More information on Berend (Opa) Baas-299 (1831-1893).

Berend (Opa) Baas-299 (1831-1893):

Birth: December 5, 1831 in Uetersen,Holstein,Germany

Baptised: January 15, 1832 in Ueterson,Holstein,Germany

Death: August 12, 1893

Burial: August 14, 1893 at Green-Wood Cem., Brooklyn, New York City, New York, U.S.A.

Known as Opa to family.
He was one of ten children. five older brothers and four younger sisters.  He was a sea captain, as were three of his brothers, and he was the only one  to come to the U.S.

There is a sheep skin document stating that he was shipwrecked off the coast of Brazil in the 1850's and that he was inducted into the free masons at that time. He had been shipwrecked many times. Gigi Baas may have the sheepskin stating this info. The last address I have for her was R.D.2, Norwich, NY 13815.

Came to the US in 1865, on July 21, 1865 he married Helena Dau. He was 33 and she was 20. Berend and Helena had been shipwrecked off the coast of Costa Rica, and Helena said he would have to give up the sea or her. The wedding certificate lists his occupation as baker. The witnesses to the marriage were Peter Dau (mentioned in Grandma Garms diary of the Wreck) and Luisa Viehl. Peter Dau was also a sea captain. John D. Fischbeck has the wedding certificate, the last address I have for him is 6 Pine lane, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

Shortly after the birth of their first child in 1866, Berend and Helena moved to Coney Island, NY. where he established the Baas Bakery. He was a pioneer in the upbuilding of Coney Island, and one of its most respected citizens. Atteded the Dutch Reformed Church in Graves End Brooklyn, his children were baptized there since there wasn't a Lutheran Church.

Berend Baas died in August, 1893. Thereafter, Helena, his widow, sold the bakery and bought three stores on Surf Avenue, as income producing property and a place to live. She ran an ice-cream store in one building, her son-in-law, Henry Grasshorn ran a large hardware store and his nephew rented a grocery store. Helena lived above the two stores and George [the nephew ?] and Minnie lived above the third. [Minnie's husband was Henry Grasshorn].  These stores were across the street from the famous Luna Park. Fire was a constant threat, due to the frame buildings and the paints, etc. in the hardware store. Mardy was born there and these stores are still standing.

Came from Germany, on the ship Borussia, which came from Hamburg, via Southampton. Arrived NY on 31 July 1861.  Entry Behrend Baas, age 29, sex - M occupation - seaman; from: Germany, village unknown.  Taken from ships records at New York Public Library.  Behrend is the spelling in the records, it looks like a signature, and I think the way that he spelled it, he probably later Americanized it.

I found his birth entry in Ueterson, the name was Berend Baass, the double ss being a German double s.
