The Lovely Smokey Smokey's Story

Karen and I found a 3 year old sheltie female trapped in a concrete drainage culvert about a mile from our house. She was muddy, hungry, and very frightened. The walls of the ditch were too steep and slippery for her to climb. She had probably been there for four days, only a few blocks from her home.

How did we find this little girl? Two days before we found her, the director of Dallas Sheltie Rescue e-mailed me that a sheltie had been lost in my area. She told me the location, the owner's phone number, and gave a description of the dog. She said the family was very distraught and losing hope that they would find Smokey. So we changed our morning routine and started taking our walks in the area where Smokey was lost, just in case we got lucky and spotted her. We got lucky.

I spotted Smokey out of the corner of my eye while we were walking over a bridge on the way home. Karen ran our two dogs home, and I tried to comfort Smokey. I couldn't get within 20 feet of her. While I trapped myself down in the culvert, Karen called Smokey's owner, Sue, who arrived within 10 minutes. I will never forget the look on Sue's face when she arrived to help get Smokey out of the culvert. It was a very emotional reunion!

Smokey is home now and checked out fine with the vet. We were so glad that she wasn't still in that ditch when the storms rolled in that night. Without that e-mail, we never would have walked that area. We never would have looked in that ditch. Maybe no one would have. Thanks D/FW Sheltie Rescue.
