This section will provide you with the specific technical information on a variety of different sizes and types boats including both commercially available and "one off" boats. In most cases it will include a description of the Batteries (number and type), Motor (h.p, and Voltage), Controller, prop and charging. Speed and range will also be included where ever possible. This should help you considerably with your own projects whether you are designing, building or buying. I recommend contacting sources for more information on the boats that approach the size weight and hull type of your own project. I've also added a table at the end of the page, for your convenience, which sumarizes the specs. and performance of a number of boats over a broad spectrum of size and type.
Electric Stowe 16 ft canoe
This boat is 3 ft wide and the hull weighs about 65 lbs. Powered by a Sears diehard 30 lb (about 1/2 h.p.) thrust outboard
with a 75 Ah 12 volt battery the speed was 3.6 knots for 1 1/2 hours. The same motor with a cut down model airplane
propeller yeilded a 4.2 knots speed
A 24 volt Minn-Kota 65 lb thrust (about 1 h.p.) motor was used in conjuction with two 75 Ah 12 volt batteries. The prop
was the standard prop which is about 11 inches in diameter with about a 3.5 pitch. The speed was 6.2 knots with a range of
about 2 hours at full speed (this combination is very efficient at half speed and should have a range of about 4-5 hours). Both
of the above power options are charged through battery removal. Click Here to Send Me Mail
Electric Bolger Gypsy 15 ft long. Homebuilt from plans
This boat is 4ft 4 inches wide and weighs about 150 lbs. Its powered by a Minnkota 65 lb thrust 24 volt outboard with energy
supplied by two 105 Ah batteries. There was no charging system at the time but this could easily be charged using two small
solar panels (about 20 amp each). The propeller was standard (about 11X3.5). The speed and range was 6.2 knots
(measured by a knotstick) for about 3 hours.Click Here to Send Me Mail

Replica roadsters builds this 14 ft boat and claims it will do 50 mpg. The boat carries 2-4 passengers and has a 6'8" beam
employs a jet drive, and uses a joystick for steering. The boat has no batteries (except for starting I assume), but instead relies
on the continuous operation of the generator at a constant speed. Consequently, it is reported to use about half the fuel of a
conventional gas powered boat. The generator produces about 100 hp at 2000 rpm/ 480 volts and supplies current to AC
permanent magnet motors. The selling price is said to be less than $20,000.Replica Roadsters, Torrance, CA
Solifleur -15 km (about 49 ft) long passenger carrying boat
This may be the first passenger carrying boat which is powered exclussively (more or less) by solar power. The glassbottom
boat is fiberglass powered by a 24 volt lynch motor through a saildrive and is used on the Lake of Neuchatel in Switzerland.
The 24 volt battery supply is rated at 460 Ah. The boat can achieve speeds of 5.4 kts (or up to 2.7 knots by direct solar
power. The 500 watt solar array consists of 8 flexible monocrystalline modules mounted on the canvas canopy cover. The
boat produces more energy than it uses which is tapped into a main connection when the boat is at rest and hauled on a "rail
slip". This is from an article available on the UK Electric boating association site. The article was originally written by Theodor

One 33 watt solar panel (with a charge controller) is employed and is said to provide about 40% of the required energy. The maximum speed is said to be 6 mph. The boat is by Spincraft Electric Boats Ltd.,108-2595 Blackwell St., Ottawa, ON Canada K1B 4E4. The Solar Conversion was by Darryl McMahon of ON, Canada
Global Greencat Solar/Electric Powered Catamaran
This boat is expected to circumnavigate starting sometime early in 1997. The boat is built of plywood with epoxy saturation
technique and measures 45 ft long, 23 ft. beam, 2ft. 2inch draft. The boat weights 1000 Kg bare and 2500 kg loaded. There
will be up to 58 sq. M of solar panels with an outputs of over 6000 watts. There will be 24-28 75 amp/hour gel batteries.
There will be two outboard electric motors generating 120 lbs cruising thrust. An additional two motors will be used for
back-up and emergency thrust of up to 240 lbs. The cruising speed is expected to be 5-7 knots. Cruising speed in clouds is
expected to be 3 to 5 knots. Maximum speed is expected to be about 10 knots. Contact this group at

Solar Electric Driven Excursion Vessel Project
This is a joint project between the Delft University of Technology Netherlands) and industry to build a large excursion vessel
for the Nature Society of Friesland. Presently the site contains a photo artists rendering of the proposed boat and the results
of testing to verify the electrical system design. A web serch list of solar electric boats is also provided

The Solar Electric Passenger Boat
Solar Electric Skiff (15 foot) (Plans Available)
This boat is about 4 foot 6 inches wide and weights about 200 lbs. Its powered by a 24 volt 65 lb thrust Minn-Kota outboard
installed on either the transom or in an optional motor well. Two 105 Ah 12 volt batteries provide power and are charged by
two 20 watt solar panels. Either two charge controllers or two on/off switches are installed between the solar panels and the
batteries. The standard Minnkota Propeller is used.Click Here to Send Me Mail
V-N-Verse II. This University of Michigan, first place winner in the Solar splash sprint competition acheived +30 mph under the rules of this contest. The boat is 11 ft long, 3 ft wide and weights 450 lb including a 150 lb driver. The boat is propelled by two 4 hp motors driving surface piercing propellers. Three 12 volt batteries are used and solar panels are employed during the endurance/solar race. The construction is inverse V. Basically it's a W shaped bottom forming catamaran type hulls.
Incat039 - Competitor in 1996 Advanced Technology Boat Race, Canberra, Australia
This boat is a catamaran of bout 6 X 2 1/2 meters with a solar array of about the same size raised off the deck and capable of
pivoting. The boat was powered by swiss made outboards. Incat was able to achieve 3 and 4 knots on solar panel alone in
heavy cloud cover. The boat can achieve 8 knots on a sunny day while still charging the batteries somewhat. The top speed
demonstrated in this race was reported to be 12 knots (the boat was driven at a low current, consequently, it was capable of
higher speeds). The solar panel consisted of 3 X 140 V 3.3A strings totalling 1368 solar cells capable of a maximum solar
output of 2.2 kw.
Spirit of Icarus - Won the prize last year for the most innovative entry in the International Advanced technology Boat Race held in Canberra Australlia. This boat is an 8 meter long (about 26 ft) monohull lifeboat powered by a 1.12 KW motor. Ebergy is supplied by Ten 6 volt batteries which are charged by four solar panels on fiberglass wings which can be adjusted to face the sun at optimum angles. The boat has reached speeds up to 6 knots
Hydroplane Racing boats 144 volt. These have 12 automotive type batteries. Draw up to 800 amps and use 36 to 48 volt ratedindustrial DC or aircraft starter motors. They produce up to about 155 hp, and accelerate to about 70 mph in 300 ft. They have a range up to 3 miles per charge.
Hydroplane Racing Boats 48 volts. They use 4 batteries ant motors rated for 12 to 30 volts. They produce about 20 hp.
