  portraits of miles

Miles is a favorite photographic subject around here.  He's our little kid, after all, but he's also an interesting, good-looking young person whose photos offer a glimpse into his soul.  Here are a few of my very favorite photos of Miles.

miles as a baby This was his first formal portrait sitting.  When we got the proofs back, we thought this was one of the more soulful baby pictures we'd seen.  And he really did look like this.  We kept expecting a half dozen monks in ochre robes to show up at the front door at dinnertime asking the infant Miles to identify relics.

Even now, at the height of ten-year-old activity and silliness, Miles can visit some deep thoughtful places.  He's very kind to his animals and considerate of other peoples' feelings.  His recited prayers are innocent and moving.

miles at the kitchen table Here's a photo I took that turned out pretty well - got lucky I guess.  Miles is sporting a blonde-tipped haircut from a summer ago, sitting at our kitchen table, looking thoughtful.  Probably thinking about Star Wars.

I think the Gundam Wing Anime series may have been some influence on the hair tinting.

miles held the berries When we were in Holland, Cheri and Miles walked up the street on a shopping trip one nice afternoon, and Cheri let him hold the berries as she walked back home.  The little awning was up on his stroller so he wouldn't cook in the sun, and Cheri walked along happily behind, pushing the stroller, enjoying the fine day in Den Haag.  Miles was very quiet and peaceful during the walk back.  It wasn't until they returned to our flat that it was discovered that the berries hadn't survived the trip.

Miles was a serial berry-snatcher in Holland.  One of my co-workers hosted a July 4th party in honor of the expats, and Miles absolutely cleaned out his black currant patch.

miles in a box Miles loves to build forts out of chairs, blankets, pillows, you name it.  But best of all is when there's a large box big enough to fit in.  Here some friendly big person has cut a window, and Miles obliged us by letting us take his picture.

miles Here is Miles' most recent portrait sitting, this time wearing his favorite aloha shirt and a nice smile.

I've noticed several other photos of Miles on this site where he's wearing this same shirt.  Wonder if I need to take him shopping...

miles at the fire festival Every year, the Pioneer Square district has a Fire Festival, where they remember the Great Seattle Fire that pretty much leveled the place.  Fire crews from nearby cities polish their rigs and parade them, have competitions, and are really nice to little kids.  Miles loved firemen and fire trucks when he was little, so this was a sort of a pilgrimage for him; you can see it in his expression of awe.

miles in the pool Nothing fancy here, just Miles bursting out of the pool, happy as happy, doing one of his favorite things in the world.

tiny bird asks... So what are some of Miles' favorite websites?

Toys 'R' Us
Miles visits the Toys 'R' Us website at amazon.com to look at things like Star Wars action figures and other toys and see what's new.  Once he sees something he likes, he'll save up for it.  Some toys are more expensive on the web site than in the stores though, so we usually buy in person.

Star Wars
Which brings us right to the Star Wars website.  If you don't live with a ten-year-old boy, you may have no idea just how big Star Wars is in some circles.  Miles and his friends are absolutely nuts for all things Star Wars.

Lego One of the great sources of really fun Star Wars toys is Legos.  These guys are some of the most amazing engineers on the planet.  A couple of Miles friends are top-flight Lego builders, and Miles loves to have company over to build with.  We could pave our basement with these things, we have so many.

Gundam Official
Another favorite outer space universe is the Gundam Wing animated series.  I share Miles' enthusiasm for these cartoons, especially the movie Endless Waltz.  Great source of anti-gravity hairstyles.  The Gundam Official website gets frequent visits from both of us, and at work I have a test account populated by Gundam Wing characters.

CheatCodes.com
The CheatCodes.com site is a favorite stop for Miles and his friends.  They can learn new game techniques and secret codes to unlock player capabilities here.  Just about all the young people who visit our house love to play computer or video games.  When remote-controlled combat planes become a reality, America's youth will be ready to fly them - the Air Force could setup a recruiting station in our basement right by the Playstation 2.

Cartoon Network
The Cartoon Network is probably Miles' favorite channel.  Bugs Bunny and Gundam Wing are his favorites.  We visit their website together sometimes to see what's new.

Emeril.com
Another TV favorite is Emeril the chef.  Miles adores this guy, and will rush downstairs to the kitchen after watching a show to put together a salad dressing or whatever.  Miles loves to cook and is very focused in the kitchen.

Neopets
Neopets is a virtual world, where you care for and feed virtual pets.  Miles and many of his friends at school went through a huge Neopets phase earlier this year - you couldn't get the kids off this website.  If they forgot their pets for a couple of days and they got all hungry-looking, the kids would feel terribly guilty about it.  They really cared about the welfare of their Neopets.
