- Course description: Catalog Description: PH 290--Modern Philosophy from the Renaissance
to the present. Emphasis on the outstanding philosophers of the period.
In Development of Modern Western Philosophy, we will trace the development of
philosophy and science as they are done today through careful readings of the
progenitors of modern thought. Beginning chronologically with Descartes, we will
see how the topics he chose for consideration determined in large part what topics
others after him found suitable for inquiry. We will move along the time line and
culminate with a reading of some of Kant's philosophical writings, which set the
stage for modern and post-modern thought. Represented philosophers include
Descartes, Leibniz, Locke, Hume and Kant
