King Johnson

Sweat-inducing blues-funk throwdowns.

Whether playing a sweat-soaked set at a gritty roadhouse or opening for legends like Dr. John, this Atlanta quintet has a knack for grabbing hold of the audience and urging them to move, making newly devoted fans out of folks who'd never even heard of 'em before. Led by charismatic guitarist/vocalist Oliver Wood (brother of Medeski Martin & Wood bassist Chris Wood), the band's secret weapon is the brass duo of saxophonist Marcus James and trombone/tuba player Adam Mewherter, whose syncopated fills add flashy punctuation to the rollicking rhythms laid down by New Orleans-style drummer Greg Baba and bassist Chris Long. Mixing the blues influence of apparent namesakes Albert King and Robert Johnson with a groove-oriented funk that ensures a good time will be had by all, their blistering live sets have King Johnson about one album away from the "big time." —Bret Love
