Looking into the dark side of the American soul—even celebrating it—is a constant concern of the more thoughtful contemporary songwriter. All of these numbers dip into that at times intoxicating mix of dread, celebration, and dismay. These aren’t the blues, but they borrow from the blues the same urgency over the human condition. The intensity of it makes for a very involved Wog-a-Thon in two parts.
