Officer Marrero was responding to a bank robbery as a part of her normal patrol duties. She was tracking the robber, armed with an automatic weapon, through an apartment complex. Officer Marrero was gunned down by the robber, who waited to ambush her in the complex's parking lot. The robber subsequently committed suicide rather than face justice for his acts. Officer Marrero was only fifteen months away from retirement at the time of her death.
