Weaving and Spinning Lessons
with Guest Lodging or as a Day Student

My joy is teaching and sharing what I have learned and explored over so many years. I offer two different options for spinning and weaving lessons. You may choose to be a "stay on the ranch guest", or a day student.

If you choose to be a guest at my ranch while learning to weave and spin, we'll tailor your experience to your desires. Once I know what you wish to learn, and the number of days you will be staying with me, I will design a course of study to meet your needs and goals.

You'll enjoy one-on-one instruction for approximately one hour in the morning, and again in the afternoon. The rest of the time you will be working on your area of exploration, or relaxing as you wish. The advantage of being a guest is that I am always around and you can easily find me if you run into a problem. You'll also have a peaceful vacation while you enjoy learning.

The cost for each day is $150.00 which includes room and board, studio facilities, instruction and use of all equipment. A 25% deposit is required when you make your reservation. The deposit is non-refundable unless notice is given in writing 21 days prior to your reserved date. There is also a fee for the materials you use. I can accommodate up to three guests. If you come as a "group" there is a reduction on the cost per student, plus your stay is a great "learning vacation" and memories for friends to share.

The studio, where you will be working, is separate from the house and open for your use at all times. The facility is spacious, well lighted, and filled with fiber, yarn, looms, spinning wheels, drum carders - all available for your use during your stay. You can also enjoy the outdoor swimming pool if you visit during the warmer season of the year.

If you live a reasonable distance from my ranch, you also have the option of being a Day Student. Each session of my classes is scheduled for a full day each time you come. We start at 9:30 a.m. and the class goes until 3:30 p.m. The class meets once a week. The number of classes in the course depends upon the subject. We set up a day in the week that works for you. My schedule is very flexible since I run a ranch and every day is the same, week days or weekend days.

Day Student Class Prices
Beginning Weaving * 8 sessions * Cost $400
Beginning Spinning * 7 sessions * Cost $350
Tassel Workshop * 1 session * Cost $50
Inkle Weaving * 7 sessions * Cost $350
There is a reduction in the price of the classes if there are 2 or more students.

Portable looms are available for rental for the weaving class for the length of the class, the cost is $40. I also have inkle looms available for rental for the length of the class, the cost is $35.

If you are interested in any of the above offerings please email me for detailed information. If you are interested in learning something specific other than the classes listed above, please email me and inquire. If it is within my area of expertise I will let you know.

A Tour of Marian's Farm

I'm located about 20 minutes east of Sacramento, off Highway 80. As you come through the gate you drive up a tree-lined lane with llamas on both sides. In Autumn it is sprinkled with gold and red leaves, in Spring it is all green. You'll see llamas grazing on irrigated pastures (as in the photo at the top of this page) and ducks bobbing on the pond. You will be greeted by Timmy the cat, Oliver the black standard poodle, and yours truly.

Your room is clean and comfy with a vanity table, full length mirrors and a large closet. I think you'll find the rest of the house quite enjoyable too. In warm weather, you're welcome to swim in the outdoor pool anytime you wish.

You'll love the studio since you already have an interest in fiber. You'll find a variety of looms, wheels and fiber in every corner.

If you understand the limitations of the medium in which you are working, it will free you to be more creative.

Marian Thormahlen

One of the great pleasures in my life is teaching and sharing all that I have learned over so many years with new generations of weavers and spinners. Many of my former students have gone on to become well known in the fiber world. This makes me very proud.

I started weaving in 1949 while attending The California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. I graduated from San Francisco State University with a major in art. Spinning was added to my art-craft in 1962. I spent many years being a productive artisan, selling my weavings and creating commissioned items. I belonged to a juried artist co-op, The Artery, in Davis, California for 7 years. I won many awards for my work in competitions, and have had gallery showings of my weaving.

I have been teaching for 35 years. I taught spinning and weaving for 5 years at the Craft Center, University of California at Davis. I was the spinning and weaving instructor in two shops in Sacramento for over 7 years, and have given special workshops to weaving groups in California and Oregon.

I have been a judge for many shows and county fairs - jurying weaving, spinning and sheep fleeces. I am a member of the Gravander Spinners the oldest recognized spinning guild in the United States.

Teaching beginning, intermediate and advanced weaving, spinning of all fibers at all levels, and Inkle weaving (band weaving), are the areas of my expertise.

Call or email me for your fiber needs. If you are in this area and would like to come for a visit, the llamas and I always enjoy company. Just contact me for directions.
