Dearest Clare and Walter:
We certainly enjoyed talking with you the other night and it was wonderful to hear the baby. You will never know how happy we were to hear of his arrival. Dad went out telling all the neighbors he was grandpa. He was so thrilled. I am glad you named him Joseph Thomas. He will have Pops and your dads initials and mothers name, too. I think Joe is short and a cute name.
When I came in this afternoon, Dad had painted the little bed a pretty shade of blue. He told me to write you Joes bed is ready any time you can come ...
Kiss that little fellow for us. We can hardly wait to see him and his Mama and Dad.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
FANATICS THINK CRITICALLY
am 17 years old and will be a senior at Lakeland Christian School this year. A recent morning I read a letter from a man who bashed religious fanatics who condemn the idea of gays having a parade next year.
He said that religious fanatics in the United States fail to think scientifically or critically. This man supported homosexuals by saying that they are not contributing to the overpopulation of our world today. He said we should be supporting them in raising consciousness politically of the need for dealing with a growing world population.
I am one of those religious fanatics, and I attended a conference for the last two weeks where I learned many things about our world today, including this overpopulation problem.
In The World & I, (v.8, no. 6, 1993): pages 374-75, Sheldon Richman says, To put the matter in perspective, if the worlds 5.4 billion people were put in Jacksonville, each person would have four square feet to stand in. In Texas each person would have at least 1,400 square feet, the area of a good-sized two bedroom apartment. (How is that for scientific, critical thinking?)
In addition, I watched a video at this conference on the homosexual revolution. On it were pictures of these gay parades this man is supporting. The parades are graphic and disgusting. How would you explain it to a small child who happened upon such a parade and said, Mommy, why are those two men kissing?
At a time when our Congress is voting on whether homosexual marriages should be legalized, I do not think that it is the religious fanatics who need to wake up, I think everyone else should.

Biographical Notes on Hugh Jeff Lanier
Probably the same as H. Jeff Lanier, former Director of the Elections Division, Secretary of States office named in the story below from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia, Monday, December 2, 1996, Gwinnett EXTRA, p. J-2:
ELECTIONS OFFICIAL ENDS RESPECTABLE TENURE
By Elliott Brack
Gwinnett resident Jeff Lanier, who has been the chief of the Elections Division of the Georgia Secretary of States Office for the past eight years, is leaving that position on Dec. 31, after 17½ years in state government. Now hes pondering his future.
Laniers resignation came after newly-elected Secretary of State Lewis Massey sought changes in several key positions under his office.
Lanier, who has been an assistant district attorney and in the attorney generals office over the years, has been recognized as the guy who modernized the Elections Division. This went well past election returns.
Now we keep the entire state voters list on our computers. We also connect via e-mail to every voter registrar in the state.
Jeff Lanier remembers his first election in office, back in 1990.
The next morning we went out and bought newspapers to see who won. We had no idea. Back then the elections returns did not come in to us for several days.
How different it was this year.
Were into the final steps of our election night reporting system. We wanted a start-to-finish election process. We want to show what elective offices are open each election, who are the incumbents, roll that into the campaign and disclosure section and who qualifies for office, even print the ballots, get returns, then certify the elections, figure who goes to the runoff and who goes directly to the general elections.
Then get returns of each election and certify it and generate the relevant documents to swear the winners into office, give commissions, generate what is needed for bonds.
And ... continue to update voter register list. And all in one system seamless, you might say.
Thats a big order.
Were about 80 percent there now, Lanier says. For instance, when I went home at 2-3 a.m. on election night, we had complete results from more than 92 percent of the 2,700 precincts. Weve had tremendous success! We anticipate certifying the 1998 elections electronically.
Lanier has been chairman of the Independent Testing Authority for the National Association of State Election Directors. Essentially the group works with approving new types of voting machines.
Jeff Lanier takes the voting process seriously. We try to make the elections as perfect as we can. But as long as human beings are involved, all we can say is that we promise its a fair election. What we find is that if questions arise about the process, its usually just people making simple mistakes.
Hes pleased with his tenure in the Elections Division. I know this sounds hokey, but all these eight years Ive had satisfaction when I went home each night that we had done something good for the state that day.
Thanks, Jeff Lanier, for your leadership in helping make the voting process better for all Georgians. Were gonna miss you at the Elections Division.
