Excellence in college radio rests upon two pillars: creativity of music and creativity of presentation. A station may be totally devoted to the former, i.e. great music but horrible presentation, or the latter, i.e. lousy music but brilliant DJing, but I consider both to be failures. For a station devoted only to creativity in music will keep only the most die-hard of music fans but will garner barely any new listeners and maintain only a perilously small listener base while constantly alienating the student body. Likewise, a station devoted only to great DJing but without any creative taste in music may entertain many people, but will ultimately teach them nothing and in consequence adds nothing to the culture. Only by integrating both creativity in music and presentation does true excellence in college radio arise.
