Maybe Jimi Hendrix didn’t like it, but for a while Surf music ruled the nation’s air, er, waves. Like the Beach Boys, many of these groups pounded out basic rock’n’roll with a backbeat, Chuck Berry-style, but I’ve included a few more unique numbers here, including the notorious Surfin’ Bird and the Surf Punks’ hilarious attempt at Disco. There’s also some great instrumental pieces, both by artists well-known (the Ventures, the Chantays) and not-so-well-known (the Lively Ones, the Atlantics). This set is rich in both Two-Timing and Skiplekability, so you can carve out your pace the way you like. Cowabunga!
