"We should hold on a bit
longer - and pray these
storm clouds pass before
darkness truly overtakes
this land." These were the
last words prophetic words
heard in a political discussion overheard between a
Vance man and a Holden man
on the Hillsborough Road this
weekend.
On October 6, 2001 this political
scene, jabbing at North Carolina politics
of 1864, was one of nine different
scenarios presented to the public
at the Bennett Place State Historic
Site. Living historians
representing several different
organizations participated in the
event with the goal of educating
the public about conditions faced by
civilians on the home front
during the Civil War.
Several of the topics covered in the
program were: slave impressment,
conscripts, army deserters, refugees, and
activities of the home guard. Other
demonstrations seen around
the restored 19th century cabin and
kitchen included apple pressing, cloth
dyeing, and candle making.
The program is presented annually in
October. Several members from this
event will be attending the December
2 Candlelight Tour in nearby
Hillsborough from 1-5 pm. For more details click HERE.
