Ron Blomberg, Class of '66, was the first designated hitter in major league baseball. The event occurred on opening day, April 6, 1973 at Yankee Stadium. Ron, who played basketball at Druid Hills, played for the Yankees for a number of years. Also in the Class of '66, Brenda Boozer has been a mezzo-soprano with the New York Metropolitan Opera for the past 14 years. Ray Stevens, recording artist, graduated from DHHS in the 50's. He was Ray Ragsdale then. His hits include "Everything is Beautiful," "Ahab the Arab," "Gitarzan," etc. He won a Grammy for Everything is Beautiful" for male vocalist of the year (1970). Sam Massell, the former Atlanta mayor, is a DHHS alumnus. Former Senator Herman Talmadge is a DHHS graduate. Alfred Uhry, who wrote the play and screenplay "Driving Miss Daisy," graduated from DHHS in 1954. He is the only American writer to have won a Tony, an Oscar and the Pulitzer Prize. | ||
