gains to make himself look good to the citizens and VOTERS . From the parts of moments on main st that serves no purpose what so ever unless it is to stare at pissing rocks and a large marble dildo guess the mayor had something kinky on his mind huh ?

The local citizens are suffering because the safety of there well being is not up to date because the mayor has put his money in some nonsense bullshit other than putting the money where it needs to be used as far as into public safety . Because the Mayor using the fire dept to wash out the sewers and to wash main st what if there was to be a need for the fire dept and there were to busy using the water to wash the main st insted of saving it for the use of a house fire.

Or if you needed a police officer and he was to busy sitting at the funeral home and couldnt take a call because they were sitting there waiting to lead a funeral threw the city . To me there should be a closer look at the way the MAYOR is conducting himself and the use of alot of the citys funds before he is giving the right to do this over again . SO TELL ME JASPER SUCKS WHAT DO YOU THINK ??

For some reason, I'm thinking I actually was present for part of the Class of 1987's Tenth Reunion...didn't we have it in the middle of town, up at what used to be Xylona's art studio? Or was that a different class? And what was I doing there again?

You might consider having it down there, the Class of 1985 did their reunion in Bartow County, largely because of how many of us no longer lived in the area, I'm sure. I still do, but I think I was in the minority.

BTW I now live in Adairsville. Not so far away.

It's a crowd-pleaser, one of those things to which everybody has a similar reaction when it's brought out. We're all brought a little closer together.

You're not the first to have a delayed reaction to the ejection of the guy who used to play BB here. It's as if nobody thought I was serious. I know he didn't. The world over, kindness is taken for weakness, and because I didn't really want to have to throw anybody off and in fact had avoided it for five years, everybody assumed I was powerless to do so, I guess. He's gone, and he's not coming back. Feel free to break into an altered rendition of your favorite "Ding-Dong, the Witch is Dead" music.

Rotten.com bored me after a while, so I know what you mean. At this point, I'm not certain what I would react to, frankly. I'm good enough with photo manipulation to make anything I can imagine, and other folks are better than me and way, way more disturbed. Things that are real are more frightening to me, though, like these girls who really have carved themselves into Barbie dolls via plastic surgery.

But hey, I'm not here to be a spammer. You can take out the links if you want. I actually wanted to congratulate you on the BB thing. About time someone pulled his spotlight plug.

As for me, I'm off to warp more minds on this here internet. I'm out..

We never totally eradicated TB because of its ability to be carried undetected in a good portion of the population. If you're an autoimmune disorder patient, for example, for some protocols the first thing they want is a TB test to be certain you don't have TB before they suppress your immune system.

Anyone who became symptomatic received treatment, and that was that. TB is not a virus, it's caused by bacteria. Yes, bacteria mutate as well, but it's just as common for whites who abuse drugs or become immunosuppressed through active HIV infection to develop TB and begin to pass it on. Something like 1/3 of the Earth's population has been exposed to TB, so you can't pinpoint the Mexicans. They're not bad people, they're just caught up in the same cycle that the Irish-German immigrants were caught up in over a hundred years ago, and for them it was worse because it was okay to kill them. We're not killing Mexicans like the US killed the Irish-German immigrants in malarial holes and bridge and other contructions projects that the locals wouldn't or didn't want to do.

Yes, I feel sorry for the Mexicans. Take away all the politics, and they're the friendliest, funniest bunch of little fuckers on the planet. All they're really trying to do is feed and clothe their children. Most of us can relate. Bush, et al., have spent a lot of time telling them they're safe here and they can get rich here, so they come and end up being wage slaves in chicken plants and shit. Most of them will never get out. Who wouldn't feel sorry for somebody in that position?

From: HAIRY THE CABLE GAL
Email: MESSIN

Jeff, I have news for you Mexicans carry TB that we have had eradicated here for years and not only do they have that they have had none of the immunizations that most of us have had. Viruses mutate thats what they do-its not a matter of hating them but illegal ones have not been checked out for communicable diseases if they come here illegally-even our ancestors coming through Ellis Island had to have that done-so sorry phuck em they are illegal-we gotta look out for number one-fix them, check them out or send them home-We cant own a damn thing in Mexico ergo those here who dont have citizen status should not be able to own anything here either-you notice Mexico is alot harder to get back into than out of-whys that?? Could it be its sucks there and most illegals wont be trying to go back. Face it this is a cluster phuck and there has to be some order established to deal with it.

I think folks in your circumstance were the intended recipients of food stamps, folks whose circumstances went beyond their control, not folks who just couldn't fathom working for a living. You'd be amazed at how many of those we have around here. I was pissed off when they went to the credit cards for welfare, part of the argument was the credit cards helped to reduce the stigma. I was like, that's bullshit, each foodstamp should be the size of a poster and printed in Day-Glo colors.

The good news (for you) is that the government will help you screw ex-hubby to the wall via the child support recovery system. It will take time, but he will look like, well, the Goatse Man when they are done. Vengeance is yours.

I dont read this site regularly but i do find it interesting having said that i completly agree with people on food stamps abusing the system. I recently had to get food stamps. I have worked hard all my life and getting foodstamps was the most humbling experience. my husband recently walked out on me and our three children one of which was a new baby,he had asked me to quit my job because the daycare for the kids would be more than i was making so i quit a month before the baby was born and then acouple weeks after the baby was born he left and refuses to support the children so i had to get foodstamps to feed them what really sucks is the amount of foodstamps i recieve isnt even enough to feed them. it angers me that most of the people that get foodstamps dont need them but temporarily i need assistance and its an act of congress to get enough to feed my kids.
