Forensic Mapping is a term used to describe the collection of evidence at accident and crime scenes where the primary purpose is to establish spatial relationship between all items and victims. In the case of a fatality vehicular accident Officers must locate the vehicles, skid marks, body locations, debri...etc and alignment of roadways. An outdoor homicide might require victim and evidence location in respect to roads, buildings and any other site features related to the crime.
Previous to total stations
and data collectors evidence location was accomplished with tape
measures, measuring wheels and whatever could be used as a
baseline to tape from. This can be very tedious work and accuracy
suffers over long distances. Angular and linear relationships
were not very precise and elevations, if needed, were very
difficult to determine. Reconstruction experts have their work
cut out for them. But this is just the tip of the iceberg.
A major wreck on a crowded highway means that evidence has to be collected fast.Vehicles sitting idlly waiting for a wreck to clear creates irate citizens and the loss of time and money for each person stuck behind the accident scene. The longer the investigators take, the more time and dollars are lost. Talk about pressure.
Another dellema is Officer safety. Baseline tapeing can involve several Officers. If any traffic is being directed around them there is always the danger of being struck by a vehicle. The potential for injury is obvious.
On top of all this add the modern day courtroom. Evidence in criminal cases is picked over with a fine tooth comb. Hurriedly drawn sketches and hard to read field notes may become a target even with a clear and correct final map.

To aide reconstructionists Optical Engineering has put together an equipment package that will cut time, improve productivity and safety and last but not least adds survey grade accuracy to every scene they work.
Optical has been working with law enforcement agencies and private reconstructionists since 1991. We know what you need to do the job, how to do it easily and our knowledge of the equipment is unsurpassed.
