SOUTHERNS IN SURRY AND STOKES COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
TAX LISTS, 1775-1801
Tax lists are a fruitful source that provide annual "snapshots" of
heads of households which supplement census records and in some cases
capture families that enter and leave an area between census years.
Stokes County tax lists are particularly rich in this regard. The
following show the first appearance of the Southern family in North
Carolina with William Southern in Surry County in 1775, and the
apparent emergence of younger men out of his household in years
thereafter. Stokes County was formed from Surry in 1789.
1775
Camplins District
William Suthern. 350 acres; 150 pounds
0 slaves
10 cattle, 3 horses; 220 pounds
Taken from the transcription by William Perry Johnson. This is the
first record of William Southern's presence in North Carolina. Since he
and Reuben appear in the 1774 titheables list of Buckingham Co.,
Virginia, the family apparently moved to N.C. between the time the two
lists were taken.

William "Jr." appears, perhaps
William's son, but their relationship is not documented. The younger
William was a veteran of the Revolution (link to Revolutionary
War Service of William Southern II).
He is shown owning a slave at this early date -- he was the only N.C.
Southern ever to own a slave -- and consistently appears with a slave
in subsequent records until his death in the mid-1830s. If the slave
seen here was seven or younger in this
record, it may be the same person who is the slave woman in her 50s in
William's 1830 census.
