Kadron is a fictitious character I played in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. He is a wood elf, Master Thief. Wood elves tend to stay with their own, but Kadron's village was attacked and destroyed. Only he and his brother Zyr survived the attack. Thus began the adventuring life. This was difficult for him, not due to the lack of skills, but rather the fact that wood elves are very distrustful of others who are not of their race. Also hindering the process was the fear of not being in the forests or any other wide open area. Kadron was scared and got physically ill when entering any buildings, tunnels, caves, carriages, etc. It took a very long time to almost get used to it. Kadron has visited many cities and towns in his time, many of them human settlements. Although these tight areas still made him sick most of the time, he found the space he needed by staying of the rooftops, with the open sky above him.

He has had many interactions with others of various races. Some of his early traveling companions were dwarves. Toward the middle of his career, he joined a band of moon elves called the Moons of Faerun and stayed with them until just recently.

Kadron has since settled down with his wife, Elsbeth, and they are living off of the land and the fortune Kadron has accumulated over his lifetime.

The Beginning, with Zyr

When he was a child, Kadron loved fishing and just playing around in the forest with his brother Zyr. Kadron was older then Zyr and also had a different set of friends. These other elves taught him how to sneak around quietly, hide effectively and remove items from others without them knowing it. Kadron had much fun doing this. When they were slightly older, their parents brought them to the Elders of the village. One of the Elders was a mage who cast a series of spells on the 2 brothers, then proceeded to ask them a series of questions. They determined that Kadron was to train with the warriors of the village. He was soon to be at the age where he has a duty to protect the village. It would seem that Zyr had the makings of a mage of some kind. He immediately began schooling.

After about a year, Kadron and Zyr were told that Zyr had to finish his schooling elsewhere because the mage who was teaching him was called off on other, more pressing business. Before this mage left he set up Zyr with another mage, one who runs a school in a city. They would have to pay for the rest of the training. Kadron was given money, by his parents, to hold while they traveled. After about a 3 day journey, they arrived in their first city. The walls were very imposing. They were welcomed by the city guards and quickly made their way to the mage's tower, both of them feeling a bit ill. They talked to an administrator there, who, upon seeing them a bit queasy, decided to talk to them in the gardens. It was here the brothers found out that their parents did not give them enough funds to pay for the schooling. They were 200 gold pieces short and classes began in 2 days. There was not enough time to go back home and get the money and the institution wouldn't accept Zyr without the full payment.

They decided to make a small camp in the forest just outside the city, for they both knew that they would not be able to rest indoors, and they had to conserve any extra money they had, in case it had to go toward the fees for the school. While Zyr was safe nestled in a tree and in reverie, Kadron made his way back to the city. He climbed over the wall and found his way to the night life area of the city. We waited in the shadows until many drunk humans were about. He made his way sneaking up on them and removing their change purses and any other loose items of value they had with them. After 2 nights of doing this, he had accumulated the necessary money so Zyr could learn the skill of magecraft. The next morning, they went back to the tower and paid the complete fee. Kadron was told that Zyr would be there for 2 years. He decided to send a missive home (he found an elf who would to the task in the town's messenger service) and tell his parents he was staying in the forests outside of the city until Zyr was finished. As he was leaving the city that day, Kadron was accosted by 2 men and brought into a building. He was surrounded by 6 men with long swords drawn. Kadron didn't move. After about 5 minutes, a man entered the room. He told Kadron that he spoke on behalf of the leader of the guild in town. It seemed Kadron had broken a rule when he stole from those people and didn't give a tribute to the guild. This man told Kadron that he had to offer his services to the guild for a period of one year. He had no choice, so he joined this band of thieves. For the 2 years while waiting for his brother, Kadron learned much from this group. He obeyed all their rules and paid his proper tribute to the guild. When Zyr finished his training, Kadron was released from his services. The 2 brothers started for home, telling each other of their experiences in each other's absence.

Kadron and Zyr were about a day from their village, when they noticed the smell of smoke in the air. They made haste and followed the smell of the smoke. The stronger the smell got, they closer they were getting to their village. They made their way as quick as possible. By the time they had reached their village, it was night. They couldn't see all that much, but they were able to see that their village was completely destroyed and burned. No another elf was alive. They had all been killed. Quickly, they made their way to where their home was, nestled high above in the trees, higher than most. The huge tree had been toppled to the ground in a most unnatural way, taking any home built in it, and any others in the way, down. This is where they found the remains of their parents. Upon further investigation, it would seem that almost no elf made it out of their home. Kadron suggested to Zyr that they rest and in the morning, they go over the village and begin saying prayers and burying their kin.

While they were in reverie, Kadron was awoken by the sound of footsteps. He jumped up and drew his sword. He stood face to face with a drow, a dark elf. The dark elf stood there, about 4 inches taller then Kadron, with 2 swords drawn. He immediately put his swords away and spoke in the wood elven tongue to Kadron. He said his people were responsible for the destruction of their village. He personally used this raid to escape his people. He did not believe in their ways. He managed to kill some of his enemies, then his out in the forest until they left. He claimed to be very upset at the destruction of the village and made a vow to his god that he would search out any survivors and keep a watch over them if needed. He proceeded to take his weapons off of his person and give them to Kadron. Kadron was very wary of this because he was told many horrible stories about the evil dark elves. This one sincerely seemed to be different. Kadron decided to trust him and together the 3 of them buried everyone killed in the attack. Over the next couple of days, the brothers formed a bond with the dark elf and the 3 became friends.

The small group left the area after the task, the smell of smoke still hung deep in the air. This dark elf was an excellent hunter and he taught Kadron how to catch game. While out hunting one night, they heard a commotion. In the distance they saw a group of about 8 orcs fighting 2 dwarves. They decided they should try to even out the sides. The orcs were dispatched quickly. It turns out the dwarves were brothers and they were out in search of an elven city named Pangea. Their king is indebted to the elves for some reason and they were sent to lend a hand. Kadron and Zyr jumped on the change to go with the dwarves, they were anxious to see another elf. They dark elf had some problems with this considering elves and dark elves have a strong hatred for each other. He decided to go and let the gods work it out.

There were some minor encounters along the way. They fought some orcs, goblins, kobolds and the like. But for the most part, the 9 day journey was uneventful. That is until that 10th day. The group guessed they were about 1 day from the city when, suddenly and apparently from nowhere, a perfect line of 20 arrows was shot in front of their feet, stopping their progress. They heard a voice and immediately Kadron saw the elf in the trees above. Looking around some more, he saw about 30 elves surrounding them. All of them were hidden it the trees. 6 of the elves were immediately upon the dark elf, weapons ready and surrounding him. The apparent leader would only speak to Kadron and Zyr and in their own language. After they explained why they were here, the elves escorted them to the city. They kept their weapons out to keep the drow surrounded, but were friendly to the dwarves. When they got to the city they were shown to some quarters to clean up, except the dark elf, who was taken away. In a short time they were greeted and escorted to see the king. The king explained to them that their city was under attack from white dragons. These dragons were kidnapping elves. One of the missing people is the king's daughter, Princess Elsbeth. He wanted them to travel north into the mountains and rescue his people and his daughter. They agreed to do this. The king gave Kadron a ring, stating that it is called the Hoop of Pangea. When a command is issued, the ring enlarges to a gate. The gate leads to Pangea. Only elves born in Pangea can go through the gate. The king instructed them that when they find his people, send them through the gate. He gave them money for winter supplies, which had to be purchased elsewhere, and plenty of food to get them through their ordeal. After the dark elf was examined by the mages and priests of Pangea, he was allowed to return to the others.

The rescue took more then 3 tendays. The only loss to Kadron and his friends was that of Zyr's familiar, a chipmunk who did not survive the cold. They found the lairs of 5 white dragons in total, among various other dangerous polar creatures. The dragons were all rather young by dragon standards, except one, who was the leader. He was the one holding the princess. That battle was rough and Kadron nearly lost his life. He couldn't fully escape the blast that the dragon emitted from his mouth. Kadron was pulled out of the vicinity of the dragon and healed by Zyr. They returned to the fight and soon after the dragon was dead and the last of the prisoners were freed. This is where Kadron first laid eyes upon Princess Elsbeth, the most beautiful elven maiden he had ever seen. He escorted her to the gate with hopes he would survive the trip back to Pangea and see her again.

The group was much relieved when they passed into the warmer climate. Within a few days they were met by a group from Pangea and escorted them back to the city. The princess was among those in the group, and she and Kadron talked much on the 2 day trip back to the city. When they all arrived back at the city they were greeted with a hero's welcome. They were then escorted to a living quarters, given a bath and clean clothes, hot meals and whatever else they desired. A messenger came to Kadron and told him there was a banquet on this night and a meeting with the king on the following night. Kadron passed this along to his friends. That night they partied and danced. For the first time, Kadron and Zyr felt a bit at ease reveling with other elves. Elsbeth caught up with Kadron and they spent the whole time at the party together. They danced, ate, drank, talked and sang. When the party was over, Kadron and Elsbeth spent the rest of the evening high in a tree watching the night sky.

Before they knew it, the sun was coming up over the horizon. Neither of them were tired, so they went back to the city, got a couple of horses and decide to ride for a few hours. As they were on the outskirts of the forest, they spotted 2 wagons and a bunch of horses. There were about 12 humans who had set up a camp. They were wearing bright colorful clothes and were singing and dancing. Elsbeth explained to Kadron that they were gypsies and they passed through every once in a while. She headed over towards them and Kadron followed. Elsbeth declared to them that she is a bard and wishes to play with them. They agree. During a break a short time later, Elsbeth tells Kadron that she can charm the gypsies with her music. Kadron picks up on the hint. When they start playing again, Kadron can see some of the gypsies showing signs of being in a trance, although they are still singing, playing and dancing. Kadron goes around and relieves the gypsies of some of their baubles. After playing a bit longer the elves thank the humans for allowing them to play with them, get on their horses and leave. On their way back to Pangea, Kadron and Elsbeth joke about the gypsies and split up their newly acquired gems, coin and jewelry.

Kadron meets his friends later on that evening and they all go to see the king. The king thanks them for their help and gives them a reward. Kadron and Zyr each receive land in Pangea and enough money to built a new house upon it. The dwarves are handed a letter from their king. It states the dwarves and elves agreed on allowing a dwarven stronghold in the forest, about a days journey from Pangea. The 2 dwarven brothers are to lead it. The dark elf was granted freedom in and around Pangea. He will be welcome there, just as another elf would be, without any problem. As a last note, the king gives Kadron permission to court his daughter.

With Elsbeth

Kadron and Zyr stayed in Pangea for quite some time. The both joined the patrols that defend Pangea. Zyr kept studying is magecraft. Kadron and Elsbeth were teaching others about music, and on the side a bit about thievery and spying. Kadron had a small following. Soon his little band was doing their own patrols and they were assigned to ambush enemy camps that were being set up too close to Pangea. Zyr was the head mage on the lead patrol.

After a couple of years, Kadron asked the king for permission to ask Elsbeth to marry him. He granted that permission. The king through a dinner party, and it was at that party Kadron asked Elsbeth for her hand. She said yes. They were married in the spring. Kadron did not want to move into the palace, and Elsbeth wanted to leave it, so he and Elsbeth stayed at his home. He had it renovated and the security made better. Soon after the wedding of Elsbeth and Kadron, Zyr told them that he will be traveling to Evermeet, to study magic with the high elven mages. They bid him good luck and farewell, with hopes of seeing him again soon.
