In October of 2000, Richard Jones, of Salt Lake City, Utah will make a second attempt at rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, in a specially designed, high-tech rowing boat. The first attempt was in 1998, starting from Lisbon, Portugal. This second attempt will be from Los Gigantes in the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa, to Miami, Florida, a distance of approximately 4,000 miles. Richard hopes to cover the distance in less than five months, but will have sufficient food on board for seven months. By starting in October, Richard hopes to avoid the hurricane season which is from June to November. He has named his boat the Brother of Jared, in recognition of some of the first, if not the first trans-oceanic travelers to the New World in approximately 2700 B.C. Richard will be able to stay in touch with his home base via an onboard satellite e-mail system and a satellite phone. A desalinater pump will provide fresh water, while a small stove will help with meal preparation. Power for the boat's electrical system is provided by six solar panels and two 80 amp gel batteries. Three GPS (Global Positioning Systems) units, two compasses, and a dozen nautical charts will help guide Richard across the vast expanse of open water and through the Bahama Islands to his final destination at the Miami Yacht Harbor in Florida.
