Disk 1 contains five outstanding books of early Alabama
history:
A Brief History of Montgomery by M. P. Blue was published
in 1878 and was included in the 1878 City Directory.
The History of Alabama by Albert James Pickett was
published in 1851. This, the first history of the state, is
commonly known as "Pickett's History."
Woodward's Reminiscences, published in 1859, contains many
accounts of very early Alabama which was, at that time, the
American Western Frontier.
Early Settlers of Montgomery County by W. G. Robertson,
published in 1892, is a colorful collection of biographical
sketches of early pioneers.
The First Settlers of Upper Georgia by George R. Gilmer,
published in 1855, contains personal accounts of many of the
earliest families who came to Alabama.
Disk 2 contains the first five Montgomery city directories.
These were published in 1859, 1866, 1873, 1878 and 1880-81.
Aside from the actual listing of residents, these old city
directories contain a wealth of other valuable information. All
the advertisements are included. The directories are instantly
searchable on any word.
These CDs will
run under windows (any version) or MacIntosh. They require a
browser such as Netscape or Explorer.
