Here's my opinions on the beers by rank, with my four listed first. I don't think, though, that I'd give Asahi a four. I have not tried it again since I first had it, and I want to retry some of the 3.5s I gave, to see if they will warrent a bump up to 4.
4 beers, 3.5 beers, 3 beers, 2.5 beers, 2 beers, 1.5 beers, 1 beer
121. Samuel Adams Triple Bock [N/A?] (17%)
I'm not going to rate this one for two reasons. One, I never
finished the 8.45 oz. bottle it came in, and two, I don't know
if you can really classify it as a beer. It has almost three
times the normal largest amount of alcohol in beers. It has a
cork, and the little attachment to the bottle talked about keeping
it like you keep wine, on it's side so the cork won't dry out.
It was one of the weirdest tasting "beers" I've ever
had.
4 Beers
15. Asahi
(5.2%)
Asahi is labeled as "Super 'Dry'," and it is. After
taking a swallow, I tasted the beer the next thing I tasted is
water in my mouth. There is almost no aftertaste to it, and for
this reason it gets the 4 beer mark. It is also a good beer.
3.5 Beers
31. Dos Equis Special Lager
(5.0%)
I guess some of the beers people say are good, are. I like this
Dos Equis more than the Amber Lager, and after two not so good
beers, it again was a good break.
20. Elk Mountain Red
I thought this was another good "red" beer. There is
a non beer aftertaste that I could not place, but want to find.
If you know, let me know.
39. George Killian's Irish Red
(5.8%)
After drinking this one and reading the label, I know now what
the particular flavor of Elk Mountain Red is - caramel. This was
a real good beer, with a caramel aftertaste. I got this one on
a friend's recommendation, and it's one of the few recommendations
I truly liked.
58. Marthasville Southern Ale
I finally got around to trying another Marthasville brew. This
one tasted fruity to me, more than any other beer I have tried.
I have to wait until beer 108 to try this one again, and I very
much want to. It was real enjoyable.
21. Marthasville Sweet Georgia Brown Ale
I picked this one up, because I wanted to try something from a
local brewery to Atlanta. This one was real good. There is a chocolate
taste after going down, and I liked it much better than the Samuel
Adams Cream Stout and Guinness.
104. Oregon Raspberry Wheat
According to many Oregonians, this ain't a real Oregon beer, and
is fact made by the Samuel Adams company. I also read an article
in the Wall Street Journal, and they confirmed this. Anyway, I
really liked this beer. Some people may argue that it is not a
real beer because of the raspberry, but so what? I really enjoyed
the raspberry flavor, and the light beer flavor that follows the
initial raspberry taste.
3. Red Wolf
(5.5%)
I purchased this one and the Red Dog together. I wanted to compare
the two most advertised Red beers. Of the two, I like the Red
Wolf the best. It was smoother than the Foster's.
9/29/95 - I had another one of these, and decided to upgrade it's
rating. I'll probably buy Red Wolf often because I like it so
much.
111. Shiner Bock
I finally got around to trying this beer. It's been recommended
by several Texans who say it's the "real" national beer
of Texas. Well, it's A LOT better than Lone Star. It's got a distinctive
taste, and I can't wait to try it again!
3 Beers
102. Bad Frog Beer
This one I bought because of the name. I didn't notice the bottle
until later, but the frog on the front is giving the finger. Granted,
he only has a total of 4, so it could be argued it's not his middle,
but I think that's what the brewers wanted. Oh, and the beer was
good, too! I was not expecting it to be as good as it was.
110. Blue Moon Honey Blonde
This was perhaps the first honey brew that I have had that I could
taste the honey. It was pretty good, with that hint of honey to
flavor the beer. I may try Sam Adam's Honey Wheat again, to see
if it really is good.
7. Budweiser
(4.8%)
I had not yet tried a blue collar beer until Bud, and so I decided
to give Bud the first shot. After hearing so many bad things about
Bud, I was surprised that I could drink it. It had an aftertaste,
but not one I could not live with. But, since Budweiser is brewed
in so many places, I may have just gotten a beer from a good batch.
35. Bud Ice
(5.5%)
Ah, a good ice beer. I did not think I would ever find one, but
since I liked the Bud Ice, I thought I would like the Bud Ice.
It was smooth and easy to drink. I know that sounds like a cliche,
but it's true.
112. Devil Mountain Black Honey Ale
I almost didn't get this one. A friend noticed the name, and so
I grabbed it. The bottle is kind of plain, but the beer sure is
not. It says on the bottle the the beer is "brewed with chocolate
and black malts. Its robust taste is mellowed with a touch of
exotic African black honey." I could taste all of these,
and really enjoyed the beer. It was not too strong for a black/brown
ale, but enough to give it that chocolate flavor.
27. Dos Equis Amber Lager
(4.9%)
The Dos Equis Amber was another step up from the other beers I
had. I really enjoyed it, especially after the previous beers
I did not like. I am waiting to try the Special Lager.
53. Elephant Red
(5.6%)
This is an import by Anheuser-Busch, produced by Labatt's Brewery.
AB must be trying to get more of the people who don't drink the
"big" beers to still drink their products. I liked this
one. I reminded me of the Elk Mountain Red and the Killian's Irish
Red, with the taste of caramel to it.
40. Grolsch Premium
(5.1%)
After drinking this one, I think I realized that I like pilsner
beers best. This was a good smooth beer that I was surprised I
liked. I did not like the Pilsner Urquell, but it was a strong
pilsner.
32. Heineken Lager
(5.4%)
This beer renewed my faith in import beers. I thought Heineken
was a good tasting, smooth beer. I hope to try some other Dutch
beers to see if they are good as well.
118. Jack Daniel's American Ale
I had two beers left when I chose this one. I was not really in
an ale mood, and I was afraid I would not like it. However, I
really enjoyed it. It was not nearly as strong as an India Pale
Ale, and perhaps this is why it's simply an American ale. But
it was still good.
95. Leibotschaner Cream Ale
This must be a string of good beers, because I have not found
one I didn't like since #89. The Lion Brewery also makes some
good brews. This one won the 1994-95 Gold Medal in the American
Lager/Cream Ale category at the Great American Beer Festival.
I have been wanting to try a cream ale, and this is the first
one I have found. It was great. Not as strong as the 1857 Lager,
but still good.
94. Lion Brewery 1857 Premium Lager Beer
I can see why this one won got the 1994-95 Gold Medal in the American
Premium Lager category at the Great American Beer Festival. I
don't know how many others feel about this festival, but I think
they made a good choice. It was real smooth tasting, with a pleasant
aftertaste.
42. Michelob
(5.0%)
Another domestic I was surprised I liked. I have liked most of
the other beers from Anheuser Busch, so it was not really a surprise
I did like this one. It is a fairly plain blue collar beer, but
I liked the taste of it.
57. Michelob Amber Bock
My taste in beers is changing, in that I like more and more of
the ones I try. This looks like Michelob is trying to get on the
microbrew train and come out with a special beer. I really enjoyed
it. Kind of a strong taste, but nothing too strong for my developing
tastes.
109. Michelob Centennial Special Brew
People may hate me for liking this beer, but I think it's good.
I also liked regular Michelob, but not the Christmas brew. Since
I can't drink another of this until 159, I don't think I'll get
a chance to try this one again.
14. Moosehead Canadian Lager
(5.1%)
One thing my plan of drinking different beers is to try to find
a good dry beer. Moosehead was a good dry beer. It has a pleasant
beer taste, then goes down smooth and dry.
67. Oregon India Pale Ale
This beer is one of the stronger beers that I actually liked.
I let a friend of mine try it, and he hated it. I guess if I ever
need to buy a beer that I don't want others to drink, this will
probably be the brand I choose. I hope the other Oregon beers
are as good as this one was.
56. Pete's Wicked Winter Brew
I felt like trying another Pete's brew. They are probably my favorite
bigger name microbrewer. This was a seasonal brew, nothing too
strong or too weak, and nothing real memorable.
70. Red Ridge Ale
The beer bottle this beer came in was red, and I hoped that more
than the bottle would be good. I tried it and enjoyed it. I was
not too surprised that I did like it, as I am a fan of red beers.
It had a kind of tangy taste to it, hard to place. After beer
#120, I want to try this one again.
97. St. Pauli Girl Beer
Four beers in a row that I really liked. Hopefully the streak
will continue! I can't wait to hear the responses from my German
readers, where or not this is a real German beer or not! Hopefully
they will like this one as well, since it follows the German Purity
Law. Another good pilsner.
Update 4/8/96 - After hearing from several Germans, I was
informed this ain't German, for what it's worth. See also #107,
Beck's.
75. Samuel Adams Cranberry Lambic
Finally, a Samuel Adams beer I like! I was a little leery when
I saw it was flavored by cranberries, but I figured I'd give it
a try. I am not a big fan of cranberry sauce, but since this looked
like a special that I would not have much chance getting, I tried
it. It does taste like cranberries, and it's not as strong as
other Sam Adams beers, I think because it's a wheat beer. I think
it's worth trying just because of the novelty of it.
36. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
(4.8%)
I think I have begun to get used to the taste of true beers. This
one was good, and some of my harshest critics rejoiced that I
had learned to drink a real beer. I hope to eventually try a few
of the other Sierra Nevada beers.
63. Spanish Peaks Black Dog Sweetwater Wheat Ale
After the Market Street Wheat beer, I was a little leery of trying
this one. I was happy with it though, and have put hope in other
wheat beers. Otherwise, it tasted like many other beers.
96. Stegmaier Porter Dark Beer
Another good dark beer. I was leery once again with this beer,
as I am with all the dark beers I try. However, I really enjoyed
this one. It's from the brewery located in the same town as the
Lion Brewery, so it may be another from them. I guess because
the Germans settled in Pennsylvania, they brought their beer brewing
knowledge with them. Hope to try this one when I go visit my sister
in PA.
91. Tecate Cerveza
Before having this one, I had not had a beer in almost 3 weeks.
I popped this one open, and to a big swig of it. I was surprised
I did it, let alone enjoyed it. It was very refreshing to have
a good beer after the previous ones were not working for me. I
want to try another one of these, but I'll have to wait until
after #141. It's an easy drinking beer, and goes down real smooth.
116. Thomas Kemper Lagers White
I only picked this one because I had not tried it. I didn't read
the bottle until after buying it, and it sounded interesting.
It says "a wheat beer brewed with spices." It tasted
good, and I could only determine a few of the spices. There is
a picture of what looks like an orange on the label, so that's
one of them, I think.
48. Weinhard Ice Ale
I went with a friend to the package store, and he was going to
buy a six pack of Bud Ice Light. One of the workers there suggested
this one, because it was supposed to be better than the Bud Ice.
It was pretty good, but only as good as the Bud Ice to me.
2.5 Beers
38. Amstel Light
(3.7%)
This was purchased at the recommendation of someone on the Internet.
I was surprised I liked this import Light, but it's from Heineken,
and I liked the regular Heineken. It's a good light beer, not
to expensive, either.
87. Anheuser Busch Christmas Brew 1995
This is called a limited edition brew, but I don't know how limited
it is, or if the same recipe would be used again in 1996. This
one tasted like Anheuser Busch was trying to make a pale ale,
but it was a light pale. I didn't like it because it tasted so
strange.
117. Apollo Lager
I picked this one up when I got the Apollo Ale. Some friends of
mine had tried it, and told me that it was terrible. I told them
I was a big fan of lager, and I figured I would like it. I did.
It complements the Apollo Ale well.
98. Brewery Hill Black & Tan
Well, as I said before, I really like Black & Tans. This was
no different from before. It had spent a few months in my fridge
before I got a chance to drink it, so I don't know how much that
affected the taste.
93. Brewery Hill Raspberry Red
When I first tried this, I didn't like it. But, as I drank more
and more of it, I began to enjoy the raspberry taste. I thought
it would make the beer taste terrible, but since it worked with
the Sam Adam's Cranberry Lambic, I guess it worked here. I may
look into other beers brewed with fruits.
59. Brewski Bar Room
I thought with a name like "Brewski" this would be a
crappy beer. However, it is described as a Brown Ale, and the
taste reminded me of Marthasville Sweet Georgia Brown, but the
caramel taste was not present in this one. I still enjoyed it,
and I was surprised it tasted as good as it did.
92. Carib Lager
|
This beer is from a brewery in Trinidad, in the West Indies. The
other beer from the Caribbean that I have had was not impressive
- Red Stripe. Neither was this one. Nothing really spectacular
about it, however I did like it. Reminded me of many of the megabreweries
here in the United States.
65. Celis Golden Hill Country Beer
Like I said above, some beers are like most others. Celis Golden
was so average, that when I added a few beers to this list, I
forgot to add it! This is a Texas beer, and compared to Lone Star,
it's leagues above it. It did, however, not really impress me.
44. Coors Light
(4.4%)
Coors Light I am told is the best beer Coors makes. It was pretty
good, with a mild beer taste because it is a light beer. I did
enjoy it.
22. Corona Extra
(4.8%)
One of several Mexican beers fairly easily available in the US,
I was not very impressed, even though friends said it was good.
I did not try it with a lime, as I was told I should.
119.Devil Mountain Five Malt Ale
This is the second Devil Mountain brew I have tried. I was really
impressed with it, and thought I wasn't in an "Ale"
mood when I had it, but I was. I was not too strong an ale, like
an IPA, but still a good beer.
100. Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager
Number 100 was much better to drink than #50. I had hoped that
the beer I drank for number 100 was good, and I was not disappointed.
I liked the Dixie lager I tried for beer #64, so I figured I would
like this one. I don't really know what they meant by "Blackened",
but it did not taste much like a dark beer. Either that, or not
very dark.
64. Dixie New Orleans Slow Brewed Beer
As I write this review the day after consuming it, I can't begin
to describe it. Not because it was so great, but it was kind of
plain. It seems to me that many of the microbrew beers who claim
to be different and better than the megabrewers taste more and
more like each other, with a few exceptions. This one was like
many other beers, and I can't really give it a special description
even only a day after having it.
26. Harp Lager Beer
(4.6%)
After drinking several not so good beers, I found one that was
more tolerable. The Harp tasted like the Guinness without the
chocolate malted flavor. They are both Irish beers, so this may
explain it.
71. Helenboch Oktoberfest
I am not a big fan of Oktoberfest beers, because I am not a big
stout drinker. This one, however, was either not too stout or
I am becoming used to drinking stouts. It was not anything too
special in terms of taste, but I was able to drink it fairly quickly.
Most stouts I have to milk.
11. Icehouse
(5.5%)
With a lot of advertising, I figured it was time to give Icehouse
a shot. It was an OK beer, better than the other Ice beer I have
tried, the Artic Ice.
55. Jack Daniel's Amber Lager
I thought that a beer by JD would be better than this one. It
tasted like many of the other ice beers I have had, with very
little distinctive taste. It may be worth trying, just because
it's from Jack Daniels, but otherwise it's not that great.
60. Leinenkugel's Red Lager
I grabbed this one, not knowing anything about the beer, but wanted
to try a new type. This one was pretty good. I am a fan of red
beers, and it was no surprise that I liked this one. I will try
some other brews from this company, if I can find them.
72. Marthasville Classic Ale
(6.0%)
This is the first Marthasville brew that I did not particularly
like. It's a dark beer, so I was not surprised. I had hoped however,
that as a fan of Marthasville's other brews, that I would like
it. However, this was not the case.
78. McAuslan St. Ambroise Pale Ale
I can drink pale ales, and I really enjoyed this one because it
was not as hoppy as many other pale ales I have had. This is a
Canadian brew, so it may be hard to find in your neck of the woods.
34. Miller Lite
(4.6%)
I found Lite to be pretty easy to drink. It was a lot better than
Anheuser Light. Pleasant tasting, not too strong, nothing exciting.
Just a little better than average.
46. Molson Golden
(5.2%)
I had this one after having the Molson Ice, and thought the Molson
Golden was not too much different from the Ice brew. I do like
"golden" brews best, and this was an OK one.
45. Molson Ice
(5.6%)
Another Ice beer, but I don't know if it's a true ice. The label
says it's "super chilled until ice crystals form; then filtered
and blended with pure Canadian water." Doesn't that defeat
the purpose of making an ice beer? Oh well, I still thought it
was good.
66. New Amsterdam Black & Tan
I was nervous about trying this one, since it is a combination
Stout (Black) and Amber (Tan). I am not a big fan of stout beers,
having hated Cream Stout and Guinness. However, after taking a
few sips, I actually enjoyed it. I think that the amber part of
the beer was good enough to tame down the taste of the stout.
If I find other Black & Tans, I will probably give them a
shot as well.
82. Penn Brewery Helles Gold
This one from the Penn Brewery I found much more enjoyable than
the St. Nikolaus Bier. I am a fan of golden and amber lagers,
so it was not surprising that I liked this one. It was not too
strong, and had a pleasant but light aftertaste.
83. Penn Brewery Penn Dark
My tastes may be changing, for I am able to drink more and more
of the dark beers I have picked. Or, the dark beers I have chosen
are not nearly as strong as the previous ones. I am more apt to
go with my first thoughts. After having four beers from the Penn
Brewery, I found their beers refreshing, but not outstanding.
54. Pete's Wicked Honey Wheat
This is the third Pete's Wicked beer I have had, and I liked this
one the best. I was surprised I did like it, since the other wheat
beer I tried I hated. I tasted a little bit of honey, more than
the Samuel Adams Honey Porter.
49. Rappahannock Red Ale
I went home for my quarter break from school to Virginia, and
decided to look for some local brews. I found one company from
Chantilly, VA, called Potomac River Brewing Company, so I picked
up two of theirs. The Red Ale was pretty good, but at first, I
did not think I would be able to finish it. I spread the drinking
of it out over an hour, and it got better the more I drank of
it.
43. Red Brick Golden Lager
Another local brewery for me, Red Brick is from the Atlanta Brewing
Company. This one reminds me of the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but
it is not as strong as it was, so I did not like it as much as
the Pale Ale.
4. Red Dog
(5.0%)
Red Dog to me tasted like Budweiser, which is surprising, as the
Red Wolf is the one brewed by Anheuser-Busch. It was not as smooth
as Red Wolf.
17. Rolling Rock
(4.5%)
A friend bought a six pack and gave me one. It is a good tasting
beer, with a dry taste, so it got another .5 beers on my scale
because of that. Not anything spectacular, though.
61. St. Stan's Red Ale
Another average beer. It did not taste like many of the other
red's I have had. It's a little stronger than others, but I still
enjoyed. I'll be looking out for other St. Stan brews.
74. Spring Street Wit Beer
This one says on the bottle that it is a wit beer with "special
grains and rare spices." It did have a strange taste to it
that I was unable to place, as was a friend of mine who tried
it. I want to taste other wit beers to see if they are real different.
120. Tsingtao
I had received one of these several months ago, but I gave
it to a friend. Well, I got another one, and held onto and tried
it. I was not as impressed with it as maybe I thought I would
be. It did not really that distinct, tasting like many other pilsners
of the world. I thing the only thing really going for it is that
it is a Chinese beer. Other than that, it's not spectacular.
101. Tye Dye Premium Lager
I'll admit, I bought this one because of the name and the cool
looking label. I would have thought they would have done something
special with the bottle, but it's a standard brown bottle. I don't
know what a lot of beer manufacturers go around throwing out the
"Premium" name. I can't really tell the difference between
regular lagers and the so called premium ones. This one was good,
so you may want to try it.
90. Weeping Radish Brewery Fest Beer
I had a 20 ounce version of this beer about 4 months ago. It's
an amber lager, and at first taste, I did not like it. As I drank
more of it however, I began to enjoy it. I look forward to trying
it again.
68. Weihenstephan Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel
I finally found a dark beer I could drink! Partially due to the
fact that this beer was so expensive, I knew I was going to finish
it. However, it has a different aftertaste from the Beck's Dark
and the Hannen Alt. I could not place it, but I continued to drink
the beer, trying to figure out what the taste was. I don't know
if I will ever try this beer again, because of price, but I will
probably try more dark beers again.
105. Whitbread Traditional Pale Ale
This one was pretty "traditional," in the sense that
it tasted like most of the other pale ales that I have had. I
think I am beginning to notice how a lot of different bears are
now more and more alike. I am also finding it harder and harder
to find different brews, and I hope that this sameness wears off.
2 Beers
113. Aegean Lager Beer
As the name says, this beer is imported from Greece. I don't know
if this is true or not, but if it is, I had no idea that the Greeks
exported Budwesier! That's what it tasted like to me. Maybe that's
what most lagers taste like, but I am getting upset that most
of the lagers I have had DO taste like Budweiser. Oh well, at
least it didn't have a born on date
77. Anchor Brewing Company Liberty
This one was a real strong ale, and I almost had trouble finishing
it. It got better towards the end of it, however. I'll look for
more brews from this San Francisco microbrewery.
29. . Bass Pale Ale
(5.0%)
I tried this, and I don't really know what is great about it,
because I did not find it that good. I'm going to avoid this one.
107. Beck's Beer
I hope people don't find this to be one of the great import beers.
It tastes like Budweiser and a lot of other mega breweries. Damn,
two bad ones in a row. Hopefully, the next one will be a hell
of a lot better.
Update 6/5/96 - I was told by a German that Beck's and
St. Pauli girl are the SAME beer, and I have given a different
ranking for St. Pauli Girl and Beck's. I think it's because I
didn't really like Beck's Dark, and perhaps the beers I had may
have sat around too long, making the Beck's worse.
9. Bud Light
(3.6%)
Another average beer. I had one at a baseball game, and it tasted
like a typical blue collar beer. Nothing in it was light to me,
except maybe taste.
19. Busch
(5.0%)
Another blue collar beer. Not impressed.
103. Dunks Beer
This one has to win for best bottle - it's blue when empty, but
green when the beer is in it! However the taste was nothing that
spectacular. It supposed to be "Florida's finest local beer."
If anyone from Florida can comment on this, please do. It tasted
like every other mega-brewery beer I have tasted.
2. Foster's Lager
(5.3%)
A strong beer, "developed for the harsh, warm climate of
Australia," it had an aftertaste I was not too particularly
thrilled with. I probably won't have another.
Update 11/3/96 - Someone had sent me e-mail informing me
Foster's is really from Canada. I check one of the oil cans of
Foster's, and sure enough, it says "Made in Canada Union
Made." In the US, since the beer is from Canada, it's still
defined as an "import" and they advertising can continue
calling it an import. My brother had gone to Australia, and ordered
a Foster's. The bartender KNEW he was from Australia, because
Australians don't drink Foster's.
13. Guinness Extra Stout
(4.3%)
For the same reasons I did not like Samuel Adams Cream Stout,
I don't like Guinness. I would not have tried both of them on
the same night if I had known they tasted so similar. Both tasted
"different," and I will probably stay away from them.
3/13/96 - I tried another Guinness, at the request of many who
wrote to me, as well as friends. I upgraded it's score to 2 beers,
from 1.5, because I still think it's kind of strong.
5/17/96 - I have been thinking about this. Everyone says that
if I would only try Guinness a lot more, I'd learn to like it.
However, you can drink piss enough and eventually learn to drink
it. That doesn't mean it's good...
5. Lite Ice
(5.5%)
Strong aftertaste, nothing distinct about it. Tasted like beer.
114. Marthasville Atlanta Gold
This is the most recent beer from Marthasville. I had heard the
one of the company founders talk about this beer, and said it
was made to compete with those beer drinkers who like the megabrews,
i.e. Budweiser, Miller, Coors, etc. And not surprisingly, it tasted
like them. I was kind of disappointed that Marthasville would
sell something like this, but the founder's rational was that
if they could get people to try it, they might then try other
Marthasville brews and switch to real beer. Sounds good to me,
and I hope it works.
80. McAuslan Griffon Brown Ale
I don't really like brown ales, although I did like the Sweet
Georgia Brown from Marthasville. I was going to originally try
this one after #78, but I knew I would not like the brown ale
as much as I did after waiting.
89. McEwans' Export India Pale Ale
I have slowly begun to enjoy India pale ales as I drink more and
more of them. This one, however, may be a set back. My previous
India pale ales were not nearly as strong as this one, so I think
that's one of the main reasons I did not like this. I may try
it again, however, after trying other India pale ales.
10. Miller Genuine Draft
(5.0%)
Another blue collar beer. Nothing to write home about, just a
fairly average, fairly pleasant beer.
84. Old Dominion Brewing Dominion Lager
Back in Virginia for the holidays, I wanted to find some local
brews again. This lager was not very impressive, with only a light
aftertaste giving me any feeling. Hopefully, other Old Dominion
beers will have more feeling.
51. Patowmack Ale
I did not like this beer at all, and I would have given it only
1.5 beers, but I liked the flavor of it when I belched it out,
so I gave it an extra .5 beers.
79. Penn Brewery Oktoberfest Lager
As I said before, I am not a big fan of the Oktoberfest beers.
This one did not change my attitude toward these seasonal brews.
I will still try a few of them every fall, but I won't lose any
sleep waiting until next years crop of Oktoberfests.
81. Penn Brewery St. Nikolaus Bock Bier
This one was not nearly as good as the Michelob Amber Bock I had
previously. My guess is this is a seasonal brew, for Christmas.
I was not very impressed by this one from the Penn Brewery.
47. Pete's Wicked Red
This one reminded me of the Marthasville Sweet Georgia Brown,
without the chocolate malt taste. It was OK, but I like the Sweet
Georgia Brown because of the chocolate taste, and it was not here.
18. Pete's Wicked Summer Brew
It says the beer contains "a hint of natural lemon flavor."
Maybe my taste buds were kind of out of whack the day I tried
it, but I missed the lemon flavor. I was some what disappointed
that I could not find it.
30. Pilsner Urquell
(4.3%)
Maybe something is wrong with my taste buds, because I have tried
many of the good beers, and very few of them have been that good
to me. Pilsner Urquell was not very good, in my opinion. It was
too strong.
16. Red Stripe Lager
(5.0%)
This is a Jamaican beer, and I thought it would taste different.
It tasted like almost any other blue collar beers.
33. Samuel Adams Boston Ale
(4.8%)
I still can't find the attraction to Samuel Adams beers. It's
a real strong beer with a powerful taste. A friend says I can
not have another Samuel Adams because I can not appreciate them.
Oh well.
85. Steamship Brewing Captain's Lager
This brewery in Norfolk, VA is closest to my home town of Virginia
Beach. I hoped that it would be as good as some of the local brews
here in Atlanta, but I guess I have to keep on hoping. It was
not a good amber lager like many of the others I have had.
108. Sterling Beer
This beer has a bottle similar to Red Stripe - it looks like a
small barrel. The bottle was cute, but the bear was not very good.
I was not impressed.
88. Three Horses Holland Lager Beer
This has been the first Holland lager I did not like. I really
like Heineken and Grolsch, so I figured this would be another
I would like. It had a much different taste from Heineken and
Grolsch, so it was not really what I expected.
62. Weihenstephan Original
I spent $3 on this beer, so I was pretty sure I was going to finish
it, no matter what the taste. Weihenstephan say they are the oldest
brewery in the world, since 1040. I guess if you have been brewing
that long, you probably will be pretty good. It was OK, nothing
too spectacular.
73. Weihenstephan Weizenbier Kristall
I'm not to sure what this beer was supposed to be. I was not a
big fan of it, either. I still have one Weihenstephan brew to
go to finish the original four I had bought. Not one of them has
been particularly refreshing to me.
69. Wild Boar Wild Wheat
Another experience with a wheat beer. I was not to impressed with
this wheat beer, but this one was consumable. If I can find other
Wild Boar beers, I will try them as well. This wheat was not as
good as the Spanish Peaks wheat, but a lot better than the Market
Street wheat.
1.5 Beers
25. Anheuser Light
It's light on calories, with only 75, but it's not light on bad
taste. It was no where near as good as Budweiser, and a friend
said it tastes like Coors beers. Stay away from this one.
115. Apollo Space-crafted Ale
I bought this one, and the Apollo Lager because of the cool blue
bottles. This beer, however, did not tickle my fancy. It tasted
like a real strong India Pale Ale. I said before I liked IPAs,
but not this one.
8. Coor's Artic Ice
( 5.5 %)
Artic Ice had a big aftertaste, something I don't particularly
like in beers. I didn't find it very good, and will try to avoid
it.
37. Hannen Alt
I tried this one and almost poured it out. It's a German import,
and tasted like a dark beer. I don't like dark beers, and almost
gave this beer a one. I did finish it though, so I could give
it a 1.5. If you like dark beer, you will probably like this one.
52. Lone Star
The label says this is "The National Beer of Texas."
I sure hope most Texans don't drink this. This was a pretty crappy
beer. Real cheap stuff. After adding this one, I got mail from
a resident of Texas, and he advised me that this ain't the national
beer of Texas. Thank God.
Update 4/8/96 - I have heard from a few native Texans about
this beer. They all agree that it's more like "The National
Joke of Texas" and hate it. Most have suggested Shiner Bock
as the true beer of Texas, so I have to give it a try.
24. Lowenbrau Special
(5.1%)
I hope all German imports do not taste like this one. I want to
know what was "special" about it, because it sure was
not the taste. It's a Miller import, so I think that explains
it.
106. Miller Beer
Mega-brewer beer, mega-brewer taste. I want to know what was so
different about this one. Tasted like all the other Miller beers
I have had. Oh well.
28. Moosehead Canadian Ice
(5.8%)
I really liked the regular Moosehead. This is my fourth ice beer,
and this one was just as bad as two others. There are a few other
ice beers to try; maybe they will be better.
86. Redneck Premium Beer
If you have never had this beer, you have to, to taste how bad
it is. The subtitle of the beer is "The Taste of America."
Any American who has this will laugh hysterically. My dad said
it "tastes like cold water," and I agree. It tasted
like a light beer to me.
12. Samuel Adams Cream Stout
This and the Guinness were purchased at the same time at the recommendation
of a friend. After first drinking the Sam Adams, then the Guinness,
I will no longer turn to him for advise. I know now that chocolate
was only made for candies and for cold winter nights, not for
beers.
23. Samuel Adams Honey Porter
My second Sam Adams beer, and I still don't see what is great
about Samuel Adams. I was waiting for a honey taste, but could
not find it in the beer. What taste there was, was not refreshing.
99. Southpaw Light
(5.0%)
This one garnered the small ranking not because I didn't like
it. Well, I didn't, but what I really did not like is the fact
that Plank Road choose the name Southpaw as being different. It
was not different at all. It tasted like all the other big name
swill bears did - the same! I think this beer is a slap at all
left-handers out there because it's not really different at all.

6. Beck's Dark
I now know I am not a dark beer drinker. To me, the Beck's Dark
was disgusting. I won't try another dark beer for awhile.
1. Ed's Original Cave Creek Chili Beer
I thought this beer was disgusting. I love hot sauce and jalapeno
peppers, but drinking this was like drinking Tabasco sauce and
bad beer. Two swallows, then I poured it out. I had this beer
on the day I turned 21. Not a good one to start with!
50. Elk Mountain Amber Ale
Beer #50 I thought would be a better than this one. I really enjoyed
the Elk Mountain Red, and thought I would also enjoy this Elk
Mountain brew as well. I did not. It was real bitter, and I could
barely keep down the tastes I had made.
41. Market Street Wheat Beer
This one was terrible. Someone suggested I try wheat beers, because
I might like them. Not this one. It had a lot of head, and when
it finally died down, and I drank it, I almost puked it back up.
76. Weihenstephan Hefe-Weissbier
Well, I got to the last of the four beers from this company. I
opened it, tasted it, and poured it out. I just could not drink
it.
All beer names are copyright of their respective companies.
