Who is Mia Kirsh?

Mia Kirsh is a longtime activist, with a special knack for propaganda. She began making leaflets with presstype and mimeo machines 20 years ago. When the Macintosh computer was born, she was working with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) and learned enough to publish a newsletter on the computer there in the 1980s.

In 1985 she helped publish a book called Central America Without Crying Uncle in Brooklyn, New York. After marrying the author of the book, David Kirsh, they moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989 and she worked at Christic Institute South, a civil rights lawfirm. Again, Mia designed and published a newsletter which was mailed out all over the South.

At the same time, Mia and her husband helped to co-found The Prism newspaper, a free alternative tabloid monthly newspaper and she became it's main designer and production coordinator. Although Mia is no longer production coordinator, she has worked on the production of every issue of the paper for the past 8 years as a volunteer (along with everyone else).

In 1992, Mia started working for Environmental Media Corporation in Chapel Hill, and produced a yearly catalog featuring videos, books and other media about the environment for children and educators. At their urging, in 1993, Mia began her own business to provide desktop publishing. Mia still does all the catalog and desktop publishing work for Environmental Media along with the many other clients she has found.

In 1996, Mia added on an office space over her garage affording a lovely view of natural surroundings, and space for equipment and a large table for projects. This home office also allows her to take care of her child after school, and sometimes allows flexibility to work weekends or evenings for rush job deadlines. (Although, she hopes not to do that too often!)
