Replacing a whistle post (2 photos)

Pulling up an old whistle post and loading in on the flat car.

The law in Georgia requires whistle posts placed 1200 feet before a crossing. L&N's standard (before the law) was 1500 feet. Every post had to be replaced. Rather than replant the heavy concrete posts the railroad provided new posts as you see in the top photo above. Most of the posts were damaged and not reusable, and the old concrete cracked easily when they were moved.

Careful observers will see there's not 300 feet between the new post and the one being pulled in the top photo. That's right! The crossing was moved some years ago.
