In he 1860 census, Polly was age 90, and lived in the household of Jesse and Levinia. She was born 1770 in Georgia. Jesse died before 1870 as Levinia and Virginia show in the 1870 census alone.

Generation 3
Jefferson J. Howell (?) (John) b. 1828 in Georgia. He married Ann B. Key. They lived in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia in 1860.
Jefferson enlisted into the Confederate Army 21 Aug. 1861 into 1st Co. A, 60th Reg. Georgia Infantry, Bartow Artillery along with his brother John. Jeff shows as present from 21 Aug. 1861 through December 1861. The next record shows Jeff "Listed as killed in battle 20 Jan. 1862, Skidaway of Congestive Chills."
However Jeff's story does not end here. Another record takes over in March 1864, two months after his supposed death. It states that Jeff transferred to Co. K, 42nd Georgia Infantry on March 04, 1862. He was wounded and captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 04, 1863 and paroled there July 16, 1863. He was admitted to Way Hospital at Meridian, Miss. January 13, 1865. He shows being paroled at the end of the siege of Vicksburg.
It is difficult to tell exactly what happened here. Jeff's widow Ann Howell, filed widows papers in 1864 in Griffin, Georgia and received pay for Jeff. There is no record of Jeff ever returning from the war. Ann is listed with her parents along with her son Lucious in 1870.
Jeff and Ann had the following known child:
- Lucious E. Howell (4) b. 1860.
James W. Howell (3) (Jesse 2, Jesse 1) was born August 19, 1823 in Georgia and died March 24, 1901. He married Rebecca Floyd Huckaby, December 23, 1847 in Pike County, Georgia. She was born January 17, 1827 in Georgia and died Bet. August 12 - 17, 1895 in Conecuh County, Alabama. The Alabama, 1895, Register of Deaths, show Aug. 12, 1895, but the Bible of her daughter Lucy Howell Little shows Aug. 17, 1895.
James and Rebecca had the following children:

John S. Howell (3) (Jesse 2, Jesse 1) was born 12 Dec. 1833 in Monroe County, Georgia. He died 05 Aug. 1911 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Hapeville, Georgia, on Stewart Avenue. (now known as Metropolitan Parkway.)
John enlisted into the Confederate Army, 21 Aug. 1861 at Griffin Georgia. He served as a Private in 1st Co. A, 60th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, CSA. His papers state he was 25 years old at the time of enlistment although this age does not match his birthdate. He was present from 31 Aug. 1861 through October 1862 where he was shown to be absent. It states he was in Griffin, Georgia sick. It was not uncommon for ill soldiers to be sent home to recouperate.
John returned to duty and was transferred to Co. A, 22nd Battalion, Georgia Heavy Artillery, on 26 Nov. 1862. They were known as the "Bartow Artillery". He was shown as present from Nov. 1862 until June 1863 where he is listed as "sick in camp". He continues to be present from July 1863 until Oct. 1863 where he shows 'present, sick present in arrest". He continues to show as present January 1864 until Feb. 1864 where he shows as "present, confined to Oglethorpe Barricks, since Feb. 27, 1864.
John’s pension application in 1902 states John had suffered a chest wound during the war. Based on John being listed as “sick in camp’ and “confined to barracks in June 1863, it is logical to conclude that he was wounded in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia.
It appears that John had a lengthy recovery from his wounds and it appears that John was removed from battle for quite some time. He was transferred to Co. B, 22nd Battalion on 11 May 1864. He was then transferred "from Co. B, Battallion Artillery for C. H. Moral on guard" and then his record states he was placed in Co. C.
July through Aug. 1864, he is present on Guard Duty. He shows as being sick in Sept. 1864. He is present Nov. through Dec. then he is present in Savannah, Georgia on 17 May, 1864.
In Savannah he is transferred back to Co. B. 22 Ga. Battalion, Heavy Artillery. He was on the roll Dec. 1864, last on file shows him present. John was present at the surrender of his regiment on 26 April 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina.
After returning home from serivce John married Savannah A. Tankersley, 01 Jan. 1871 in Clayton County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Andrew J. and Mary Ann Hambrick Tankersley and was born in Lincoln County, Georgia in 1849. Both families lived in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia according to the 1880 census.
John and Savannah had the following child:
- William "Willie" S. Howell (4) b. 19 Aug. 1871 in Senoia, Coweta County, Georgia, d. 1941 in Fulton County, Georgia. He married Fannie Elizabeth Barton.
It is believed that John had another child but that child and Savannah were lost in the childs birth. Any other children John and Savannah had would have been born and died between 1872 and 1879, therefore no record of them exists. Savannah died before 1880 and it is suspected that she died in childbirth. When John applied for his pension he stated that “wife and other children dead”.
