South Carolina Upstate Dart League

The South Carolina Upstate Dart League, S.C.U.D.L. for short, is a non-profit organization, who is a member of the American Dart Organization (ADO), that promotes the sport of darts and sponsors a three-day tournament, The Foothills Fling, whose proceeds go to charity. The main charity sponsored by the league it Prevent Child Abuse Carolina. We have been fortunate enough to have great turnouts for this annual event and have been able to make very sizeable donations as a result.

S.C.U.D.L. match play is held on Tuesday nights, and there are two seasons per year. Each team that signs up to play is given a team rating based upon an average of the players' ratings. This is used to determine what division that the team will play in for the season. Depending upon the number of teams signed up; there are usually four or five divisions each with five to eight teams per division. At the end of the season, the top two or three teams per division participate in a playoff to determine an overall winner for the league.

The S.C.U.D.L. is lead by a Board of Directors that is elected in the spring season of each year. There are seven positions on the Board: President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, Scorekeeper, Rules and Grievance Chair, Publications Chair, and Special Events Chair. We also have an elected ADO representative that is elected at the same time.

The league newsletter, "The Ins and Outs" ©, is published about four times a season, corresponding with league membership meetings. The newsletter is published and mailed about 10 days after each meeting. I currently hold the position of chair of the newsletter publishing, and have done so since Fall 1991 or Spring 1992. I have be doing this for so long that I really can't remember when I started in the position.

Currently, our active membership is less than 150 players, although when I started publishing the newsletter we numbered a little over 200 active members. Our members come from all walks of life. There are people from the medical profession, construction industry, computer industry, legal profession, service industry, and also the education industry. All come out to have an enjoyable evening of competition.
