If you can get past their yucky name, this Canadian group will delight you. They’re most often compared to the Shins or Arcade Fire, but connoisseurs of 20th Century rock will hear echoes of the Who and David Bowie. With two female leads and another male lead vocalist, they find intriguing ways to combine voice and instrumentation; while their sound is distinctive, the songs are varied enough, both in rhythm and melody, to keep this album out of a listening rut. In particular, Stacked Crooked, Falling Through Your Clothes, and The Bleeding Heart Show are gorgeous counterpoint to the more jangly sound of Twin Cinema and Jackie, Dressed In Cobras. And even their slow songs are rousing—perfect for an energetic, brisk wog.
