The Himar Region, Sinai

The Himar is a mountain region, located in the northern latitudes of Sainai . Its name is derived from łThe High Marches˛ . the name given to the three kingdoms that once populated the large central valley of the river Coldwater. Its is a low-tech area with strong fissures of magic that emerge in its lowlands at certain points. The Himar is the Home for five indigenous cultures, The Jupani, The Norasha, the Solus, the Riverfolk, and the Vortan. The interaction between these different cultures, and the travelers adn races from outside the region, make the Himar an active, colorful part of Sinai.

Map of Himar Region, Sinai

Scale = one grid equals approximately one days traveling time over level ground on foot, half a days travel on level ground if mounted. Note level ground equals on a road or improved path. The mountain grids generally take 3 to 5 days to cross by folks unfamiliar with the area, 3 days by a ranger or woodsman unfamiliar with the area, 2 days by a ranger familiar with the area or a Jupani in clanlands out of his home clan's erritory, and one day by a Jupani in his home clan's territory.

Geographjic Location Information

H3 - The trade city of Elamoore
This is the capital city of the River Folk culture. Elamoore has a large ocean dock section, and even larger airship tower section and a huge market square where the collected goods of the Himar region are sold for shipping to rest of Sainai. The ity is roughly concentric from a center point on the coast, the richer quarters inland behind a stout stone wall, and the lowerclasses clustered in squatter villiages along the river or middle to low class homes against the walls edge. The valley of the cold water is a great oasis in the middle of the parches desert, the yearly flood depositing fresh alluvial soil to sustain the large crops of wheat and other vegetables grown along the river shores. The houses of the farmers in this flood plain are built like Mot and Bailey castles upon stone mounds. This mound serves as protection from brigands but more importantly it keeps the households out of reach of the yearly flood which inudates the fields each spring in 5 to 10 feet of meltwater from th mountain snows.

For more information on the Riverfolk see the Riverfolk page at this link.

H4 - The Desert Road
The Ancient road slowly disappears into the desert where the Nomads continue to run the caravan routes along its buried course. Old ruined messenger and military posts punctuate its length, now the home of bandits, nomads and the occaionsl military camp on the lookout for highwaymen.

G3 - The Old Path
The Path is not genreally known to the Sinai population. An expirienced guide must be comissioned to lead the traveler to the ancient road. 90% of these Guides are Jupani from the Eagle Clan.

G1 & G2 - The Sentinels.
These two mountains are named for the Riverfolk legend of the warrior Eralan and his squire Kredan. These Two warriors stood watch over the border between ancient Hallaliee and Gondoloth. The Jupani call the Mountains Broonath (G1) and Ferger (G2) and both Mountains ar now the home territory of the Eagle Clan

G1, G2 & G3 - The High Wall
The edge of the mountain range is bordered by an impassible escarpment nearly 1000 feet high. The scarp is criss crossed with thin forested terraces ranging from 2 to 50 feet wide. There is a single path that cutbacks from scarp to scarp at G3 but it is not well known. The path is designed so that anyone using it may not be seen from the desert below and only from a few fortified spots on Eralan or Lenjonnor. Once the path is found it is level and of a smooth grade with only the occasional rockfall.

F1 - Knorral Peak
Knorrel peak is the Homeland of the Jupani clan of the bear.

F2 - Gondoloth
Refer to the History of Himar page under the Gondoloth section.

Snippets from a conversation about the K'hu'an and Jupani views of Gondoloth

You page-pose, "Sound like something they'd protect? It'd also give them access to the ruins of Gondoloth on the other side of Lenjonnor Mountain. (Which BTW is jealously guarded by the Jupani which could cause some strife and RP opportunities.) =)" to Iaskafa

In a page-pose to you, Iaskafa nodnods. That works, though the k'hu'an likely do more than..."inspect". They may do some business with traders that come, but chances are slim to nil that they'd let anyone near the tower under any but the most extraordinary circumstances...

In a page-pose to you, Iaskafa hmmms....the Jupani currently hold the Gondoloth ruins? Are they a First One site?

You page-pose, "Tarin noddles, "That works. The coldwater river flows at the base of the scarp and is constantlly plied by merchant boats. The Manalil road also runs right by it." to Iaskafa

You page, "I'm not sure. They are from the same time as Karak but are much older. I havn't really discussed with Lynx if the ancient Himar kingdoms are descended from the first ones or not." to Iaskafa.

You page, "They are also the place where teh Jupani were born/created. Its a holy site to them."" to Iaskafa.

In a page-pose to you, Iaskafa nods. Then the K'hu'an around the Tower will more than have their eye on the ruins...they will be keeping them under constant watch, for signs of Jupani weakness, meanwhile building their own strength, with the ultimate goal, patiently pursued, of wresting control of the ruins from the Jupani. Permanently.

You page-pose, "Tarin noddles and makes sure to arm the Jupani of Lenjonnor to the teeth then! =)" to Iaskafa

Iaskafa pages, "Quite likely, there will be large K'hu'an communities gathering in secluded spots within a short distance from the Tower, where they can be assembled into a largish army in short notice, should the balance look to favor them even for a moment." to you.

In a page-pose to you, Iaskafa riddles that section of mountains with K'hu'an. :)

You page-pose, "Tarin wags, "Oh this is setting up to something neat! =)"" to Iaskafa

F3 - Lenjonnor
Lenjonnor is a high peak that is the Home territory of the Elk Clan of the Jupani. The clanland is constantly patrolled for poachers of the elk and the incursions of the K'hu'an from Karak to whom the Jupani are gathering a great dislike. The Jupani also maintain a watch on the old path to make sure its presence remains secret lest it become an avenue for undesireables to the Gondoloth plain.

F4 - Karak
The Tower Karak is a 7 story tower with six 3 story turrets linking a curtain wall close to its flanks. The tower is situated on the bluffs overlooking the Coldwater pass where the great Wizard Doramil once held sway in service to the ancient kings . The tower is a source of legend to the River Folk, as the upper two stories of the tower were sealed by Doramil when he left on the fateful final battle with Path Pelanor and never returned again. Tales of riches, artifacts, and magic abound in The Mannalil and along the Himar coast attracting theives, mages and artificers of all sorts to try to break the seal of Doramil. Consequently, the tower has also attracted the attention of the K'hu'an, who have founded a villiage outside the tower gates base and inspect or drive off all who approach.

F5 - Edonorath Peak
Edonorath Peak is largely uninhabited except for a large Zelak colony near the river. The name hallilean, the Jupani caling the peak Dreyor.

E1 Dom Peak
Dom peak is a towering, snow capped peak with a large hanging valley on its east side called Feeram. The Glacier Rowan sits at the valley head the birthwaters of Loudwater River issuing from its terminus. The Loudwater only flows overland during the spring floods, spending most of the year taking an undergroud route through the underlying limestone where it issues from a huge spring at the base of Knorral Mountain. The Valley is a traditional karstland, with thin to nonexistant soil and a joint crossed limestone pavement that offers little sustinence except for sheep hearders and the occasional farm in the till near the glaciers head. Dom peak is the Homeland of the Kordon clan of the Jupani. They are a very hardy folk and trade the wool from their Kordan flocks for food from the more prosperous tribes of the lowlands. They along with the Eker Mountain clan compose the two clans of the Highland Jupani

E1 & E2 Horoo Arete
The hanging valleys of Dom and Eker are seperated by a knife edged arete called Horoo. Several paths criss cross the steep slopes of the arete, but the more traditional way of traverse is through a large cave system that allows passage through the mountain via an improved path maintained by the highland tribes.

E2 Eker Mountain.
Eker mountain is a high peak with the large hanging valley, Trethorrna on its western flank. The head of the valley contains the Hrenn glacier, and its outflow stream, the Hrennoora. Unlike Ferram, Trethorrna receives ample sediment from the streams running off from Eker, allowing a thin but fertile covering of soil to remain on the eastern side of Hrennoora. Trethorrna shares the same limestone bedrock as Feeram, however, only allowing overland flow in the Hrenoora river during the spring flood. Nonetheless. the valley is filled with Jupani fields during the dry season although much effort must be taken to obtain water from the underground streams. Kordon herders graze along the more barren west side of the valley. Eker is the home of the Fox Clan of the Jupani, a prosperous clan charged with watching the western approaches along the Loudwater River. They along with the Dom Mountain clan compose the two clans of the Highland Jupani.

Dronnel Mountain
Dronnel Mountain looms over the western walls of Mannalil Valley, Its eastern sides cut deeply by the glacier into nearly mile high cliffs. The Loudwater river flows around Dronnels western flank. cutting deeply as it drops 3000 feet in its 10 mile long rapid run finally emerging from a deep ravine between Dronnel and Scarak to empty into The Mannalil near Hallaliee. Covered in thick forests, Dronnel is the home land of the Boax Tribe of the Jupani. The Dronnel Jupani are a sturdy lot, charged with watching the eastern border of the clan lands to protect them from River folk poachers and the K'hu'an of Karak.

E4 - Southern Manalil
For the idea of what this valley looks like take a look at a picture of Yosemitee National Park USA, Especuially around the El Capitan region (Dronnel) and Half Dome (Scarak). The valley is fertile with many fortified farmsteads and numerous bandits along the Manalill road.

E5 & D5 The 2 Sisters
Named for two Jupani Sisters of legend, Kiree and Alya are low lush peaks seeping with hundreds of springs from the meltwater of the glaciers to the East. They are the homelands of the Vartans.

DI - The Horn Of Kerros
The Horn Kerros is the mightiest peak in the land. It is named after the great stag Kerros, of Jupani legend because of the arrowhead shape of its crest. Kerros is usually shrouded in clouds and is rarely visited due to its stormy environment and thin air. Due to its height, air ships usually have to steer around Keros as opposed to going over it.

D2 - Kerros's spine
Kerros's spine is a large arete that falls off of Kerros peak like a buttress. Steep sided, foul weathered and prone to rockfalls the spine is a dangerous place to be. It's crest holds the main path of approach to Kerros and marks the edge of Jupani territory to the North. Like Haroo, The Jupani usually traverse the Spine underground, through a tunnel that terminates in Trethorrna. The Spine, like Kerros, is extremely high in elevation. Consequently, airships tend to go around it as opposed to over it making this section of Himar largely unknown, except to the Solus and Jupani.

D3 - Scarak Mountain
Bordered to the north and east by the steep walls of Mannalil, and to the south by the Loudwater gorge. Scarak is named by the Jupani Word for Graker, which its shape resembles. True to the name, scarak is the home of the Graker clan of the Jupani and is constantly infiltrated by Graker hunters, searching for the wild Jupani stock for the Torachs of the River Folk.

D4 - Hallalliee
The Town of Hallalliee is the Main River Folk city in Mannalil. The city is built upon a large mound, composed of the remenants of the ancient city of Hallalliee. Most of the stone of the old city has been scavanged in building the walls and towers of the new city. The cellars and sewers of the old city still remain, however, now sheltering a dark warren off theives and squatters that would make Darkside proud. Large Barrow mounds lie outside the city, long since plundered by tomb robbers and artificers and now guarding tunnel links to the shadowy "Underground" beneath the city.

C1 - Reke Mountain.
Reke is the Jupani name for the Solus, the winged felines to whome the mountain is their homeland. The Mountain holds 2 hanging valleys, that support fine grazing for the ke'nai. The western end of the mountain terminates in the side of the great plateu glacier. Kerros makes passage to the south almost impossible so the Solus have little dealings with the Jupani except for traders who pass through the Kerros tunnel(D2). Movement to the south is restricted by the steep cliffs of the Manallil, the winged Solus having no difficulty, but earthbound traders are confined to a treacherous path, that cutbacks up the cliff face to the Southern Hanging Valley. Dothan to the north is easily accesable, and is used as grazing land for the ke'nai herds.

Click here for information on the Solus

C2 - Northern Manalil
The valley here is largely unoccupied, except for the occasional farmer or woodsman. Occasional reminants of a great road can be seen but are now mostly gone.

C3 - The Far Wall
Here stands the ruined reminants of a fortification that once guarded the boundary of ancient Hallalliee. Perched upon the crest of a large Morraine, the wall and its former towers project a jagged skeleton on the skyline of the land as they span from one end of the valley to the other. The eastern wall of the Manallil here is not as steep due to the great outpourings of lava athat have spilled from Harrod and his kin. There is no surface water along these flows, all streams and precipitation disappearing into the cracked lava stone to emerge at the end of the flow from a series of sulphr water springs.

C4, C5, B3, B4 - Harrod, Grenta and Sjor
All part of one huge volcano, these 3 peaks rumble and fire ash every few years. The Names are Jupani for a legendary hunter and his family, all known for their foul tempers, especially the wife, Grenta, who's mountain counterpart constantly spews steam and gas from the many fumaroles at her peak. Harrod is by far the mightiest of the peaks, rivaled only by Kerros to the west. Grenta is the most active peak and Sjor, the smallest, was born if a single eruption 100 years ago. The land around the volccanoes is both scenic and apocalyptic, depeding on if you are in a forested section or in a slope most recently visited by ash and fire. No people live permenantly on the slopes of the volcanoes, although Kavi prospectors constantly search them for the mother load that is responsible for the placer deposits of gold and silver in its stream beds.

B1 - Dothan Mountain
Dothan Mountain is largely uninhabited. It's name is Jupani for "Ke'nai" and is named for the many Solus Herders that live there.

B2 - Path Pelanor
This ruined city is the former homeland of the Norasha. Ruined by the flood which ended the Gondoloth war, the city is a havoc of stone silt and vegetation. Long since picked bare by artificers, the city is an empty shell in this empty land, awaiting the time of its rebirth.

B3 - Clemeaux Valley.
Clemeau valley is a large hanging valley at the base of Sjor. Filled with fields and vinyards in the fertile volcanic soil, Clemeaux Valley is the main agrarian belt of the Norasha, more commonly known to outsiders as the Ice Clans. Clemeaux Valley terminates at the head of Sharon Glacier from which the river Vylde flows to cascade into the Manalil in a spectacular waterfall. The river flows from an ice cave from which a great causeway is delved. Around a mile back into the glacier the first of the great ice cities of the Norasha, Pelanor Dressel, is built. The city extends to the rockwall ends of the glacier through 5 great crevases. Deeper in the glacier are two smaller cities, Pelanor Nomme, and Pelanor Brijandi. The Valley can only be accessed through trails across Sjor and through a steep path alongside the Vylde falls.

B5 & A4 The Ice Sea
The ice sea is the top of a great plateu glacier that borders the northern reaches of Himar. Trecherous and filled with crevace fields, very few sentients venture out onto its cold, storm swept landscape.

A1 - Lands end
Lands end is the name given to the glacier that carved the Manalil. Here stands the great beast of ice, barren and lifeless, a small prominantory of the Ice Sea beyond.

A2 - Lake Pelanor
Cold and Pristine, Lake Pelanor sits at the face of Land End covering several square miles before spilling over a morraine to become the Coldwater River. Teaming with ancient gar and salmon from the seasonal run, the lake is an untapped resource awaiting the rebirth of Path Pelanor.

A3 - Torrel Mountain
Torrel is a mainly ininhabited peak at the ends of the wilderness. It is mostly used as a game preserve for Norasha nobles on the hunt and is patrolled by Wardens to make sure no poaching occurs.

A5 - Ferjen Peak
Fergen peak is a lonely horn jutting up from the ice of the stone sea. Devoid of cover and vegetation beyond hardy lichens, it is inhospitable a place as any in Himar except for one thing. Iron. A small iron vein was discovered by an insanely optomistic pair of Kavi prospectors who treked across the Ice Sea 10 years ago. (Now they are the wealthy proprieters of an incredible underground boom town within the mines) Now, beyond all reason except the greed for iron, the seemingly worthless piece of real-estate has become one of the most prosperous, overcrowded and vice ridden boom towns of all of Sainai.
