Detective Berlin was assigned to the Vice Control Bureau and was working in an undercover capacity. On September 25, 1975, Detective Berlin and another detective were returning to headquarters on I-275.
While on I-275, Detective Berlin drove down the ramp at Memorial Highway, which was under construction. His vehicle struck a parked flat bed trailer loaded with steel. Detective Berlin was killed instantly. His partner was injured but recovered.
