Piermarini, is one of the world's great operatic shrines. Since it opened on 3 August 1778 with Salieri's Europa Riconosciuta, La Scala has hosted most of the great names of international opera. Bombs ruined the theater in August 1943, but it was rebuilt in almost its original style and reopened on 11 May 1946 with Toscanini, in his eightieth year, conducting a gala concert.
