Funky Majesty

I dig King Johnson. In fact, I like the Atlanta-based band's CD "Luck So Strange" so much I can't get it out of the changer. King Johnson brews a heady mix of Crescent City funk, gritty jazz, sweat-smeared blues and percolating boogie on the disc's 13 jumpin' tracks. It's the kind of music that'll have you shaking that tailfeather, or chair-dancing as I've been doing all week at my desk. The band has toured as Merl Saunders' backing band, but strikes out on its own for Saturday night's show at Sloppy Joe's. I wonder if there'll be enough room on the dance floor once King Johnson's hot, tight horn section gets its James Brown-style groove on? Play that funky music, white boys.
