Obsessions are a funny thing. I used to think that golfers who were out playing regardless of the weather conditions were all out of their minds. Then I got a mountain bike. Now I understand. You see, I believe that you must keep the joy factor (amount of joy/time) as high as is possible in life. This is what my bike gives to me. It's not about the exercise, although it is a great workout. It's not about the technology, although I could talk for hours about the newest suspension fork or disc brake to come down the line. It's not about being outdoors, although that plays a part. It's not even just about riding a bike, road riding is just a workout to me. It's the combination of all of these things that makes the ride exponentially better than any of these things alone. Sweet singletrack, rocky technical stuff, big jumps, fast downhills, night rides, snow rides, snow night rides, joy, joy, joy! So yes, I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed with joy.
