Impulsively, I once had decided it was time to try my hand at sculpture. Finding it difficult to choose my theme; I thought of a making a relief wall-plaque. Using old Xmas cards for inspiration, I selected to sculpt a scene depicting a mother patiently nursing her first born. I used an air drying clay, and named our first completed piece, CARING. Elated with the outcome, I had cast many copies and gave them to friends. Shortly after completing a number of pieces, I approached Joel Meisner, a gallery and bronze foundry proprietor for his evaluation and criticism of my work. He suggested it was time for me to consider attending evening sculpture classes, under the tutelage and guidance of Richard McDermott Miller. In the classes of this gifted working sculptor, I gained valuable insight in the handling of wet clay and eventually also to work with micro-crystaline wax. During this period I religiously attended sculpture and casting demonstrations, mostly held at a Sculpture Associate's supply house, in N.Y.C. I continued training myself, sculpting from posing models at C.W. Post's weekly sessions, and at Frick Museum's sponsored evening art sessions in Roslyn, NY. I attempt, in this internet exhibit, to share a lesson I learned. It definitly does pay to try! I never suspected, nor could I have foreseen, that I had a latent ability for sculpting.
