Denis Florence MacCarthy:
Author, Poet, Translator

(1817-1882)

Graphic from 'The Sorceries of Sin'

Welcome to this small tribute to the great 19th century Irish poet and translator, Denis Florence MacCarthy.  My purpose is to put the author's works on-line.  Some in-progress e-books are located here.  Once I have finished a book, it is my policy to donate the text to Project Gutenberg, link to that collection, and removed the in-progress version from this local site.

I first discovered MacCarthy while transcribing some Catholic Encyclopedia articles.  The On-Line Catholic Encyclopedia project interested me enough to spend some volunteer time.  I got to learn a little about a variety of subjects as I practiced my typing skills and helped publish a good reference work for untold future readers.  Quite naturally I looked up my own family name in the index and discovered a near-namesake.  I found that I genuinely enjoy his poetry.  MacCarthy is also mentioned by James Joyce in Finnegans Wake [no U.S. access].
