Earl S. Paulson was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 24,
1905. He attended Tilden High
School, studied in the school at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early
1920’s, and spent most of the next 50 years working in the commercial art
business. He earned a living at various Chicago area companies, notably
the General Outdoor Advertising Co., as a commercial artist and then art
director. During the same time, at home, he produced a substantial
quantity of paintings and wood carvings solely for the enjoyment of his family
– some 200 or more works that are known.
Why did he devote his life to creating beautiful works that only his family would see? Art was not just a job or career or means to earn a living. For him it was also a great source of personal satisfaction and pleasure. The fact is, he loved art and doubtless could not conceive of doing anything else in life. As an artist and as a gentle person he was able to see and appreciate beauty and form in things and in nature that were hidden from the eyes of other people.
