Spirit Houses & Shrines I've been facinated by spirit houses and shrines for many years, as they are, to me, the physical embodiment of our inner questions and dreams. Spirit houses are based on the Thai tradition of providing a shelter for spirits who watch over and protect natural surroundings as well as the home and its occupants. Spirit houses are situated in natural settings or a prominent place on the property. It is said that the sometimes mischievous spirits will grant safety, happiness, and prosperity if given frequent gifts of flowers, food, candles, or incense. Shrines are a way to recognize and promote the spiritual aspects of our lives. Some shrines explore broad themes such as personal growth, dreaming, and finding a spiritual home, while other shrines have specific religious icons. Shrines may be personalized by the owner and are meant to encourage personal expressions of faith.
