She was very frail, and a housekeeper, Polly Snow, was called in to care for her and the children of the first marriage. After Sarah's death, Joseph married Polly. [From notes by Jo White Linn, Davie Co. Library, Hanes file] Hanes material from Davie Co. library has a list translated by Adelaide Fries that does not include George as a child of the first marriage, but then has another page in the same document that names him, said he never married. In 1850 Mary A. Hanes age 50 is living with George, Lewis, Emma, John and Villiam Hanes and a number of other people, next to Alexander Martin Hanes. George also received four slaves in the division of Joseph's estate. Davie Co. library, photocopy: Joseph Hanes, born 1784 at Hope NC in present Forsyth County, located on west side of Yadkin, the location later known as Fulton. His first wife was Catherine Sehner who died in 1819. Previously I had her death as 1823. I haven't resolved this discrepancy. Davie deeds 3:400, 28 Dec 1849, division of Negroes: Alexander M. Thompson (identified from cemetery records, Fulton Methodist). Lewis is not buried at Fulton Methodist. However, there's a child buried there, Joseph H. b. & d. Dec 1854, son of L.C. and B.L. Hanes, and another David T., b. & d. 1859, son of L.C. and L.V. Hanes. Louisa Virginia Thompson died a few weeks after this baby was born. I can't identify B.L., if she was a first wife. Neither marriage appears in the Davie County records. 1860 Davie County census, transcript page 111, household 877; Shady Grove district Mary Hains 59 John H. 23 Wm.
