John M. Murphy departed this life at his residence in Fayette county, March 21st, 1863, in the 68th year of his age. The deceased was born in Union District, S. C., March 2d, 1795; he removed to Georgia in 1826, was twice married, first to Mrs. Nancy High, then to Miss Martha A. Rogers, daughter of Robt. Rogers of Cass (Bartow) county.  Bro. Murphy joined the Baptist church at Flint River (Jonesboro) in the year 1840, and was at the time of his death an orderly member of the Baptist church at Fayetteville.  Bro. M. was a good husband, indulgent parent, humane master, kind neighbor, and useful member of the church.  He has left an amiable wife and interesting family to mourn his death; but " they mourn not as those who have no hope."  In the midst of their sad bereavement they are conforted by the hope that his departed spirit has gone to that "rest that remaineth for the people of God", where after life's toil is over, they  hope to meet again.

After John's death, Martha remarried to James Butler (1812 - 1878), 20 June 1865.

Jeremiah Byrd Murphy (5) (Mark 4 , Simon 3 , Simon 2 , Richard 1 ) b. 1805, died before July 1846. Jeremiah married Lavina Jackson.

After Jeremiah's death, Lavina decided to move with her children to California. They joined a wagon train headed up by George Donner.  Lavina and her children would become prominent members of the Donner Party, and their story would become infamous as they fought for survival in Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

William Murphy, son of Jeremiah, gave a speech in 1896 about his exploits in the Donner party. He stated that they joined the Donners "at the Big Blue, in Kansas, where they were water bound." They joined the party on Thursday, May 28, 1846.

Lavina Jackson Murphy, was 36 at the time described as "a wealthy mormon "sister" from Union Co., SC; widow to Jeremiah B. Byrd Murphy. She died in late March at or near the Eddy/Murphy or Breen/Keseberg Cabin from starvation or murder. At the time of death, Mrs. Murphy was deranged from starvation. However it is possible that she was murdered by Lewis Keseberg the last survivor of the party. He was also suspected of murdering Tamsen Donner, wife of George Donner.

The Murphy family built a cabin near the shore of the Donner Lake. Described as being "about three hundred yards from the shore of Donner Lake, and near the wide marshy outlet." Here they would try to spend the harsh winter that came upon them.

"The storm that had trapped Reed and his relief party descended on the lake. The two men left the Donner girls with Mrs. Murphy while they occupied the adjoining cabin section that had been abandoned. The three girls remained at the lake with Mrs. Murphy, who also was caring for George Foster. She was another of the heros of the Donner Party, and she gave her life caring for the children."

In the accounts of the rescue party, upon arriving at the Murphy cabin during one of the rescue attempts, the entire cabin was covered in snow. Most of the members had already died from starvation. Suddenly Lavina Murphy "popped" up out of the snow in front of the rescue party. They described her as appearing as if she were dead already being malnutritioned and emaciated. Lavina apparently thought she might be dead as well and looked at the men and asked: "Are you men from California or from God?".

Jeremiah and Lavina had the following children all members of the Donner Party. The information details their experience in 1846 when they were at the Donner Pass:

  1. Sarah Ann Charlotte Murphy (6) was age 19 and wife of William McFadden Foster . Sarah and William both survived the Forlorn Hope, also called the Snowshoe Party. After making it to civilization, William became part of the rescue party and returned with the Third and Fourth Reliefs.   Sarah and William had the following children:
    1. Jeremy George Foster (7) was abt. aged 3.  He died in Mid-March at the Eddy/Murphy Cabin. It was suspected by Lavina Murphy that Lewis Keseberg, strangled George during the night, murdering him so that he could be eaten. His father was gone with the Snowshoe Party and by the time his father returned, the body was gone apparently eaten by Keseberg.
  2. Harriet Frances Murphy (6) was aged 18. She married William Montgomery Pike . William Pike and his brother in-law William Foster were going to journey to Sutter's Fort for suplies in late October when Foster accidentally shot Pike, and he died, near Truckee Lake. Mary Murphy, Harriet's sister, wrote a letter on May 25, 1847 to her relatives:  "Mr. Foster was going to go ahead and come back with provisions, but in loading the six-shooter it went of and shot Mr. Pike in the back.  He died in about one half hour, and in that time he suffered more than the tongue can tell. We was then about 2 hundred miles from the nearest settlements.  It was the last day of October.  That night it commenced snowing."       After her husband's death, Harriet left her children with their grandmother, and journeyed with the Forlorn Hope in the Snowshoe Party.  In 1847 she married M.C. Nye and settled in Marysville. Harriett and William had the following children:
    1. Naomi Levina Pike (7) who was age 12. She was rescued by the 1st Relief. She married John L. Schenck, and lived til 1934, the second-to-last survivor of the Donner Party.

  3. John Landrum Murphy (6) died at age 16 from starvation Jan. 30, 1847.
  4. Meriam "Mary" Murphy (6) was age 14 when she was rescued by the 1st Relief at Donner Pass. She reached Maryville, California about 40 miles north of Sacramento. The city of Maryville was named after this Donner Pass survivor.
  5. Lemuel Murphy (6) was age 12 when he died on Dec. 27, 1846, with the Forlorn Hope at the Camp of Death. Lemuel was eaten by members of the party. The other Murphy members refused to eat the flesh of their brother.
  6. William Green Murphy (6) was age 10 when he was rescued by the 1st Relief. He returned to Missouri to attend law school, and then returned to Virginia City, Nevada, to practice law.  In 1880 he was the City Attorney of Marysville, California.  He and his wife had seven children.  In 1896 he presented a talk at Truckee, California, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Donner Party.
