Generation No. 1

B1. BENJAMIN3 FLEMING (David2, John1) was born March 12, 1777 in Pitt County, North Carolina; died before December 16, 1817, the date on which his widow received dower of 80 and one-third acres (“Benjamin Flemming, dec’d, to Susanna Flemming, widow” –– Pitt County Deed Book AA, p. 242).  Benjamin married Susannah (or Susanna) MooreThe Chronicles of Pitt County, North Carolina, published in 1982 by the Pitt County Historical Society, Greenville, North Carolina, p. 306, states that he and Susannah had “ten children;” five are named below.

At the age of 21, in 1798, Benjamin Fleming purchased 50 acres of land for 50 shillings from the Captain General, Governor of the State of North Carolina.  On August 4, 1803 – Pitt County Deed Book P, p. 432 – David Fleming, his father, deeded to Benjamin, “his beloved son with love and affection,” 50 additional acres of land adjoining the purchase made in 1798.  This deed was witnessed by John Fleming, Sarah Fleming (perhaps a daughter of Eliner Patton and the wife of John Fleming, Sr.?) and Mary Fleming (perhaps sister of David Fleming and daughter of John Fleming, Sr.?).

On December 3, 1823, Pitt County Deed Book CC, p. 337, an account of the settlement of Benjamin’s estate is given, with land divided among five sons:
