Where they came from: Although Georgia distributed the lands in the Helen area to its citizens and US veterans in the 1820 land lottery, few of the lucky winners ever came live on the parcels they had won. Instead, Helen-area settlers largely came from the piedmont and mountaineer migrations which had begun hundreds of miles to the north over a century before. A number of early settlers came from the western foothills region of North Carolina, but the first settlers in the Helen valley came from neighboring areas in Georgia.
