Hendrikus and Gysbertje were married on June 2, 1881 by Rev. Egbert Winter,
pastor of the First Reformed Church in Pella. Hendrikus was a member of First Reformed Church. Gysbertje joined First Reformed Church on April 18, 1883.
They farmed in Black Oak Township, Mahaska
County near her father Pieter.
Hendrikus and Gysbertje purchased the original family farm from Pieter Sr. in Jan, 1887. After Gysbertje’s death in 1889, Hendrikus re-married and continued to live on this farm for a time. He sold the farm to Tuenis A. Tysseling and Jan Vos in 1891, but repurchased it from
them in 1902. Martena’s descendants, the Vermeers, still own the original
Pieter De Jong Sr. farm. It has been designated a Century farm because it has
been in the family for over 100 years.
