THE PEEK STREET SITE
The First and Only Plutonium Weapons Factory Built in the Middle of an American City
last update January 20, 2001
During the period from 1946-1955 the General Electric Company
under the direction of the DOE/NR ran a Plutonium Production Facility
in the middle of downtown Schenectady, NY.
The facility was eventually transferred to the Niskayuna Site of the
Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (and thereafter referred to as SPRU).
GE/DOE/NR abandoned the Peek Street site in 1953. During
the late 1980's, while GE/DOE/NR were busy destroying the lives of four
whistleblowers who raised safety issues, it became known
through the release of certain documents that the Peek Street facility
had never been decontaminated before it was abandoned. For 20 years it was used by Buy-Rite Foods as a food distribution warehouse for the Capital Region. It is anyone's guess has to how many
people died or were otherwise incapacitated from radiation exposure.
The important issue, for the Government, is that GE/DOE/NR got rid of
four people who told the
truth and GE/DOE/NR got away with murder. This tactic is not new. It has
been going on since the days of the Manhatten Project
