King Johnson will play both shores

Atlanta-based King Johnson will return to the Mobile area this weekend, appearing Friday at Soul Kitchen on Dauphin Street and Saturday at Judge Roy Bean in Daphne.

The band's specialty is "funky, horn driven roots music" mixing jazz, rock and New Orleans influences. Asked about the Atlanta band's affinity for the New Orleans sound, guitarist Oliver Wood said, "I wouldn't say we lay claim to it. It has influenced us a lot, because we're big fans of that music."

He should know a thing or two about influences, being the brother of bassist Chris Wood of the band Medeski Martin Wood, and the son of a guitarist who recorded with Joan Baez.

The upshot is essentially a blues-rock trio that entered uncharted waters when it incorporated a two-man horn section into its music.

Wood said listeners at the band's shows should expect "something funky, and they should expect to dance, if they're so inclined."

A bonus of performing in lower Alabama, he said, is the possibility of being joined by guest Chris Spies of Kung Fu Mama.

"Chris is the one who first brought us to play in that area," Wood said. "We normally don't have a keyboard player, let alone a good one like him."
