and Jackson. Therefore it is believed that his name was Jonah
Jackson Stephens.
Jonis joined Co.E, of the
30th Georgia Regiment at the start of the Civil War. He was
discharged in 1862 for being over the age of 42.
Near the end of the Civil War this family was taken prisoner by the
Union Army and taken north. Although specifics are not known as
to why they were chosen, it is likely that a member of the family was
working for a Confederate factory or mill. This occurred in several
places in Georgia such as the New Manchester Mill in Campbell County,
Georgia (Now Douglas County), and the Roswell Mill in Roswell, Georgia.
It was the belief of the Union Army that destroying the mill
would not stop the production of uniforms or arms, so they would take
the workers of the mills and move them northward to northern prisons
for the duration of the war.
This family was moved northward and then placed on boats to Indiana.
Research is just beginning on this new knowledge (9/2008), hopefully updates will be provided soon.
