LOCALITY Website General Purpose and Goals
This website aims to provide information value not available elsewhere on the
Web, and to promote a vision of good website style. I started the LOCALITY website
as a personal project to learn and implement HTML and to experiment with website
conception, planning, design, execution, and maintenance - while trying to avoid
the here's-a-million-pictures-of-my-pet-along-with-all-the-flashing-webwidgets-I-can-find
syndrome. Each section of the LOCALITY site aims to be engaging and informative
while maintaining a strong focus on its' chosen subject.
Who Runs the LOCALITY Site
I'm an individual hosting this site out of a personal account at MindSpring.
My professional experience has been in the planning, implementation, and support
of microcomputer info systems, including PCs, Macs, UNIX, LAN/WAN, Microsoft
Windows, and Novell NetWare in biotech research, software development, financial
services, education, and non-profit environments. In college, I majored in English
Lit, but also took courses in UNIX and programming fundamentals. My introduction
to the Internet (e-mail, telnet, nslookup, etc.) was back in 1987 with a UNIX
account on a VAX (1178?) for a programming class. I haven't yet worked as a
web designer or web programmer, although some involvement with Intranet websites
has become a standard part of the microcomputer info systems skillset.
Website Name: LOCALITY
The American Heritage Dictionary, 2nd College Edition (1982) defines "locality"
as:
(1) A particular neighborhood, place, or district.
(2) The fact or quality of having position in space.
This website is my particular neighborhood in Webspace and I wanted a generic
8-letter name for it. Therefore, "LOCALITY" is just another place
on the Web . . .
