Course Requirements for The Sustainability Banquet
Course requirements: The main objective of this course is the preparation and service of the Sustainability Banquet on November 30th. More details of the banquet can be seen here, but the main elements are the obtaining and preparation of the food for the banquet and the preparation of an information pack for all participants. The class will also be responsible for publicity and media relations surrounding the event.
The academic purposes of this course are best served by group discussion and class participation. Because of this, you should attend each class with the reading assignments completed and with issues in mind to raise in discussion.
The requirements for this course comprise , weekly blogs and comments on another student's blog (with few repeats), sale of two tickets and participation in most (more than half) of the planned field trips, planning the menu and finding the food for the dinner, preparation and set up or service and clean-up of the banquet site and the FCS kitchens and a final 750-1000 word paper about your reflections on the course, the banquet and the sustainable/slow food movement given the growing cost of food and transportation. All papers must be typed, and it is the responsibility of each student to keep a copy of each paper turned in to me. I will tell you more about these assignments as we see how the preparations proceed. (If anyone in this class has any special test-taking or paper-writing needs, please see me as soon as possible to make the appropriate arrangements.)
The grade you receive in the course will be determined as follows:
Weekly blogs and comments-25%, Ticket Sales/Field trips--25%, Banquet setup/service/clean up--30%, Final paper--20%,
I will assign letter or number grades depending on the sort of assignment. Here is how the letters and numbers correlate:
A+ 97-100 A 94-96 A- 90-93 B+ 87-89 B 84-86 B- 80-83 C+ 77-79 C 74-76 C- 70-73 D+ 67-69 D 64-66 D- 60-63 F 50 points Zero 0
There will be absolutely no make-up assignments of any kind in this class unless I determine that there is a legitimate excuse. A prerequisite for a legitimate excuse is that you either contact me or leave a message with the English Department secretary (x6420) before the assignment is due. I cannot imagine a catastrophe so extreme that you cannot get a message to me yet which leaves you still concerned with making up the missed work. I do not announce the time or dates of quizzes or homework assignments beforehand, so be careful.
