Dillon’s Average Jones page

Hi, I’m Dillon, and welcome to my Average Jones shrine. Who is Average Jones? you might ask, well, he’s one of my animated cartoon characters who looks like he’s from the twenties (because he’s supposed to be!) who can be mischievous and ends up in all these crazy adventures (like doing his crazy household routines like his way of getting the laundry done by being thrown into a storm on an island full of cannibals), and he gets his woman, or his money or whatever comes to make sense in the story.

Average Jones

History

I have been drawing versions of Jones on paper ever since I was 9 years old. Another character I drew was Catadotha, which was short-lived because “it’s been done.” Speaking of Cats, the Average Jones cartoons are meant to depict the style of the “Felix the Cat” cartoons, Felix was a popular 1920’s cartoon character that is still appearing today. I sort of started animating him in my first project with Animation Shop Pro when I was 11, but it was a failure. I didn’t know much about how to animate anything, so it took me a year (I had bigger fish to fry at the time as well) to learn how to animate, and my first film, which I created in two weeks during the summer of 2004 was “Jone’s Punctured Romance”. In “Punctured Romance,” Jones sees his girlfriend, but she ends up being “girlnapped” by a villain character, and Jones has to save her. Not much of a plot, but it was very funny.  Here are a few screenshots to give you an idea, and you can now see the full animation by clicking on this link AVERAGE JONES-JONE'S PUNCTURED ROMANCE.

UH OH!                                                                 SHE’S GONE!

In October, the days were getting colder, and so was the political climate around my neighborhood, as the election was coming up, and I decided to stop thinking about poly-tics and make “Jones the Magnificent.” The animation in “Punctured Romance” was effective, but very crude, a lot of things were not smoothly animated and as you might notice from the shots, the body parts are a bit out of proportion. “Jones the Magnificent” goes as follows, Jones puts on a magic act, but everything goes wrong, there’s even a tragedy in the last trick!  Click on this link to see JONES THE MAGNIFICENT.

Here’s the ol’ hat trick…                                       …and now the other one!

After finishing that, the computer deleted my files! Doh! So, it took a few months to remake them (the remakes are the ones on display on this page). I also spent time making the stop motion series Dillon and Upton (which I may feature on another page eventually). After all that remaking, I made “West of East” in which Average Jones arrives in the good ol’ west only to get robbed by the most wanted woman and have a gunfight with the most wanted man. Click on this link to see WEST OF EAST.

Why hello there, beautiful lady…                          …beautiful lady robber that is!

After making that, I made a cartoon called “The Awful Tooth” but was discontinued in January because of creative reasons. Instead I made “Choose Your Husbands” where Average Jones and his rival fight over a girl, everything starts out slow but boils to a shocking climax! Click on this link to see CHOOSE YOUR HUSBANDS.

The future

Up next in the series is Jones’ Sweepstakes Ticket where Jones actually becomes lucky and has a winning number but loses the ticket and chases after it. As well as making this, I am colorizing various 1920s-1930s cartoons.
