In the closet of my hotel room in Shanghai, there is the usual stuff-- some hangers, a set of slippers, the laundry bag and request form. There is also a gas mask. It claims to be effective in case of fire, but is also labeled, "anti-smog, anti-carbon monoxide, anti-hydrogen cyanide, anti-sarin."
I hope I don't need it! Can you imagine placing such an item in an American hotel room?

My life-- and perhaps yours, too-- feels like an accretion of knowledge and relationships, each layer settling down on the whole to change and be changed by what is already there, and to lay the foundation for what is next.
One thing we can do is observe the process of life. In doing so we seek a balance between pushing forward too fast and holding back against the inevitable next change.
My roots are in the physical sciences. And my interests extend outward to art, biology, athletics, culture, and psychology, as well as inward to consciousness.
But this blog isn't about theory. It's about the knowledge we have access to right here in the trees, the cars, the bathtub, our job, tonight's casual dinner conversation, and indeed in tonight's dinner.
