I was stunned to learn recently that ... lambs have tails. Really. The reason sheep have such stubby little tails is that lambs get their tails trimmed. Like branding the oxen or vaccinating the pigs, lambs go through a ritual at some age where their tails are bobbed. Apparently it's for cleanliness, but I don't know the details.
It makes perfect sense, but I honestly didn't know that.

My life-- and perhaps yours, too-- feels like an accretion of knowledge and relationships, each layer settling down on the whole to change and be changed by what is already there, and to lay the foundation for what is next.
One thing we can do is observe the process of life. In doing so we seek a balance between pushing forward too fast and holding back against the inevitable next change.
My roots are in the physical sciences. And my interests extend outward to art, biology, athletics, culture, and psychology, as well as inward to consciousness.
But this blog isn't about theory. It's about the knowledge we have access to right here in the trees, the cars, the bathtub, our job, tonight's casual dinner conversation, and indeed in tonight's dinner.
