Family Group Report - 27 Jan 2001 -------------------------------------------------- Husband: Forest L. (S.?) POWELL -------------------------------------------------- Birth: About 1816 Place: Rowan/Davie Co. NC Occupation: school teacher Father: Ransom POWELL Mother: Martha (Patsey) ANDERSON (1784-1848) -------------------------------------------------- Marriage: About 1834 -------------------------------------------------- Wife: Rebecca ANDERSON -------------------------------------------------- Birth: 4 Sep 1816 Death: 31 Dec 1847 Father: Garland ANDERSON (1788-1852) Mother: Sarah FROST (1796-1856) Davie County Heritage article 494, by Garland P. Anderson Jr., says that she married Forest Powell when she was 17. I don't find a marriage record in Rowan County. -------------------------------------------------- Children... -------------------------------------------------- 1. M Child: Granville G.R. POWELL Birth: About 1835 Place: Rowan/Davie Co. NC -------------------------------------------------- 2. M Child: William Haywood POWELL Birth: About 1838 Place: Davie Co. NC Spouse: Emaline ROBISON Marriage: 5 May 1859 Place: Davie Co. NC -------------------------------------------------- 3. F Child: Henrietta POWELL Birth: 10 Jul 1846 Place: Davie Co. NC Death: 7 May 1898 Burial: Place: Anderson family cem., Calahaln, Davie Co. NC Spouse: Jacob HOLMAN Marriage: 1 Sep 1863 Place: Davie Co. NC -------------------------------------------------- Notes: Living alone in 1850, listed as Forest L. Powell, school-teacher; household 570. There is a Davie County marriage bond for Forest L. Powell and Margaret Beck, March 3, 1848, but a Margaret Beck is also in the 1850 census, age 23, living with her parents. Did this marriage not take place? He was previously married to Rebecca Anderson, and was the father of three children mentioned in a document by his mother, Martha McKnight, 27 Dec 1847, transferring a "negro woman Mary & Alexandra and 5 other negroes" (Davie Co. deed book 2:606). In 1850 three of these children, Granville, William H., and Henrietta, were living with Garland and Sarah Anderson, Rebecca's parents. This deed gives his middle initial as S. rather than L., as do several other documents. The transcription of the deed (Jo White Linn) reads "grandchildren Granville, G.R. Powell, William H. Powell, Henrietta S. Powell". A second deed dated 17 Feb 1848, transferring four negroes, unnamed, reads "grandchildren Granville, G.P. Powell, William H. Powell, Henrietta S. Powell". Because Granville, (William) Haywood, and Henrietta Powell are all living together in 1850, with the Andersons, whereas no other G. Powell appears in this census, and from the way this is worded, I suspect that Granville and G.P. or G.R. are one person, i.e. Granville G.R. Powell. This is supported by yet another deed, dated 8 Apr 1848, Forest S. Powell to Garland Anderson for $2000, "negroes Mary & child Amanda, Wilie, Columbus, Tempe, Caswell, Lydia" in trust for use and benefit of his three children. This one specficially says Granville G.R. Powell. I can't find him or Granville in the 1860 -1880 Davie County census. His son William H. Powell does appear, however. His daughter Henrietta also continues to show up in Davie County. -------------------------------------------------- Husband: William Haywood POWELL -------------------------------------------------- Birth: About 1838 Place: Davie Co. POWELL Birth: About 1877 -------------------------------------------------- Notes: Listed in his grandmother's deed as William H., in the 1850 census as Haywood, living with Garland and Sarah Anderson, household 864. I think the association with Granville and Henrietta, both distinctive names, indicates that this must be one person. Marriage bond 5 May 1859, W.H. Powell and Emaline Robison I don't see an Emaline or Mary Emaline Robison in 1850. 1860 Davie County census, transcript page 2, household 10; Hunting Creek (Calahaln) district transcribed as W.N.
