Each of our programs is designed to be educational as well as entertaining. The works we choose for a concert are always related to each other in some way. Our programs may tell a story, explore a single theme in a variety of musical forms, or illustrate the characteristics of a particular composer, period, or type of music. We enjoy sharing with you what we have learned about the poets and composers whose works we perform, the times and places in which they lived, and the various forms and styles in which they created these works of art for the human voice.
Just Voices regularly presents concerts at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 515 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, 4 blocks east of the old courthouse in Decatur. For directions, click here. Admission to most of our performances is free. Donations are welcome and help to keep us singing! Woodruff Arts
Center As part of an all-day series of free performances at Woodruff Arts Center, Just Voices will present a demonstration concert at 11:00 a.m. This program will be of interest to music lovers of all ages, from elementary students to seniors. We will illustrate musical techniques such as repetition and word-painting, harmony and dissonance, tempo, volume, and styles of expression in creating a musical work of art. Christmas Concert This program of Advent and Marian carols and anthems will feature Craig Courtney’s setting of “Herself a Rose,” Christina Rossetti’s lovely poem about the Virgin Mary; the “Magnificat from the Vespers of St. Joseph” by the Afro-Brazilian composer Jose Mauricio Nunes Garcia (1767-1830); and a wildly exuberant Mark Hayes setting of the traditional carol “Masters in this Hall” that will showcase the keyboard talents of our accompanist Thomas Eisnor. Christmas Concert Christmas Concert (donations gratefully received) Spring Concert Our Spring Program will feature settings of texts which paint musical pictures of landscapes and people. Selections will include 20th century and contemporary works of Vaughan Williams, David Foltz, and Eric Balsa, and the work of poets such as Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, and Shakespeare. Midtown Community
Choral Festival For our final performance of the season, Just Voices will join the Atlanta Festival Singers, the Grady High School Choir, Northside Young Singers, and Northside Festival Singers in a joint concert. |
